Chapter Eighty-Three: Breaking the Formation
The night has passed.
The night was fine, Bingchen was in good spirits, and so were his knights.
The warriors gathered around the fire to eat breakfast, the sentries who had been on guard all night were replaced, and everyone was busy.
Although the defenders in the camp came out to attack at night last night, it did not cause much trouble, and the soldiers of the night vigil easily routed them, and as Bingchen expected, the defenders did not make a big move, because the army was unstable.
This army regarded the large camp as a fortress and was ready to defend the city.
And their leaders are well versed in military affairs, advance and retreat in accordance with the law, and if they hold on to the right location, they can hold out for a long time, which is enough for the invincible cavalry to collapse without a fight.
Bingchen wouldn't allow that to happen.
The sun soon rose, there was a hint of warmth in the air, trumpets were heard in the distance, and the defenders of the large camp woke up.
Breakfast was over, the cavalry assembled in the clearing, and Bingchen came to the front of the line.
He raised the long knife in his hand and swung it in the direction where the camp was.
The horses began to advance slowly, the ranks were stretched, and then all the cavalry moved.
The cavalry began to charge.
When the thunderous sound of horses' hooves approached the camp, Wang Baobao had just ascended the high platform and sat down under the banner of the handsome flag.
Last night he stayed the first half of the night, went to bed in the second half of the night, and woke up in the morning with breakfast.
Everything is under Xiang Wu's control.
The soldiers who had not slept last night had been replaced, and now the trenches were guarded by rested troops, who had completed their rotation before the enemy attacked, and everything went according to plan.
The archers lined up behind the second trench, after which the first trench was emptied, and in place of the archers were wooden horses, which only blocked a portion of the front because they were only for one night.
With the rising sun, the thunderous sound of horses' hooves gradually approached, and when the cavalry came to the front of the camp, Wang Baobao on the high platform finally saw the appearance of the enemy.
It was a group of overly tall knights, both their horses and the cavalry on them. The warriors were wearing ill-fitting leather armor, which looked like it wasn't big enough, and the sleeves were cut off, revealing the white cloth underneath, and the rest of it was taut, which looked a little ridiculous.
The charge of the cavalry was fast, and in the blink of an eye they were in front of the trench, and having noticed the rejection of the horses, the team in the charge turned to the right and left the position that had been blocked.
"Re-acting?"
Wang Baobao felt a little regretful in his heart, at the beginning of the ditch did not arrange the rejection of the horse, in order to deceive the enemy to jump off the trench, into the trap, the result failed to do so, after the death of the sheep, but unfortunately the time is too short, and to guard against the night attack, so failed to complete the defensive line, otherwise the rejection of the horse completely blocked the first trench, the enemy cavalry in the destruction of the rejection of the horse before the charge over the trench.
However, there are arrangements in addition to rejecting the horse, even if the other party wants to repeat the old tricks, it will not be as easy as yesterday.
The cavalry, without a banner, went around the flanks like a stream of water, and then turned. In the process, their ranks remained in line and finally they began to charge right into the trench.
A trace of uneasiness flashed in Wang Baobao's heart.
He is a demon, and his understanding of cavalry is far better than ordinary people, and this army can do what the cavalry of the demon race can't do, and their strength surpasses the whole world.
But it did not exceed Xiang Wu's expectations.
On the other side of the trench directly opposite the cavalry, a phalanx armed with spears, and the infantry, dressed in iron armour, formed a solid line of defense, which was not necessarily able to resist the charge, but was enough to prevent the opponent from crossing the second trench.
There, the centurion leader shouted for the warriors to raise their spears and prepare for the onslaught.
Then the cavalry jumped over the trench and crashed into the line.
It was a dull loud thud, followed by a series of crashes.
The cavalry's charge was as sharp as the long knives in their hands, and the ranks of spearmen split in an instant.
The barricades did not cause a single casualty, they only slowed down the cavalry charge.
The centurion roared for the warrior to hold on, and while the other side still had the advantage, the advantage of the cavalry was minimized now when they were entangled like this.
Wang Baobao watched the chaotic battlefield where the two sides were entangled from the high platform, everything was not yet clear, and the shooters behind the trench did not attack, but they were ready.
Curiously, however, the defenders did not suffer heavy casualties.
The neat ranks of spearmen had been dispersed, but the scattered infantry did not rout quickly, and they held out to resist longer than Wang Baobao expected.
Then the cavalry pierced the entire line and came to the second trench. At that moment, Wang Baobao knew the reason why the spearmen held out for so long.
The enemy did not waste any time attacking them, the charge never stopped, relying on the terrifyingly powerful horses, they scattered, and after cutting through the line, they still maintained their speed, while the cavalry behind rushed all the way to the front of the ditch unhindered.
"Don't quit!
Wang Baobao yelled, and the herald behind him jumped up and ran away, but it was too late.
The archers behind the second trench were not prepared for the charge at all, they were waiting for the harvest after the chaos was over, and no one expected that this cavalry would be able to jump under the resistance of such a front.
And so they were completely defeated.
But they had nowhere to run away, and behind the archers was a third trench, an obstacle that they could not cross.
The Judge Advocate Corps and the Centurions had already rushed forward, but to no avail, most of them had remained behind the last trench, and now they could only sigh through the trench, and there was nothing they could do.
That was what Wang Baobao was most afraid of, in fact, the first two of the three lines of defense built on the basis of three trenches were chiseled through, and the last one had fallen into chaos and almost collapsed.
And the cavalry charge did not stop.
"Horses!"
This is the last moment, the commander is in battle, the commander takes the lead, if the enemy breaks through the outer wall, it is a defeat like a mountain, and everything is over.
But there is still hope in Wang Baobao's heart.
He believed he could persevere.
The last trench was also crossed, and the cavalry rushed into the midst of the distraught archers and opened fire.
There was a high wall ahead, the last line of defense was not something that a charge could cross, and the real battle began.
It was a one-sided slaughter, this raid did not give the defenders enough time to react, and now is the time for the follow-up army to join the battlefield, but is blocked by the archers in front, and the archers are actually in a desperate situation with no way to escape.
Wang Baobao rode towards the gate, and the towering handsome flag behind him danced wildly in the wind.
