"My lord!" Captain Poke stood at the door of his study, "something's wrong." He said.
Harrick was led by Captain Pock into the interrogation room, where four guards stood across the long table, two in gladiator leather armor, one in guard chain mail, and one in knight's plate armor. The young gladiators were no more than sixteen or seventeen years old, white and delicate, while the middle-aged ones were dark-skinned and fierce-looking, and their hands were bound with ropes.
"This young man claims to be Sir Jemilin Quintos of the Swadian nobleman," Polk stepped forward to explain briefly, "those two are Jamilin's companions, and this Brune is a freelancer. Sir Jemilin claimed that Brune had assassinating intentions against him, and sought refuge with our men and accused him of murder, so I bring them to you. ā
Brune shrugged his shoulders and grinned, but didn't speak.
Harrick walked over to the oak table and sat down, looked at Jemilin, then at Brunn, and finally at Jamilin and asked, "Whose son are you? Bordeaux, Lafaxi, or Goering?"
But Harrick looked at Brune differently than the others, and no one noticed the subtle change in expression.
"Duke Goering, Your Excellency. Jemilin replied, "Count Lafaxi is my uncle." ā
"I know Duke Goering," Harrick propped his left arm on the table, his fingers rubbing the short whisker on his chin, "the head of the 'Storm Knights' in the Kingdom of Svadia, who has never been defeated in all the years he commands, has he?"
"Yes," Jemilin bowed slightly, "my father said he just chose a better battlefield and timing. ā
"If you want me to say, he just picked the dumber enemies. "Especially with a bad woman and a couple of even worse sons, ha!"
Brune grimaced at the enraged Jemilin. "Why do you want to duel me? You're a good student, but you're a terrible gladiator!"
Harrick raised his hand to Jamilin to signal him to calm down, stared at Brune and said, "Freelancer, as far as I know, you have won a knighthood in the tournament, and this is not the first time you have come to Zenda, you should know the law of Zenda, any situation and any reason to perform assassination, revenge, etc., in Zenda, it will be regarded as murder and execution, whether you are a knight or a commoner. I don't want to know who you are instructed to serve and who you are serving, and unfortunately you will be sentenced to be hanged. ā
Brune exclaimed, "Wow, that's terrible! I wonder if the sheriff is too old to forget that there is an accompanying text to this law: 'If the person so wishes, the offender may be exempted from punishment,' right?"
"What?" said Jamilin's bodyguard laughing incredulously, "Are you still fantasizing that the Baron will pardon you?"
"That's true of the law of Zenda," Harrick looked at Brune for a moment before looking at Jamielin, "Son, the decision is yours." ā
"Don't rush to make a decision, kid. Brunn stretched, and the guards behind him immediately stepped forward and grabbed his arm. "We need to have a good talk, it's just you and me, you know, I have a lot of opportunities. He winked at Jamilin and smiled what he thought was gentle.
"Don't fall for him!" said the chainmail guard, taking a menacing step forward and pointing at Brune's nose, "this is an outlaw who only sells his life for money!
Jemilin stopped the guard, who was about to draw his sword. "No! He hesitated for a moment and finally seemed to have made a decision, "Your Excellency, allow me to speak with him alone, I would like to hear what reason he has for convincing me." ā
"You've all heard it. Harrick glanced around, and all the guards, including the knight, walked out of the interrogation room, except for the guard named Cole.
"I can't allow you to do this!" Cole insisted, "I've been derelict once, and putting you in danger like that in the Colosseum is the biggest mistake I've ever made, and I can't allow this to happen again!"
"Tsk, maybe you should be his nurse for life?" Brunn laughed dismissively.
Jemilin snorted coldly and patted the guard on the shoulder. "Cole, if I can't even cope with a person with my hands tied, I don't have to live, get out, it's my order!"
Cole looked at Harrick indignantly, as if expecting Harrick to stand up for him, but he only saw Harrick's cold eyes, his eyes were always so cold, as if they were always full of infinite doubts, so Cole stomped his feet and reluctantly walked out of the room.
"We were just outside. Harrick and Captain Pock, who was close behind, walked out of the interrogation room and closed the iron door.
"This way. Harrick led everyone to the other side of the dungeon, a dozen steps away from the interrogation room, where it was difficult to hear what the people in the room were whispering, but the slightest loud shout would be easily heard by the people outside.
Harrick noticed that the knight had been silent, wearing a light full knight's plate armor and that the visor of the helmet had never been removed. "You're a knight of Baron Jamilin?"
"No," the knight's voice was a little dull behind the armor, but he could still be heard to be young. "I'm just testifying for Jamilin that Brune did try to kill him, in the gladiatorial arena. ā
"And who are you?" Harrick asked, "what happened, and that as a knight you should know how to lift your visor when talking to people, which is rude." ā
The knight stood still for a moment, then took off his helmet, he had gray hair, he looked to be about twenty years old, he was handsome, but his face was pale and lonely, and his silver-gray eyes were lifeless.
"I am Leschudale, from the Gris family of Chelbek Castle, and I swear by the honor of being a knight, and my testimony hereafter is not false. Brunn, a freefreedom knight, had been verbally provoking Baron Jamie Lynn before the gladiatorial fight began, and on the field he tried to murder the baron who had been out of power, but I stopped him, and then you went up to the rostrum to read the new rules of the gladiatorial arena, and Brune laid down his arms and announced his surrender. When I was done, I went back to the rest of the Colosseum, where the Baron and his guards approached me with the city guards as I was packing my belongings, hoping that I would testify. That's all, if nothing else, please allow me to leave. ā
"It seems that in front of me is today's gladiatorial champion," Harrick looked at the knight in front of him, "Are you packing up? Are you leaving Zenda yet?"
"Yes, Sheriff. ā
"It's not easy to win a race, but only winning five in a row to advance and win the tournament in the last week of each month is the revered Zenda gladiatorial champion, which is a great honor for many knights, aren't you going to qualify for the tournament?"
"No, there is no glory in this championship. Leshudale shook his head slightly, "As Baron Jemilin said, they are only gladiators, not enemies. Yes, I thought I was going to be glorified here, and today in the gladiatorial arena I won the cheers and won the championship, but I ...... That's not what I wanted to get. ā
Harrick nodded, "Well, thanks for your testimony, if you don't leave in a hurry tomorrow, I may be able to introduce you to a friend, Kai, the instructor of the Chanda City Guard." ā
"I'm sorry, I don't know who he is, but thanks to my lord, can I go?"
Harrick could see that the young man was not interested, so he nodded, and ordered a jailer to take Leshudale out of the dungeon.
"Are you in a hurry?" Harrick noticed Cole looking at the door of the interrogation room from time to time, and he took a few steps from time to time as Leshudale spoke.
"Of course!" Cole said unkindly, "Keeping the Baron in the company of his assassins is a stupid thing that only a Zenda man would do!"
In the face of Cole's accusations, Harrick simply licked his molars with his tongue and looked at the door of the interrogation room.
But Captain Pok walked up to him: "Man, pay attention to your words, this is Dhyana, you have to act according to the laws of Djanda." The gaze of Polk and the four guards made Cole swallow the rest of the words.
After about a quarter of an hour, Jemi Lindang walked out of the interrogation room, "My lord, I beg to pardon the Brune Knight. He said.
Harrick wasn't surprised by this, and even if Jamilin did ask for Brunn's execution, he couldn't really do it, because it was just a play from beginning to end.
