Chapter 50: The Rose and the Maggot
Not far away, a large area of fiery red roses came into the eyes of Barrett and the others, and the rose bushes were so dense and numerous, spreading far away into the depths of the fog on both sides, cutting off everyone's way.
Barrett led the group a little closer so that they could take a closer look.
The roses had a strange appearance—bright blood-red petals dotted with gold and black spots, and under the petals were dark thorny branches, but there was not a single green leaf on the branches, and it was clear that the plant did not depend on sunlight to survive.
There was a slightly sweet, greasy aroma in the air, and a hint of putrefaction mixed in with that aroma. It smells like broth made from spoiled pork, and even with a lot of onions, turnips, and spices, it doesn't hide its rancid nature.
"Boss, your tobacco stinks. The ogre Moglock suddenly spoke, "It's moldy!"
"Hey, that's not what I smell like with shredded tobacco. The mage's expression suddenly became a little serious, "The white card tobacco leaves from the town of Katie in the eastern part of the Holy Araso Kingdom will never be moldy or smelly!" he said in a loud voice, "The white card tobacco leaves are as holy as Mithril, as awe-inspiring as the truth, and smell like virgin fragrance...... Forget it, I told you you don't understand either. The mage pursed his lips like an angry child.
The gnome tapped the ogre's brain shell and smiled silently. Moglock also scratched the back of his head, which was wrapped in a helmet, and smirked, his expression dumbfounded.
"Is that, Devil's Rose?" asked Old Will again, turning to Barrett.
"Magic Palace Rose?" Barrett repeated confusedly, "I'm sorry, Your Excellency, I don't know what its scientific name is, but the adventurers of Bay of Pigs call this thing 'vampire bees'. ”
"'Vampire Bees'?" asked the half-elf this time. "Isn't that a flower?"
"Yes, they are flowers, but they are blood-sucking plants. Barrett said.
"Like a vampire vine?" the half-elf asked again. Along the way, they encountered many of these dangerous vines, and found many shriveled animal carcasses near these plants. But as long as you spot it in advance and don't get too close, these vines won't be able to do anything to you.
"'Vampire Wasp', or Magic Palace Rose, whatever it's called, it's not rooted and immovable. "When a prey passes by, they flapp their petals and soar into the air, fluttering and tumbling in the air like a swarm of bees, then aiming their hollow sharp spines at the prey and falling like a rain of arrows......
"Can fly? Will it act like a swarm? There's a spike on its 'butt'? It sounds like the name 'vampire bee' is more appropriate for it. Old Will smiled and said, "It's just that it causes some ambiguity." ”
"Not only that, but their pollen is highly toxic with paralyzing properties. Barrett continued, "The 'swarm' will surround the prey layer by layer, spraying a large amount of pollen on the prey. If you inhale too much, even frost bugs are not immune. ”
"I'm not surprised at all. The half-elf raised an eyebrow, "Butterflies have poisonous scales, plant sap is poisonous, pollen is poisonous, fruits are poisonous, and I wouldn't be surprised if you told me that even the gaze of a certain creature is poisonous." ”
"Petrified lizards. Barrett smiled and said something closer to the answer.
"Aiya!" the half-elf patted his head, his voice filled with helpless excitement, "In this forest, the able-bodied are no more advantageous than the blind and the lame! ”
"If you count it carefully, the dead have an advantage!" Barrett humored at the right time, "because it is not afraid of anything, and it does not need to worry that it will get worse!"
"Do you think the undead are the worst outcome?" I must tell you, the truth is far more terrible than that, I've seen ...... before," Old Will said as he stopped abruptly and coughed unnaturally, "ahem, now is not the time to say that. Do you think we should bypass them instead of burning them out?"
"Flames are really a great way to solve most problems. But there are so many of them that they can even compete with fir trees. Barrett hesitated, "We're likely to get caught up in the flowers, their thorns may not be able to penetrate Moglock's heavy armor, but for others, it's hard to guard against. What's more, we don't need to breathe like the undead, and once we are surrounded during a battle, there are likely to be some unwanted accidents. ”
Old Will nodded, as if intending to agree with Barrett's suggestion.
Barrett wanted to say something more, but suddenly, his attention shifted from the spreading carpet to something else.
Following Barrit's gaze, several chubby, nearly two-meter-long, maggot-like creatures emerged from nowhere in the forest. The creature squirmed rhythmically with gray streaks on its pale yellow body.
I saw these maggots squirm towards the roses of the Demon Palace, as if they were rushing to a unique feast.
It should be the smell of corruption from the Devil's Palace Rose that attracts them, Barrett guessed.
"What's that?" the half-elves looked at Barrett, waiting for the latter's answer, as if their guide knew everything.
Barrett looked back at the half-elf, "Maggot, what else could it be." ”
"Such a big maggot?" the half-elf didn't seem satisfied with the answer. "Isn't there any other name?"
"Why don't you call it a 'maggot'. The brute touched his stubble, which was getting longer and longer, "Some people say that they are a kind of normal, maggot-like bugs, and others say that they are the pupae of some kind of creature. Whatever they were, no one had ever seen them turn into butterflies, flies, or whatever. But either way, this kind of thing is not dangerous. ”
"Are they tasty?" the ogre looked at the maggots, and before Barrett could reply, he gave up, "Moglock is willing to eat fat, but they're too fat. Master Barron said that it is not good to eat too much fat, and Moglock will not do bad things!"
"Sorry, I haven't eaten these bugs, so I don't know what they taste, but I don't think they're that tasty. Barrett shook his head speechlessly, "Just by looking at their unappetizing appearance, you should know that no one wants to try." Food isn't a problem for either the forest itself or the visitors, so stop thinking about tasting those maggots. ”
Whether to taste a dinner party or to be a dinner party requires you to "negotiate" with the forest.
"Nobody knows where they come from, and sometimes you can meet a few as you walk through the forest. Barrett continued, "The maggots never attack people, but no adventurer wants to attack them. Because they are worthless, at least they never appear in collection or bounty tasks, and no one has found any part of the maggots' bodies to sell for money. Barrett gestured to the nearest fir tree, "There are many strange things in the forest, but not all of them are wanted. "It's like these fir trees that can be found everywhere.
With Barrett's words, those big maggots "cheerfully" rushed towards the Demon Palace Roses. When they were still 5 or 6 meters away from the outermost layer of the Demon Palace Rose, a large field of bright flowers flew into the air like a swarm of alarmed bees. The pale yellow shiny pollen fell down like gold dust, surrounding the maggots.
"To be honest, it's a pretty beautiful view. With the fluttering flowers and the glittering golden powder, it would be nice to replace the maggots with innocent maidens in full costume, and a choir with a lulled playing lyre and a row of mezzo-sopranos!"
"All that leaves us is a sword sheathed and heartfelt applause. Barrett chimed in.
"At least they don't need us to throw flowers at the 'stage'. "Because they have enough." ”
"That's a lot of 'damning'!" Barry nodded.
"If we can transplant these flowers, I think there will be a lot of mages who might be willing to plant them near the mage tower. Old Will thought of an unreliable way to make money.
It's fitting indeed, Barrett thought to herself. Because the Mage Tower, like the Demon Palace Rose, has a quality of "no one should approach" - if you approach without permission, you will risk your life.
It's just that how to transplant it is a big problem.
