Volume II: The Judgment of the Ace Empire 020 Council Chamber
"Ugly and stupid old women! If war comes, they will be the first to raise the white flag!"
The three of them returned to the blacksmith's shop, and Carey seemed to be angry, and he sat down on a stool, still muttering.
"Locke, come with me to pack your bags. Kyle said calmly.
"Kyle, where are you going?" Locke didn't understand what Kyle meant.
Kyle doesn't answer, and all three remain silent.
"It's impossible for Valango anyway. Carey sighed, "Look at what those idiots just said, they won't let Kyle stay." β
"But you didn't do anything wrong?" Locke couldn't understand why everyone was repulsing Kyle.
"No, what he did wrong was to come back alive by himself, understand?" said Carey angrily, "They think their children are dead, so other people's children can't come back alive!"
"Why? There's hope when you're alive, isn't it?"
"You don't understand, Locke. Kyle placed his right hand on Locke's shoulder, "They must be sad that they have just lost the most precious loved one in their lives. β
"But..."
"Alright, let's go. Kyle stopped Locke from asking, "Come with me to the second floor." β
Carey was still sitting on his stool, panting, and it seemed that the anger in his heart had not subsided at all.
Locke followed Kyle upstairs, took the clothes out of the shabby closet, folded them, and wrapped them up.
"Kyle, I'm sorry," Locke said, looking at Kyle, "if I hadn't gone looking for you, none of this would have happened." β
"No, Locke. Kyle folded his clothes and thought to himself, "It's predestined, you know? β
"I don't think it's a coincidence," the twelve-year-old boy began to analyze, "why would a strange-looking magician give me this gold medal?
"Locke, where did you meet that magician?"
"In the dense forest at the foot of the Love Volcano," Locke recalled, "I was woken up from the darkness by him, and he said that there would be a disaster in Kailin, and that I should come to you with the Gold Medal." β
"In the dark?"
"Actually... I fell into the territory of a youkai..."Locke hesitated, but still told the truth, "When I returned to reality, it was as if I was haunted by a terrible dream, and he woke me up. β
Listening to Locke's words, Kyle fell into deep thought,
"Who the hell is he..."
"I don't know, but he shouldn't be the owner of this gold medal..."
"Did he tell you anything?" Kyle continued.
"And he said," Locke scratched his head, trying to remember, "and said that my right hand touched something filthy!"
Kyle grabbed Locke's right hand, a small immature hand, no different from Locke's left.
"Kyle, could he be a liar?" Locke couldn't see any difference in his hands, he felt like he had been deceived.
"No, Locke. Kyle replied in the affirmative, "He's not a liar, he just has a lot of things that he didn't tell you." β
"What's the matter?"
"I don't know, perhaps, only by finding him again can we solve these mysteries. β
"Kyle, are we going to Kailin tomorrow?" Locke's eyes widened, and he seemed eager to return to Kailin.
"No, not tomorrow. β
"Why?"
"I'm still a probationary knight, and I'm going to be judged by the council chamber. Kyle seems to have come to terms with the result, "I might be sent to the Ace Frontier as a sentinel. β
"Sentinel?" Locke's eyes widened, "Aggie told me that the Sentinel never has a chance to be promoted to knight in his life!"
"This may be the best outcome," Kyle smirked, "it's better than exile." β
Locke stopped talking, knowing that the exiled people had no choice but to go to the Borderlands and live in precariousness.
"Rest early, everything will be decided tomorrow when the verdict comes out. β
Carey closes the door of the blacksmith's shop, signaling that the bustling evening is about to be quiet.
Today is a hard day, they have experienced so much in one day, and tomorrow will be a new beginning.
Even the sun, who seemed to be impatient to know the outcome of tomorrow's decision, climbed the hill early.
With the sound of drums at the gates south of the Valanger, all the people gathered around.
Commander Ryan and Councillor Whiss stood at the gates, watching the city's inhabitants await their verdict.
Directly below the gate, Kyle stood alone. He faced the countless Ace people around him, although they were all nationals, their eyes at this time seemed to be looking at savages.
Carey led Locke and stood at the front of the crowd, not looking at the people around them, just looking at Kyle.
"Yesterday, we received the sad news that the Probationary Knights of the northern camp of Mount Lef have been surrounded and suppressed by the army of the Alpine Tribes," Councillor Whisch shouted to the citizens of the city, "However, the conflict was initiated by the Alpine people, and Kyle has brought back this precious news, so that we will not be passive in this conflict..."
"Will they really admit to the words of a little ghost!" a citizen of the city interrupted Councillor Whiss, "will the mountaineers reason with us?"
"Why is he in conflict with the mountain people in the Borderlands?"
"He's the one who killed the entire Cadet Knights!
"You brainless fellows!" Carey couldn't bear it anymore and yelled at the crowd, "Why should someone who is not even qualified to hold a sword point at the knight!"
His words also made the quarrel more intense, and the surrounding area gradually became a pot of porridge. Locke looked carefully at everyone's faces, and their faces were full of selfishness and anger.
Suddenly, he felt his right hand grow hot, something he had never felt before. He quietly stretched out his hand from his cloak, and found that all the bone veins on his hand were glowing with a dark red light, a color that seemed to have been seen somewhere...
Kyle stood under the city gate, looking at Locke's abnormal expression, feeling strange,
"Locke!" Kyle whispered to him, "Locke, what's wrong with you!"
Locke didn't respond, he looked at his right hand, which was getting redder and hotter.
Ryan from the city also looked at the strange child, and he clearly saw that Locke's hands glowed with an unusual dark red light.
"Quiet!" Commander Ryan yelled, instantly shocking everyone.
As the argument faded away, Carey stopped talking, and he turned around and took Locke's hand again.
"Whew, little ghost, why are your hands so hot?" Carey was startled by Locke and quickly touched his forehead, "Are you uncomfortable?"
"I'm fine. Locke replied with a blank look in the blink of an eye.
Carey looked at Locke's right hand, a normal little hand, but the temperature of the hand was indeed a bit high.
"Your quarrels will not solve anything!" said Commander Ryan loudly, "war is coming, only a rock-solid unity can not be broken, and you are now just a plate of scattered sand!"
Everyone didn't speak, after all, Commander Ryan was the one who forged the glory of the city, and everyone respected him.
"Kyle is not a deserter, strictly speaking, he is not old enough to go to war," Ryan continued, "and this Kailin conflict is not his fault. However, his actions in the Borderlands were indeed too reckless, and he should be punished for this. β
Ryan gestured to Councilor Weishi next to him, and the old councilor took a deep breath:
"The Council Chamber has decided to send Kyle to the south to build the Great Wall until next year's Century Council, and then resume his status as a knight-apprentice!"
The citizens of the city talked a lot, but they all held their voices, they could accept this sentence, but they felt that the punishment was not enough.
Kyle had thought he would be sent to the border as a sentry, but now he was a sapper on the Great Wall, and he knew that Commander Ryan had helped him a lot.
"Whew," Carey breathed a sigh of relief, touching Locke's little head, "It's good not to be exiled." β
"No," Locke looked at Commander Ryan at the gates, "that chief won't allow Kyle to be exiled." β
Carey followed Locke's line of sight and looked up to see Commander Ryan looking at Locke as well.
"Do you know each other?" asked Locke.
"I don't know. Locke turned his head and smiled at Carey, "But he's a good officer, and I trust him." β
The verdict came out, and although it was beyond everyone's expectations, it could not be changed.
Kyle will be assigned to the Wall and demoted to the rank of Sapper.
After the crowd dispersed, the three of them came out of the city to say their final goodbyes.
"Kyle," Daddy Carey hugged his son, "You're a good knight, you've done nothing wrong!
"Thank you, Dad. Kyle patted his dad on the back, "Next, I'll need your help taking care of Locke." β
"I'll go to the Wall with you, Kyle. Locke looked at Kyle and said.
"No," Kyle immediately refused, "the Wall is close to the Borderlands, and if the Alpine start a war in the future, it will be very dangerous there!"
"It's not a discussion," Locke smiled and tilted his head, "I'm informing you." Look at the back. β
Locke pointed to the south, and Kyle looked back, and a cavalryman, with two horses, was coming in their direction.
"Aggie?" Kyle saw clearly, it was Aggie, the Sentinel who had brought Locke back to Valanger.
"Take him, Kyle. Carey said to his son, "Locke told me that you still have a lot of work to do, and I believe in this imp and Commander Lane. β
"Commander Lane?" Kyle was even more puzzled, "Did he tell you anything?"
"He's a good sir," Locke said of Ryan, his eyes full of respect, "and you can understand it with just one look." β
"I won't stay in Valango either. Carey said to his son, "This little ghost says that I have the potential to become a good craftsman! β
"Dad, where are you going?"
"Flens. Carey looked northwest, "It's famous for its horses and steel. β
"Daddy..."Kyle is reluctant to let his dad go, he has mixed emotions at the moment, and he doesn't know how to express it in words.
"Come on, stinky boy!" Carey pretended to be indifferent, "I usually go back to the blacksmith once a year in the spring, but now I can't bear to part?"
"Kyle, you should always be with Uncle Carey. "He's alone in the smithy, and he's lonely." β
Kyle doesn't speak anymore, he's sorry for ignoring his dad before.
"Don't worry, when I get to Florence, I'll buy a carrier pigeon to write to you!" Uncle Carey looked cheerful, "I know you have a lot to do, you have to be careful, you know?"
Kyle and Locke nodded, but Carey suddenly felt a little sad in his heart, he didn't know what the fate of the two children would be, and he couldn't help much.
"Kyle, my sonβ" there was a tremor in Carry's tone, "I'll build a holy sword for you!"
"Daddy," Kyle cried, "I'm going to be a good knight in gold, trust me!"
"Kid, bring your 'Tony' and your cape," Carey touched Locke's head, "they're perfect for you." β
"Hmm. Locke touched Tony, who was hanging on his shoulder, "We'll see you again." β
"Kyle, Locke!" Aggie pulled two horses and ran closer, "Look what I've brought you!"
"Aggie, thank you. Kyle thanked Aggie for preparing the horses.
"No, this was prepared for me by Commander Lane. Aggie responded, "He's ready for you and Locke to go to the Wall." β
"Alright, I'm not going to talk nonsense with you," Carey waved his hand and headed towards the city, "I'm going to pack up the shop and get ready to go, after all, Flence is quite far away." β
"Dad, be careful all the way!"
"Uncle Carey, goodbye!"
