Chapter 463: Sweet Sugar Cane Village (Part I)
The "Sweet Sugar Cane Village" is located in a good location, and it is surrounded by a community of lakes called 'Tresse', which is named after the two main lakes in the community, 'Tresse' and 'Ves', which in the Elvish language mean 'mirror-like' and 'still water' respectively.
Although the surroundings are good, this site is a bit close to the fortress of the Holy Araso Kingdom, so only halflings who are very good at mingling with other races are willing to settle here.
On the way, Barrett had heard his guide, Jean, say that the halflings living in the village of Sweet Cane belonged to the subspecies of this race. Compared to their counterparts, the halflings in Sweet Sugarcane Village have fairer skin, golden hair like ears of wheat, and most importantly, they are much taller than ordinary halflings, so the name of this subspecies sounds very atmospheric - 'tall halflings'!
Unfortunately, the 'tall halflings' are not as exaggerated as the 'Storm Dwarves', a subspecies of dwarves, and even though they are about four fingers taller than their normal counterparts, they still only reach the waist of the barbarians, which makes the unique "tall" in their names a little unworthy of the name.
Just as Barrett and his party had crossed the gentle hillside and came across the village of 'sweet sugar cane' dotted the lake, they were stopped by seven or eight halfling riders riding on a whirling oryx.
The halfling at the head was dressed in gray-green inlaid leather armor and had a metal brooch in the shape of a honeycomb pinned to his left chest. He held a mulberry bow in his hand and a weapon resembling a long dagger at his waist. On his oryx mount, an additional human-sized one-handed sword hangs, which, of course, should be called a "two-handed sword" compared to the size of a halfling.
Most of the other riders behind the halfling were like him, bows and arrows in their hands, and a little wary look on their faces. This wariness is already quite indifferent to halflings, who are more accustomed to good relations with all races.
"Who are you?" asked the guy at the head of the group towards Barrett and the others.
"I'm Ariel White, an ordinary businessman. The merchant dismounted and stepped forward, "I have been to your village many times, and the tobacco and eel there are impressive. β
"I remember you, Mr. Ariel. "If I'm not mistaken," said the halfling, "you came to us a year ago and sold us a lot of onions and turnip seeds. Sweet Sugar Cane Village loves seeds, that heralds more food, what did you bring this time?"
"Seeds of friendship. "I and my friends were passing through here to take a break from the hospitable 'Sweet Cane' and take shelter from the rainstorm that was coming." β
The halfling turned his head sideways to look at Barrett and the others behind Ariel. His gaze lingered on the Barbarian and Nightmare Beast for a few more seconds, "Although it is a rainy summer, I hope that your 'companion' will not cause a fire in the grassland. He said to Barrett.
"Rest assured, it's a very obedient partner and never does anything out of the ordinary. Barrett patted the 'carrot' under his crotch, but the latter shook his head impatiently, making the brute's situation slightly embarrassing.
"You can see that it's very 'obedient', so I want you to take care of it. After the halfling finished speaking, he fixed his gaze on the little mage Krees, who was hanging in the air.
"You're a mage?" the halfling's tone was curious.
"Yes. Krees descended from the sky and looked at the halfling riding on the oryx, "Krees Bran, belonging to the Magical Society. He introduced himself.
"My name is Miro Beeswax, Your Excellency the Venerable Mage, and I am the patrol leader of the village. "Welcome to the village of Sweet Sugar Cane, where the fine food and fine tobacco will wash away the fatigue of your journey." β
MirΓ³ turned to the rest of the halfling riders and ordered them to continue patrolling the perimeter, while he himself led Barrett and the others to the village not far away.
The Halfling's mount, the Spiral Oryx, is quite fast, much faster than the normal horses the others ride, but not as fast as the Nightmare Beast in Barrett's crotch.
The group walked around the mirror-like lake and along the iris-covered shores of Lake Weiss, and finally entered this small village like a children's paradise.
Most of the buildings in Sweet Sugar Cane Village are relatively low, and some are even small dirt bags with windows and doors, which look not much like the Cellar of Spirits, the Grey Dwarf village that Barrett has visited. But the village of 'Spirits Cellar' still has a large and empty underground part, which is its real main body, and the village of sweet sugar cane is only what it sees.
However, there are also scattered high-rise buildings, the most conspicuous of which is a treehouse-like building. The large tree house was built on the trunk of an oak tree with a lush canopy, which blended in with the whole tree. And the thick oak tree that carries the treehouse is also very conspicuous in the sparsely wooded environment nearby, and it can be seen from a distance.
The diminutive halflings in the village showed great interest in Barrett and the others who visited, especially for us, who were quite tall barbarians among humans.
The little men had a disproportionate amount of courage, and many halflings gathered around Barrett, touching his body with their hands, and a snotty child deftly climbed onto his broad shoulders with the brute's leather armor and belt, and sat there refusing to get down.
"I've defeated a tall giant!" the halfling child shouted over his shoulder, eliciting cheers from his fellow citizens around him.
"Wait until you see the real giants. Barrett picked up the child with both hands and gently placed it on the ground, "I hope you won't be scared to pee your pants at that time." β
"I stopped peeing my pants two years ago!" said the blonde child proudly, adding quietly at the end, "I mean, most of the time." β
"Good, keep it up. Barrett stood up and glanced at the sky. The figure of the raven 'Corn' looms in the clouds, like a real big bird.
"Aren't there very few humans here?" asked Krees, the patrol leader, Miro.
"Very little. The halfling replied, "Although the human kingdom in the south of yours occasionally sends cavalry into the steppes, they never reach us, but only go in a long circle. It is usually only in the autumn that a merchant like Mr. Elliel comes and buys some tobacco and honey, but not every year. β
"Honey? I thought you had sugar cane here. The little mage snapped his fingers, and some of the dust on the robe and a few small palm prints disappeared.
"Before I came to the Hanhai Grassland, the village was indeed rich in sugarcane, which is also the origin of the name of the village of 'Sweet Sugarcane'. "Then we migrated to this grassland, but the environment here was not suitable for the growth of sugar cane. Luckily, we found an alternative to sugar cane β sugar beet and honey. We still prefer sugar cane to sugar beets. β
"Where did you live before?" the little mage used the Zero Ring Spell 'Magic Trick' to create a shadow of a giant dragon's head, and then used the 'Illusion Technique' to make it roar like a dragon, this magical scene caused many halflings around to exclaim and admire, and more and more residents gathered around.
"We halflings migrated from the vicinity of the 'city-state of Motai', which was just a town during the Magic Empire, and we got along well with the humans in the town. "You know, we halflings have never really had a territory or a home of our own, and we're used to living in other races. β
"And then?" the little mage caused the 'Dragon's Shadow' to shatter like a bubble around his body, creating a beautiful rainbow.
Miro looked at the little mage's endless little magic in surprise, and it took him a long time to come back to his senses, "Later, when the Dark Ages came, the city-state of Motai declared its independence. At first we just became vassals of the new city-state, which was nothing, and it was not much the same as the previous life, but not long after, a coup d'Γ©tat took place in the city-state, and the new leader did not allow non-human aliens to live near the city-state, so he drove us halflings out. β
"Our people wander the continent in search of new forces that can accept us. But it was a chaotic time, so many races were so mixed that no one could tell whether it was a friend or an enemy who was standing outside knocking on their door. At first, our people did not plan to come to the Hanhai grassland, but wanted to go to the middle of the continent, but they were chased by an evil gnoll tribe for a long time, and deviated from the original route. β
The patrol leader said as he led the group in front of the conspicuous oak house. He reached out and knocked on the door embedded in the trunk of the tree, turned his head and continued to say to the people, "Actually, I listened to the elders all this, because I was not born yet. β
"It must have been a hard journey. Merchant Ariel lamented.
"Yes, the people have suffered heavy casualties during the migration. Miro knocked on the door again, "I heard that less than seventy of the clansmen who finally made it to the Hanhai Grassland alive were less than seventy ......."
"Sixty-three. "The door to the oak house opened, and inside stood a raccoon with two feet upright.
