Chapter 24: The Great Sage
The two of them walked all the way to the twentieth floor, where only an old mage with a beard to his chest was standing in front of a huge stone door, and the old man bowed slightly when he saw the two coming. "Welcome, Prince of Dayton, Herrick, the Grand Sage of the Mage's Tower, has been waiting inside for a long time, and now, please follow me. β
The old man turned around and placed his right hand on the huge stone door, which was slowly opened. Barred whispered in Lucius' ear, "What did he mean when he waited a long time, it didn't take much time for us to walk up from below, did he already know we were coming?"
Lucius turned his head sideways, his eyes still looking at the old mage. "Don't speculate on mages with common sense, that's what my father told me. β
Barred shrugged, the giant door opened, a dazzling light shining through the door, and the two squinted their eyes and entered the room. In the center of the large room were only four chairs, two of which sat two mages, one of whom had gray hair and a beard that hung down to his belly, and the other who was much younger and whose hair was not yet completely white. Barred looked at the two mages and guessed that the bearded one must be the Great Sage. β
Barreid's beard judgment proved correct, and the bearded old mage raised his chin against the empty chair. "Welcome friends from afar, Your Royal Highness, please sit down quickly. β
Lucius was not polite, and walked straight to the chair and sat down. "It's tiring to walk up from below, and it would be nice if you could send us up with magic. β
The old mage smiled and got to the point. "Your Royal Highness is the first time that you have come alone without King Leopold, so let me introduce myself, I am the head of the Mage Tower, the Great Sage Herrick, I am in charge of everything here, so to speak, all the mages of Wallis are in charge of me. β
Barred felt very uncomfortable with the introduction of the Great Sage, feeling that he was too arrogant to boast, and he glanced at Lucius, and His Royal Highness the Prince looked at the mage expressionlessly.
Herrick turned his head to the other mage. "This is my apprentice, EtiyΓ¨s, who is now my assistant. β
AetiΓ¨s, who was more humble, bowed to Lucius, and stood up and handed the prince a booklet in his hand. "This is a record of the use of the Mage Tower for Dayton's donations over the last three years. β
Lucius took the booklet and flipped through it casually, it was densely packed with countless entries, and he felt a little headache after looking at it a few times, so he simply closed it. "I believe that the Great Sage must have handled these donations properly and will not use them indiscriminately. β
Herrick smiled and nodded. "It is a great honor for His Royal Highness the Prince to trust me so much, Dayton has donated the most of any kingdom in Wallis every time, and it is with these donations that the Mage Tower can function normally and do its best to protect Wallis. β
"Don't say that, this is what Dayton should do, the Mage Tower is the spiritual pillar of Wallis, and we will definitely support it fully. Lucius laughed too, it really looked like that. In contrast, Barred on the other side could only sit on the side, looking at the furnishings in the room crampedly.
Herrick struck while the iron was hot and cast a color at EtiyΓ¨s, who presented another booklet. "This is the amount of gold coins and supplies needed this time, and I would like to ask His Royal Highness the Prince to take a look. β
Lucius opened the booklet, skimmed through all the details, and went straight to the last page, and when he saw the total, he actually frowned, but only for a moment, he returned to his expressionlessness. "It seems like a lot more than the last time. β
"Yes, Your Highness, I don't know if you have heard. Herrick paused in a vague manner, making sure Lucius's attention was drawn. "Recently, traces of the Dark Tide have been found in several places, and they are not ordinary ghouls, but demons, so I decided that in order to protect Wallis's safety, I need to send a large number of mages to inspect all the villages where demons have been found, which is a lot of money. β
"Yes, we really ran into demons on the way here. Lucius nodded solemnly. "It's in Paradais. β
Barred didn't expect Lucius to say this, so Adeline would definitely be suspected of not solving the demon alone, but it was too late to stop Lucius.
"Really?" Herrick asked, but his tone was as if he already knew. "Not only that, but there are also people who have discovered the Wolf Worship Cult between the Black Swamp and the Westwood Forest, which are extremely dangerous for Wallis, and the Mage Tower must eradicate them all. β
Lucius sensed this, too, but pretended not to care, and Barred took over the conversation. "May I ask the Great Sage, why did these strange events suddenly appear recently, and did it portend something?"
Herrick flattered Barred with a nod to him. "We don't have a definite answer yet, so we need more resources to investigate, but from the available information, it seems that the purpose of these demons is to test the combat ability of humans, because the demons are all warriors without exception. β
"I see, test the combat ability, does that mean that the dark tide is about to launch an attack on the northern border?" Barred guessed.
Herrick stroked his long beard. "As the Knight Deputy Head of Dayton, your guess is the same as we have reached. β
"So what should we do?" Darktide's attack on Wallis would be an absolute disaster for the entire continent, and even Bared, as a mercenary, knew this.
"Don't worry, Knight. Herrick waved his hand. "The three border states of Doyle, Sara and Altuna are stationed in the north, and they have been defending Wallis against the threat of the Dark Tide for hundreds of years, and they will not be defeated so easily. β
"But we should still do something. Barred calmed down a bit.
"Yes, you're right, we have to do something, so our next step is to check all the villages where the demons have appeared, trying to find some clues to give the border country some early warning. Herrick said slowly.
Lucius exhaled, pretending to have finally thought it through. "I see, then please ask the Great Sage to find out the reason behind it and keep Wallis safe. As he spoke, he tucked the booklet into the inner pocket of his robe.
Herrick also looked relieved when he saw Lucius agree to the budget. "Dayton's favor to the Tower of Mages will be taken to heart, and we will continue to send the Tower's best Archmage to assist King Leopold. β
Lucius nodded in satisfaction. "On behalf of my father, I would like to thank the Great Sage and the Mage Tower for their assistance, so we will take our leave for the time being. β
Herrick and Etiyesh got up from their chairs and carried Lucius and Bared to the door. "Tonight, a dinner will be held in the banquet hall to welcome His Highness, and His Highness is invited to attend the light. β
Both Lucius and Barred bowed goodbye. "We will definitely come, thank you for the arrangement. β
Barred still couldn't resist asking more. "Will the other mages participate? I mean, will both male and female mages participate?"
Lucius was still squinting at Bared's stupid question, but Etiyesh answered him with a smile. "Of course, those mages won't miss this opportunity to eat, drink, and dance. β
"yes, that's great. Barred suddenly noticed that the horse's feet were exposed. "I mean, when there are more people, there are more people to dance with. β
"Yes, yes. Herrick looked at Bared, as if to read what was on his mind. "I promise you both will have a night to remember. β
