Chapter 1: The Disaster of Innocence
After listening to Asa's account of how his troops had been wiped out on the mountain, the knight let out a long sigh and bowed his head in deep thought.
Asa sat in a velvet chair, fingers rubbing the soft, smooth suede. He'd only seen it before. The box used by the old pedant in the village to hold the holy books had such a thin layer inside. When he was three years old, he saw an older child just pinch it with his hand, and then that hand was beaten so that he couldn't hold a spoon for three days.
Such a noble, mysterious and dangerous existence, now being sat under the ass, makes him feel a little strange and a little enjoyable
Duke Mrak went to the Imperial City for a military meeting, where he was met by a young knight who claimed to be an assistant to the Duke.
The knight's armor and sword were of the highest quality, and the Holy Knights' insignia, Assa, had also seen them on his captain. Young, handsome, mighty, extraordinary, and noble, and with a seamless temperament, he seems to be the protagonist of a story that he often heard in the mouth of a bard as a child.
It was still a strange and enjoyable feeling that such a figure was sitting on his own footing, and still immersed in the contemplation of what he had reported, the same as the chair, but magnified several times.
"Then you are the only one who breaks out of the siege, and then you are hunted down and fought the pursuers in the lizard swamp........" the knight repeated Asa's recount. The words are clear, slow and methodical. As if he was afraid that others would not hear him clearly or misheard him.
Asa nodded, "That's it." The rush made him very thirsty, so he picked up the pot on the table and poured himself a cup, and found that it was milk tea.
"Are you sure you're the only one who escaped?" the knight asked, frowning, looking at him very earnestly with a deep, elegant gaze, word by word. As if this is a very important issue.
Although he had been sure for a long time, Asa still recalled it carefully, and then nodded: "Yes." It's just me. "This milk tea tastes good, but the cup is too small, and Asa keeps drinking and pouring and drinking. Actually, he wanted to drink it with the spout, but the magnificence of the Duke's Palace and the gaze of the opposite knight made him not very embarrassed.
The knight stretched his brow slightly, then frowned harder, and asked more seriously, "Then who did you talk to about this?"
"Nope. "This Asa is sure. He has been on the road since he came out of the swamp. Even now he has a bandage around his left wrist.
Thanks to a few healing runes and potions in their bags, they were able to walk out of the river and find a dead tree and float down the river to Bracada. When the magistrate learned that it was the daughter of Duke Mrak who had been injured, he immediately called for the priest and the doctor within a radius of fifty miles. A few ribs in Asa's chest had been attached, and they were fine with the healing, just a little fragile. The left wrist was so shattered that it took a whole day, and a few butchers and servants were brought in to find the bone fragments mixed in the flesh. After fainting three times, Asa was finally put back to the original state, and with an astonishing number of treatments and medicines, the pain was eliminated, but he was also suspected of being disabled. Now Asa pinned his hopes on the rich and powerful of Duke Mrak and the level of the royal priest.
"Then why didn't you report the matter to the commander of your unit?" The knight still asked patiently and carefully, trying to understand the slightest detail. His attentive expression was like that of a child, and there was a hint of caution in his careful gaze, as if he was afraid that something in front of him would suddenly fly away.
"Because I don't know who my troops belong to. I just saw in Bracada that there was a recruitment of temporary soldiers, so I went to participate. Asa originally wanted to ask him about the ten days' wages and who should get the more than ten coppers, but when he looked at the cup in his hand, it was silver, and he was embarrassed to say it. "I asked Xiaoyi.... Who should the young lady call to report this, she said that the Duke is the Imperial Minister of War. I just want to report it faster. β
"Oh, I see. Good, good, great. The knight's brow suddenly brightened, and he looked relieved and happy. His smile was as dazzling as the blonde hair, and it was contagious. This is what most girls' dream lovers look like.
The knight seemed to have thought of it suddenly, and asked, "Then Miss Xiaoyi, ..... she?"
"It's okay, the mayor of Bracada has used a convoy to escort her, and she will be in the royal capital in about twenty days. Xiao Yi's cervical vertebrae cracked under the werewolf's grip, and in the process of walking out of the swamp, the injury worsened due to the movement of his body, and the bones were slightly deformed. The priests of Bracada did not dare to make a move, so they had to deal with it a little with healing, then immobilize it with a splint, and slowly send it back to the royal capital in a carriage.
"Yes. The knight nodded. "On behalf of the Duke, I would like to express my gratitude to you for your heroic rescue of Miss Xiao Yi. After a pause, he looked directly at Asa and said in his very slow and clear voice: "Moreover, it is really the right choice for you to be able to report this matter directly to the Duke's Palace." I think Lord Mrak will be glad to find out. There was a look of joy in his blue eyes. "Your luck is too good, it's really good. These words were spoken especially hard, as if he was really glad for Asa's luck.
For some reason, Asa felt a little uneasy from the knight's glowing eyes, which did not seem to be a gesture of kindness, and there was a malicious snickering in it. Asa asked, "..... you?"
"Baron Clauvis Elney, captain of the Second Order of the Holy Knights, assistant to Lord Lord Mrak. The knight's gaze retracted, and his voice was steady and smooth, in keeping with these noble titles. "Miss Xiaoyi's fiancΓ©. β
"Huh?" Asa was a little surprised by the knight's last identity.
The knight stood up, his sword eyebrows slightly furrowed, and his eyes shining like blades. There was not a hint of a smile on his face, not even so powerful that it was as if his face had never been softened by a smile. shouted loudly: "Someone." Take. β
More than a dozen heavily armed guards appeared at the entrance of the hall as if they had emerged from the ground, rushing in and surrounding Asa.
Asa had not yet recovered from the last surprise and was immediately caught in the middle of another, bigger one. Stood up and said, "Is there a mistake, I said....."
The knight's hand knife did not give Asa any time to react, and cut accurately at the major artery in his neck. Asa immediately fell to the ground like an empty pocket.
"Take it to prison and tell it to be guarded, it's an important spy. The knight's voice was more threatening than his gaze, and the guards hurriedly pushed Asa out. "Prepare the horses. Standby token. I have an urgent military situation to go to the palace to see the Duke. β
It was a dangerous stroke of luck for the Duke. Of course, it's also your own. The knight picked up the cup on the table and wanted to take a sip of tea, only to find that he had the cup that Asa had just used. I picked up the pot, but found it empty.
The knight dropped the cup, pointed to the velvet chair on which Asa had just sat and commanded, "Throw away the cup, the jug, and the chair." He added as he stepped out of the door. "Don't let me see you again when I get back. β
The Duke's Palace is not only efficient in its work, but also very fast in preparing horses. It only took more than ten minutes for the knight to reach the military council hall through the heavy guards, and met with Lord Duke Mrak.
After listening to the knight's brief whisper, the Duke smiled very gently, and then said in a very gentle tone to the ministers at the table, "I'm sorry, please allow me to leave for a while. It's the little girl's business, she's messing around outside and getting a little hurt. β
In the garden outside the hall, the knight repeated to the Duke in detail every word that Asa had told him.
The Duke squinted his eyes and listened carefully. His eyes are not big, as if he is smiling when he squints, his neatly trimmed mustache, lining his slightly fat body, round cheeks, feels like a very kind ordinary middle-aged businessman who believes that harmony is the preciousness and harmony can make money.
"Lord Duke, this matter is really dangerous, but luckily this soldier has fallen into our hands. Do you think that means there's something wrong with them?, we should .....," the knight asked.
The smile on the duke's face did not diminish in the slightest, and he asked the knight rhetorically: "I remember you have seen them. β
"Yes. β
"What kind of people do you think they are?"
The knight took a deep breath, revealing a look that did not match him, unconvinced but unable to hide his fear, like a stubborn young man who remembered the beast that had frightened him. The knight frowned and insisted on his opinion, "But this does go wrong....."
"No one is immune to mistakes and mistakes, and no one can grasp everything. As long as you have passed a sufficiently rational analysis, you should trust your feelings and mind, and even if something goes wrong, you don't need to regret or hesitate. The Duke explained carefully to the young knight like a teacher teaching his students. "Since we believe that they are better at solving these kinds of things than we are, and far more efficient than us, we only focus on our own side of things. If something goes wrong, maybe there are some uncontrollable factors, such as luck, then we can't help it. At least, it doesn't seem like a problem right now. Right?"
"Yes. The knight listened attentively to the duke's words. The biggest gain from following such a boss is that there are many places to learn.
There was a trace of worry in the duke's eyes, and he asked, "How is Xiao Yi's injury?"
"Probably nothing. The magistrate sent a convoy to escort the young lady, who was on her way back. β
The Duke glanced at the knight with some reproach and sighed softly. Ask again: "What did you do with that soldier?"
"Imprisoned in a prison in the city, waiting for your fate. β
The Duke asked, "What do you think I will do with him?"
"Kill. β
The duke asked again, "Where do you think the danger of this soldier is?"
"Divulging to others what he's been through. β
Step by step, the Duke instructed the knight: "The minute he lives to come into contact with others is a great danger to us." And since you know what to do with him, you should try to minimize his chances of coming into contact with others while he is alive. β
"I'm waiting for you to decide, it's important after all. β
"Don't be too rigid about the rules, rules exist to deal with things. No matter what the situation, put your own judgment and rational analysis first. The duke looked at the knight and said word by word, "More importantly, have the confidence to trust your own judgment." β
"Yes. The knight bowed his head and replied forcefully.
When Duke Mrak returned to the chamber with a smile on his face, the ministers inquired about the Duchess's injuries. After thanking everyone for their concern, the Duke suggested that the meeting continue the topic just now: "I agree with the question of the general's request for an increase in the financial allocation of his Western army to clean up the orc tribes. After all, the security of the country and the people is the first priority, and it is also appropriate to reduce it in other aspects for this reason. β
