Volume 2 Ace Empire 022 The Great Wall: A Reliable Companion
Passing through the construction site of the sappers, the next section of the Great Wall, with no walls on both sides, is like a bare mountain cliff. If the wind is strong enough, it can completely blow people away from the Great Wall.
"Sir, there's no protection here, what if there's a strong wind?" Kyle followed behind the overseer, worried.
"You won't be looking!" shouted the overseer, "It's just a little bit unbuilt, and there won't be one in front of it!"
Kyle looked ahead, and not far away, there was also a team of people working.
For the walls of the city were built from the ends to the middle.
"Your work area, over here!" said the Overseer to Kyle and Locke as he walked to the walled area, "You've just arrived, follow him with the logistics of the moves." β
He pointed to a man leaning against the wall, who was also shirtless, dark-skinned, and had a number plate around his neck that read 10,000.
"Imp, follow me!" the overseer motioned for Locke to follow him.
"Go ahead," Kyle reassured Locke, glancing at him, "you should be around there too." β
Locke continued with the overseer, and not far ahead, there was a very flat stone under the battlement, and next to it stood a flagpole and a drum.
"You'll be here as a sentry in the future, understand?" the overseer pointed to where the stone was, "keep an eye on the outside of the Wall, and if there's anything out of the ordinary, beat the drum." β
"It's that simple?" the job seemed a little short of what Locke had expected, and he thought it would be hard work to move bricks.
"Come on, stinky boy. The overseer glanced at him, "What can you do with your little body?"
"Yes," Locke looked at the sappers not far away, "and I really can't do their work." β
"You can't see the outside and just stand on this stone, understand?" said the overseer, gesturing to the stone under the stack.
"Thank you, Sir, for your thoughtfulness. Locke bowed to the overseer.
"Hey, did you forget something?" the overseer gestured with his eyes to the silver coin in Locke's hand.
"Oh, yes. Locke handed over a silver coin and put the other in his clothes, "I'll give you one first, and Kyle will give you the rest tomorrow." β
The Overseer quickly took the silver coin, pretended not to know anything, and left quietly.
Kyle sits next to 10,000 and tries to say something, but remains silent.
"Your name is Kyle, isn't it?"
"Yes, may I ask you are..."
"Call me Feith, Faith Flender. The person next to him replied.
"Coincidentally, we're all descendants of the Flenders!" Kyle said in surprise, "My name is Kyle Flender." β
"yes," Faith smiled slightly, "that's a real deal..."
"Fez, how did you get sent to the Wall?" Kyle wanted to talk to the people around him.
"It's none of your business, boy. Faith didn't seem to want to mention that, "Come with me to work." β
With that, Faith got up and walked to the steps of the Great Wall.
Kyle followed him and stopped talking. After all, this is his first day at the Great Wall, and it is indeed a bit inappropriate to ask other people's background so bluntly. Perhaps, after getting along for a long time, everyone can take the initiative to open the chatterbox.
They walked down the wall again, and continued along the wall for a while, until they came to a small camp.
There were only five or six tents in the camp, and there were very few people, behind a certain tent, smoking from the cooking. Kyle followed Faith to the cooking pot, where an old man was stirring something in a cauldron.
"Teacher, I'm here. When Faith saw the old man, his tone became much more respectful.
When the old man saw Firth, he asked with a cheerful expression:
"Feith, why are you here so early today?"
"Brought a new guy today," Faith pointed to Kyle, "His name is Kyle, and he used to be a probationary knight. β
The old man looked at Kyle closely, and his deep eyes made Kyle a little uncomfortable standing there.
"Hello, Kyle. The old man offered to hold out his hand, "I'm an old fellow, call me Larry, Larry Ewin." β
"No, no, no, I'll call you Sensei," Kyle immediately held out his hands, "I'm about the same age as Firth, and I'm both sappers here, so I should call you that." β
"Hahaha," the old man gripped Kyle's hand and smiled brightly, "I didn't teach them anything. Calling me 'teacher' is just that everyone looks up to me as an old bone. β
"The twelve young men you just saw are all students of Teacher Larry. Faith introduced Kyle, "They weren't supposed to be sent here, but..."
"Alright, Firth. Mr. Larry stopped Faith from continuing, "Today's meal is about to be cooked, you and Kyle can bring it." The stairs are very high, so be sure to pay attention to safety. β
Looking at Feith's unspeakable expression, Kyle could feel the indignation in his heart.
"I raised the twelve children on this Great Wall, hahaha. "It's been twelve years since they were about five years old. β
Kyle was eager to ask them about their story, but, seeing Mr. Larry's actions to stop Feith, he knew in his heart that it wasn't the right time.
Faith took a stick out of the tent and lifted two baskets full of potatoes on either end of the stick, ready to lift it.
"The lads on the walls are very well eaten," Faith said to Kyle, "and what you're going to carry might be a bit heavy." β
"Don't worry," Kyle said confidently, "it's never been a problem for me to keep my strength alive. β
Kyle followed Fez's example and picked up two baskets.
"Phew," Kyle exhaled, "it's not heavy." β
"Teacher, let's go up. Firth turned to Mr. Larry.
"Young man has a lot of strength," Mr. Larry said with a happy smile as he looked at Kyle, "Go ahead, the kids might be hungry." β
Bidding farewell to Mr. Larry, Faith and Kyle set off to the top of the Great Wall with a dozen people's rations on their shoulders.
It feels easy to carry the grain on flat ground, but climbing the stairs is a different feeling entirely.
Halfway up to his height, Kyle was already gasping for air.
"What's wrong? do you want to take a break?" Faith looked back and saw that Kyle seemed tired.
"It's all right," Kyle grinned reluctantly, "it's just a little unaccustomed to it." β
"When I was tired, I told me that it was normal to be unaccustomed to doing this kind of tiring work for the first time. β
"Don't worry, no problem. β
Kyle was a man who had been hammering with his father in the blacksmith for several years before joining the Youth Training Army, and he was confident in his strength. But he didn't expect that it would be such a hard thing to carry things up the Great Wall.
But no matter what, thinking about the chivalry in his heart, Kyle still climbed up in one go.
"It's time to eat, brothers!" said the first thing Faith said as he climbed the Great Wall, bringing good news to everyone.
More than a dozen young people put down their work, and they didn't even bother to wipe their sweat, and gathered around.
Everyone's expressions were originally happy, but when they saw Kyle following behind Fez, they instantly became alert.
Kyle also noticed this, and he silently put the basket down, trying not to disturb them.
"The lads here are more sensitive to strangers," Firth explained, "and after a while, when you get acquainted with everybody, you'll know that we're all nice people to get along with." β
Kyle smiled and nodded, still not speaking, took a few cooked potatoes from the basket and left alone.
He walked west along the top of the Great Wall, and not far away, stood Locke. The black cloak on his body was like an overcoat, and when he put on his hat, the whole person was completely wrapped in the cloak.
"Lock," Kyle said as he approached, "what are you looking at!"
"Love Volcano," Locke stared at the south motionlessly, "and it's still beautiful when you look at it here." β
Kyle looked south, too, far, far away, where the Loaf volcano was standing quietly.
"yes, it's beautiful. Kyle sighed, "By the way, have you ever picked up gold there?"
"Gold?" Locke looked at Kyle curiously, "no..."
"I've heard that the reason why Mount Lefu is a symbol of wealth is that it is always quietly spewing gold. Kyle said mysteriously to Locke, "That's why you're going to be the richest town in the Borderlands." β
"Kailin..."Hearing this word, Locke's eyes suddenly darkened, "Yes, my hometown used to be the richest..."
Kyle finds himself sorry for Locke's heartbreak.
"Come, see what I've brought you. He quickly turned the subject aside and handed Locke a potato.
"Potato?" Locke's heart was still a little excited, "To be honest, Uncle Carey gave me the toast in the morning..."
"He was roasted by the fire of the blacksmith's shop! And there were pieces of iron for hoes in the fire!"
"Hahaha..."
The two of them chatted and ate dinner at the same time, and the hard work of the day seemed to have been left behind.
"Kyle. β
A man's greeting is heard behind him, and Kyle turns his head to see that it's Faith walking over.
"Come and eat with us," Faith beckoned, "take that kid, everybody wants to get to know him." β
Kyle and Locke glanced at each other, and they were both very happy in their hearts, feeling recognized by everyone.
"Let me introduce you, this is Kyle, my partner who brought dinner with me just now," Faith introduced the two of them as he brought them to the group, "This kid is..."
"My name is Locke, and I'm half Ace. Locke bowed to the people sitting on the ground, brushing his curls away, revealing the cross mark on his forehead.
"Your curls are pretty good. β
"It's supposed to be a clever little ghost. β
...
The group of young people took the initiative to speak, and it seemed that their previous guard had slowly been lowered.
"We're used to sitting on the floor," Faith said, sitting down directly, "don't mind. β
"No, there is so much attention on the Great Wall. Kyle and Locke sat down as well.
"Little ghost, did you pay that overseer?" a young man asked Locke.
"Yes," said Locke very calmly, "I don't want to be smoked by his rattan." β
"Cut! He's bluffing!"
"That's right, he specializes in bullying you newcomers, in fact, he doesn't dare to smoke. β
"He's just a demoted sapper, and he's not directing us to the battlefield!"
"Hahaha..."
The use of prison work as the object of ridicule made everyone a lot happier.
"Laugh what a laugh!"
Suddenly, there was a roar, accompanied by the sound of rattan pumping on the ground, everyone knows, what they said just now seemed to have been heard by their "overseer ghost"...
Locke turned his head dumbfoundedly, and the elders behind him were about to raise their eyebrows.
"Have you two finished eating, come with me!" the overseer pointed at Locke and Kyle.
"Oh, good. β
The two young men hurriedly got up, and after bidding farewell to everyone with gestures, they followed behind the overseer and left.
The overseer held the rattan and walked west on the Great Wall, and judging by his pace and back, it was evident that he was a little angry.
Locke and Kyle followed, apprehensive.
"You sleep here for the time being!" said the overseer, pointing to a small shed by the wall, "and then we will see how we perform and decide if there is a better place to live for you." β
It turned out that the overseer had come to assign them shelter.
"Thank you, sir. Locke, a clever ghost, understood very well, and quickly bowed to the overseer.
"Humph!"
The overseer didn't want to give them a second look and walked away.
"You say... We just chatted... Did he hear that?" Kyle asked Locke quietly as he looked at the overseer's back as he left.
"It should have been heard, otherwise he wouldn't have been so angry. β
"It's a real headache, it seems that we will have a hard time in the future. β
"Don't be afraid, I have this..."Locke pulled a silver coin from his clothes and shook it triumphantly in front of him.
"Forget it, let's get some rest," Kyle suddenly lay on the hay-paved mat, "I've been running back and forth these days, and I've never had a good rest..."
"Kyleβ" Locke leaned over and whispered, "war is coming, isn't it?"
"Hmm. Kyle remembered Commander Lane's words, "War is like a cold winter, you can't avoid it." β
"And what will Valanger do?"
"I don't know. Kyle closed his eyes, "I'm sure Commander Lane will do it." β
