Chapter 7: The Lost Civilization

The golden statues of both monkeys and strange fish were found near the ruins, which means that the hummingbird must have been near the ruins. This is indeed good news.
Helen smiled as she took two goblets from a pair of robotic arms and handed one to Magellan, who duly removed a bottle of wine from the shelf behind her.
At this moment, Magellan couldn't help but say in his heart: "Dog man and woman." ā
The countess raised the glass and shook it gently, and the deep purple wine swayed in the glass, changing the rich brilliance from dark to light, like the flame of a jewel.
"If you can, I hope that the next time you come to me is that there has been significant progress in translation, not other inconsequential things. ā
"Yes. The personal advisor immediately bent down and nodded yes.
Magellan could only helplessly say "understood". He was an explorer after all, and it was impossible not to be tempted by the temptation of supernatural power. Just looking at the countess like this, he couldn't help but wonder in his heart, could it be said that when he reached that height, he could really not even take extraordinary strength to heart?
"With Mr. Magellan's help, we have made a breakthrough in our work. At present, only a dozen words have not been translated from the ancient characters that have been discovered. ā
"What a surprise," Magellan could see that Helen was really overjoyed, "and I am afraid that it will be a long time before we can find enough new texts to solve this last problem." You tell Heck to prepare, and tomorrow if the weather is good, take the professors outside for a walk. ā
"Okay, I'll go now. The personal advisor nodded and left to find Heck, the leader of the expedition's guards.
Only Magellan and the countess were left in the tent, and he understood that the latter knew what he wanted to say.
"I'm an explorer. ā
"No, you're not anymore, you're a promising paleographer, one of the authors of an archaeological paper that shocked the world, and an associate professor at the School of History at Royal Victoria University. ā
Magellan sighed and sat down in the chair closest to him.
"What the hell are you looking for?"
"Lost civilization. ā
"I know, I'm talking about your true ultimate purpose. ā
The countess sighed and shook her head: "You should now learn to think like a historian. ā
Magellan felt despised and unhappy.
"The ruins we've been excavating so far, along with the other ruins in this rainforest, belong to an ancient civilization that has gone extinct, and we now call it the Magari civilization, which at its peak established an empire in the rainforest. ā
Helen said all this that Magellan knew.
"This civilization was once very developed, they had a religion, a systematic application of magic, a mature method of making wooden weapons that had never been seen in the entire history of mankind, and unfortunately, they never used writing on a large scale, although the writing of this civilization was very early. ā
Hearing this, Magellan was still confused.
"I came here with an expedition because it is the only site where a large number of ancient Magari characters exist. For a civilization, the most valuable thing that can survive in the river of time is writing. And whether the ancient civilization of Magari is a great ancient civilization or not, this relic can also give us an answer to the modern world. ā
"Don't you have an answer in your mind?"
But my answer was not convincing. But this ruin can. There is nothing like a large-scale building that goes deep underground to convince ordinary people that this is a great civilization that has been few in the entire history of mankind. ā
Magellan began to understand a little bit why he didn't understand Helen, and although they had so much in common, at least for now, in the field of archaeology, they were two completely different people.
"And then, people will look at it with curiosity, explorers will gather here for treasure, and finally, scholars will write it into books. Many years later, as long as there are people who think this ancient civilization is great, there will be people who think I am great. This is the greatest compliment for a history buff, and I deserve it. ā
"What about supernatural power?"
"There's no denying that it's worth a lot. That's why I have to hand it over, don't I?"
Magellan shook his head, he finally figured out what he had been wondering for a long time, but it didn't ease him.
The Countess gave the explorers generous terms, which were fulfilled, and in fact the explorers got far more than they thought.
But this made Magellan, the self-proclaimed explorer, very uncomfortable.
The indifference that Helen showed stung his self-esteem, and it was the reaction of a normal person, and the pursuit he cared so much about was denied and completely ignored.
What really makes him feel sad is that Magellan now feels that what Helen said is right.
"Who will you give it to? White Hat?"
"It must be an explorer, but he has to prove his worth to me and get all the other explorers to give up. ā
Magellan began to pity the white hats.
"When are we going to stop digging?"
"There's no need to dig anymore. ā
"What if, I mean, the explorers spread the word about the supernatural powers in the ruins?"
"No matter how many explorers come, they will not be our enemies, they will only be our friends. ā
Looking at the indifferent smile on the countess's face, Magellan shook his head and told himself in his heart: "You think too much. ā
"I want to take a break. ā
"Yes, someone will come to you when they need you. ā
"Will you go to tomorrow's picnic?" said Magellan, returning to his usual explorer indifference.
"Of course. ā
......
The next day, although Magellan was full of expectations, the weather was not beautiful, and the heavy rain completely ruined the wild tour.
However, he was not too disappointed, and after saying hello to the scholars, he went out alone. Magellan is now an outlier among scholars, and they all know that there is little Magellan can do without enough information.
Knowing that the White Hats were watching from the shadows, Magellan walked out of the expedition's camp and into the jungle.
The rain was pouring down, and the woods were full of mud pools, one foot deep and one foot shallow, but Magellan was as good as he was.
Faced with the temptation of good food, he felt that none of this was a problem.
