Book VI, Chapter 10

With his shield on his head, Deman found Clamard, who was wielding a battle axe in a hail of arrows. The Raglan brigade and the Knights' infantry were setting up ladders and climbing the walls. But the walls were so high that many of the infantry were shot down or stoned down in the middle of the process.

"Hurry up, hurry up!" Clamard roared. Deman approached him and patted him on the shoulder.

"This will only cost them a lot of lives, so that they can withdraw and let the siege troops come. ”

Whoop, the horns of the Raglan sounded, and the Knights' infantry retreated behind the shield in a hurry. The defenders on the walls cheered loudly, and Deman looked out and saw the flags of the Duke of Savaloon and the Duke of Wickwood. For a moment he was a little annoyed, and then he thought again: it is better to trap them in the city.

"Kramard, don't kill the two dukes after storming the city gate, you can use them as bargaining chips with the nobles in the future. Deman said.

"They're not going to put down their swords. Clamard swung his axe.

The Polis gunners, along with cannons, arrived along the stone-brick streets of Frost City. The dragged horses slowly moved between the burning houses on either side, and the Boriis gunners whipped the exhausted horses with their whips. The artillery team stopped at Imperial Street, a hundred yards from the gates of the inner city, and began to prepare. The defenders on the walls let out a cry of surprise, and Deman saw a knight in armor commanding a volley of twenty archers down the city. However, the range of the bow and arrows was insufficient, and the Klamard's team had erected a shield, so there was little damage to the Knights' infantry. The artillery team slowly pushed the cannons, and all around could be heard only the crackling of wood and the shouts of the defenders. The Knights' infantry was silent. Waiting for the moment when the city will be broken.

"Get the shield out of the way!" Deman shouted.

The infantry quickly withdrew behind the artillery team with their shields, and within a few dozen yards of the city wall were only dead bodies, countless arrows, and shattered siege equipment.

The gunner aimed at the oak gate. The bronze behemoth moved slowly.

Deman waved his sword and pointed at the gate: "Fire!"

There was a loud bang! The smoke filled the air, and Deman quickly covered his mouth. Iron cannonballs smashed into the walls of the gates, the bricks were torn apart, debris flew everywhere, and a yellow and white flag of the Papal States fell.

"Reload, reload!" Deman yelled.

The Polyis gunners scrambled to load gunpowder. At the same time, the Papal Guard on the inner city walls was terrified, and Deman saw it from afar. The archers, who had barely resisted just now, all ran down the wall.

"Fire!"

The cannonball hit the gate, the oak gate was shattered, and the latch behind the gate was blown in half. Sawdust flying. Ash and gravel fell from the collapsed gates, and the city was filled with wails and groans.

"U-la-la-la!"

The Knights' infantry swarmed up, halberd-armed and sword-wielding, stepping on the corpses of their comrades and enemies. Stormed the inner city. Even if they don't understand the impact of the Knights' capture of Castel Sant'Angelo on Virginia. But they knew that what awaited the victor in the Cathedral of St. Canaan was the wealth of the Holy See that had been worshipped by the faithful for centuries.

When the cannons of the Poriis were seen, Bode decided that Castel Sant'Angelo had been lost.

Carrying a bloodied sword, Pod found Duke Wackerwood, who was overseeing the battle. "My lord, we should immediately retreat to Castel Sant'Angelo to defend ourselves. ”

"Bastards!" scolded the Henry Flag Bearer beside the Duke.

"Don't you see the cannons of Boris?" said Pod coldly, "the oak doors of the inner city are afraid that they will not be able to withstand the cannonballs. Flag Bearer, you've never been to the war-torn city-state of Polyis. ”

Henry's flag bearer said angrily, "Who are you?" What right do you have to order the nobles?"

Duke Wickwood stopped him: "The Guard has begun to waver, if ......"

Boom. In the distance, there was a puff of gunsmoke from the artillery of the Knights, and then in a moment, the city gate in the distance of Bode and the others was blown into a cloud of bricks. The moment Bode felt the gate be struck, he couldn't even stand still.

When the smoke cleared, Bode raised his hand to block the falling debris and saw a mess on the city gates. Several of the guards lay on the ground in a blur of flesh, their severed limbs blown into pink pieces. The wounded soldiers were crying wolf, mostly archers who had just been transferred to the city gates.

Henry's flag bearer was stunned by the shelling. Duke Wickwood dusted off his head and shook Henry violently: "Quickly get your people out to Castel Sant'Angelo!"

"Good. Henry slowly stood up and directed the guards to retreat. In fact, there was no need for him to command at all, and the Papal Guard had already begun a chaotic rout. The Duke of Savalon, with his guards, and the Duke of Wickwood, retreated into the cathedral at the end. Some of the guards were stranded in the square when the gate was slammed open. Wood shards splattered into the city, and the last few guards were caught up in the swift stakes, screaming and lying to the ground.

"Ula-la-la!" came the savage shouts of the Knights' infantry from outside the city. Seeing that the infantry of the Knights had already rushed in through the ruins, Bode shouted to the guards at the entrance of the cathedral: "Shut the door, close the door!"

"But there's still someone out there!"

Bode put his sword on the guard's shoulder: "How many people are you going to bury the remaining three hundred?"

The heavy gate was pushed and slowly closed, and the three guards struggled to hold the latch to reinforce it. A terrifying knock came from outside the door: "Open the door, open the door, bastard, ahhhh......h

The people inside the door listened in horror to the screams of people outside the door being slashed and killed. Then, the Order's infantry began to slash the gate with their swords and axes.

"Find His Majesty the Pope. Henry's flag bearer said to the Dukes of Wickwood and Savalon, "here is the rest of the Papal Guard." There are tunnels in the dungeons of Castel Sant'Angelo, which lead to the south of the city, a secret that only the successive flag-bearers of the Papal Guard and the Pope himself know. The flag bearer sighed again.

"Thank you, Your Excellency, for your courage. Duke Wickwood said. The Duke of Savalo nodded, and the two of them walked towards the back of the cathedral with the rest of the dukes' guards. Walking up the long stone staircase from behind, there is the almost defenseless Castel Sant'Angelo. Bode walks by. Henry's flag bearer grabbed him.

"I can see you're a mercenary. The flag bearer looked at him coldly.

"Yes, sir. ”

"At this moment, I would prefer my men to be cunning mercenaries. And not useless children of the nobility. May the Lord bless you and see you soon. The flag bearer slowly let go of his hand.

"Take care, my lord. ”

Constance prayed in the chapel when he heard the sound of footsteps and armor grinding in the cloister outside the door. She knew that there were only two fates that awaited her. The door was pushed open, the Bishop of Beritz came in first, and Constance stood up. Look back. It's Duke Wakewood. The duke's armor was scarred, and Constance was uneasy.

"Has the Order been repulsed?" Constance asked, with a glimmer of hope.

"No, Your Majesty. Castel Sant'Angelo is about to fall. Please follow us through the secret passage. ”

Constance leaned back disappointed. "The Holy See has been ruined, and Virgia will be Nord!"

"No, Your Majesty, the Holy See will not disappear because Frost City is occupied. As long as we can get out. The Holy See will be able to mobilize loyal Virgians for revenge. ”

"Revenge. How many more people will die for the sake of the Holy See!" Constance sighed.

"Your Majesty, time is running out, please come quickly. Even a failure at the moment is not worth giving up for it. Duke Wakewood looked at Constance with a determined look that left her without the strength to refute.

Moments later, the Bishop of Beritz followed Constance and the Duke to the dungeon under the castle, holding a box full of confidential documents of the Holy See. The box contained the land grant agreement of the Emperor Svadia to the Holy See six hundred years ago, as well as the hadith of the founders of the Holy See. As for gold and silver. The Bishop of Belitz did not think about it at all, because the finances of the Papal States had long been emptied by the bishops.

From time to time, the cantilevers leading to the ground stood knights. At the sight of the Pope, they all bowed their heads reverently. Constance was desolate, there were at least dozens of people loyal to the Holy See at the moment. For hundreds of years, Frost City had withstood countless attacks by the East Vegian barbarians without falling, but now it was destroyed at the hands of the Knights who believed in the same Lord.

In the dim candlelight, more than a dozen members of the Duke's Guard were inspecting the secret passages underground in the dungeon's guardhouse. Henry's flag bearer gave the map of Castel Sant'Angelo to the Duke of Wickwood, who had already sent a dozen men down to look at it. Bode went down with his torch in his head. The tunnels are dark and damp, winding forward with no clue where they lead. There was a lot of sticky moss on the ancient walls, and unlike the cold Frost City on the surface, it was actually quite warm in the tunnels.

Bird burrowed out of the tunnel and was confronted by Duke Wackerwood. "My lord, the tunnel is safe, but it must have been unused for a long time. Then Bode and Constance met their eyes, and both froze.

Constance raised his hand excitedly and pointed at Bode: "You...... Is that the assassin?"

"Your Majesty, you have recognized the wrong person. Bode hurriedly dodged to the side. Duke Wickwood looked at Bode nervously and said to Constance, "You're too nervous. This is Benju's guard......"

"No, I can't be mistaken, this is the assassin of Castel Sant'Angelo on the eve of the election, and he also kidnapped me!" Constance said excitedly. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the Bishop of Beritz and suddenly came to her senses: "Bishop of Beritz, he is the one who contacted the Duke for you, right?"

"Uh......" Bishop Beritz clenched the box tightly, speechless.

Duke Savaloon came in. The sheer size of his body makes Benjue's small guardhouse even more cramped. Bode looked at Constance with a pitiful panic and didn't know what to do next. The Duke of Savallon had already heard the wind outside, glared at Bode, and said to Constance:

"Your Majesty, now is not the time to dwell on the affairs of the past. The Knights' infantry is already engaged with the guards in the hall, so please hurry into the tunnels. "The Duke of Savaloon has blocked the door, and Constance has no other way to go.

"Okay...... Well, the Holy See will go with me. Constance said sadly. Bode found that Constance looked at him with horror. One by one, the group went down slowly, with the first man in charge of the lighting, followed by the Duke of Wywickwood holding Constance, and the Duke of Savaloon and the Bishop of Berlitz behind. Bode was the last. He locked the guardhouse, disguised himself at the entrance to the tunnel, and finally closed the entrance to the tunnel. Above the dungeon, the cheers of the Knights' infantry after the battle were already heard. (To be continued......)
