Chapter 46: The Empty Shell
Magellan felt that he was in trouble, but he believed that the problem would be resolved soon.
At the end of the day, his luck wasn't bad, and if he didn't have this water source, it would be the real trouble.
It's not that there are no canals in the desert, it's not that there is no water, and after all, sometimes sand retains water.
Eventually, though, things inevitably turned to what Magellan had predicted.
He became a real farmer.
Although as an archaeologist his job is essentially digging β purposefully and technically, Magellan did not like to dig in the soil, he simply demanded himself with professionalism and was used to it.
So in the end, he built an aqueduct out of dirt and led the muddy water into the pit, and finally reluctantly fulfilled the countess's request and let the water overflow the temple.
"It's a little different than I imagined," the countess shook her head at the murky waters, "but forget it, pray, and hope the goddess won't be angry at you for smearing her with mud, Professor Magellan." β
"I suddenly started to get scared. β
Magellan smiled and took the glass bottle containing the potion from the countess, walked through the muddy dunes, and then lowered his head and took one last look at the glass bottle before pouring the potion into the water.
It's hard to say if the potion's appearance is surprising, it's dark brown, extremely close to black, and has a distinctively bitter smell.
There are no shiny magic effects, no bubbles and no toxic smoke, but there is a subtle sense of course.
When it enters the water, it is like ordinary black ink falling into the water, because the water flow is muddy, and it quickly disappears.
But it's not that nothing is happening, even Magellan can see that the essence is gathering.
Ribbons of eroded colored light began to emerge on the surface of the water.
The change continued, and it got faster and faster, and the muddy water began to clear at a terrifying rate, and finally, the first bands of light appeared.
"It's like...... This will change the world......"
"No, the essence confluence created in this way is basically impossible to use," the countess denied Magellan's speculation, calming him down, "and the materials are hard to come by." β
"At least it can help us find the goddess. β
The temple began to change.
It wasn't just the transformation from ruins to buildings, something deeper, more important was born.
Magellan wasn't sure, but his sanity told him it was about the essence.
There was no dirt beneath the water, and the stone façade of the temple was so clean that the muddy water just now seemed to be just an illusion.
Then the gathering of essences stopped, and the power of the potion had reached its limit, and it was impossible to bring more essences.
Magellan was ready to jump, they didn't know how long the gathering of the essence would last, and he had to see the changes in the temple before the gathering dissipated.
Magellan stepped towards the surface of the water and stepped into the sand.
At that moment, the essence flow disappeared along with the water flow.
It's magic.
"It could also be divine power. β
The countess came to Magellan's side, and the only thing left on their right hand was the sand dunes, and the water source was gone, and the temple in front of them was dry and clean, and green grass grew on the ground around them.
"This is ...... thousands of years ago"
"We succeeded. β
Magellan smiled, put on his clean boots, and walked to the temple gates.
It is a pair of majestic gates, the temple itself is not grandiose, and its gate is not so imposing, but the reliefs of lions and bulls on it are full of power, and give a unique sense of ritual to those who see it.
Magellan stepped forward to open the door, but when he reached out, the stone door opened.
"I didn't hear the sound of the mechanism," Magellan held that position and didn't move, "magic?"
"Essence ......" the countess shook her head, "It's strange, close to a mixture of divine power and magic, but how can that ......"
Hearing the countess say this, Magellan was relieved, for him now, only a very small amount of magic could pass through the longsword given by Athena and cause him substantial damage.
Upon entering the gate, the interior of the dark temple was less dark, with stone braziers on top on either side, and flickering flames emitting light.
Passing where he could see the stars, Magellan continued forward, and then he saw the empty temple.
"Organs?"
Almost all the temples in the world have a similar layout, and the idol will always be in the innermost center, which comes from the sense of space shared by all human beings, and in this temple, that place is empty.
"No, she's there, but you can't see it. β
Except for Magellan, who is insulated from the essence, anyone standing in the temple can clearly feel that presence, cold and powerful, like a morning star, or a goddess, watching you with her eyes.
"And then?"
Magellan stopped and whispered to the countess beside him.
"Strange ......"
The countess was silent for a moment, she was a little surprised, Isitar's power was there, but it seemed to be just divine power.
"The goddess is not here. β
After experimenting with various magic tests, the countess was finally disappointed to confirm this conclusion.
"Murals. β
Visiting every corner of the temple, Magellan eventually found nothing but the frescoes on the walls. The lines are simple, the colors are intense, and the pigment is supposed to be a material that fades easily, so Magellan has not been found in the ruins.
"Stars, rivers, goddesses, temples, ......"
It's a clichΓ©d myth of the dawn star Isitar appearing in the light of the stars, ruling the lands beside the river, building temples for herself, and guiding her people to war with other tribes and monsters.
Nothing makes sense.
"Ah......" Magellan sighed helplessly, "I don't want to dig the soil again to divert water......"
But it's unavoidable.
There are no clues here, and the only chance left is whether the mechanism will bring new changes after it is activated. The mechanisms in the restored temple are hidden, and there is no other way to get them moving unless they attract a stream of water.
"It's impossible to turn a god into a god by turning a few stones over. The Countess stood where the idol should be, looking for clues to what might exist, but found nothing.
"But that's all we have left for now. Magellan has come to terms with the reality that "hopefully, the absent goddess is not entirely unaffected." β
"Wait......"
The countess seemed to notice something, and she began to slowly retreat, finally stopping at the door.
"I saw it. β
