Chapter 11: Perron, the god of thunder
Dead.
The golden dome of the hall of the Holy Court Council, even the holy angels cast a compassionate gaze to the earth. The bishops, who sat in the central corpse of the Holy See, were in for the first time.
When Lawrence recounted what had happened in the distant Northland permafrost, everyone thought he was telling a story he had made up. They would rather believe that some mage from Black Swan Castle had committed this crime than believe in the thunder of demon summoning. The entire council hall was listening to a fantasy story as if nothing had happened, but the next moment the Pope's emotions suddenly exploded.
It was as if he was recalling some disturbing past.
Lawrence, in full view of everyone, took out two playing cards with the faces of Julius and Teutonic I engraved on them. Facing everyone's puzzled eyes, Lawrence said calmly, "This is his next goal." β
"His Majesty the Regent and His Majesty the Pope. β
The Regent Julius was slightly moved, a little incredulous about Lawrence's statement, he leaned forward and said mockingly, "Assassinate me and the Pope?"
"Nope. β
Lawrence shook his head firmly, he took a deep breath, and slowly revealed the terrible truth of the great rebellion.
Almost the entire epic continent is dedicated to the Holy See, and heretics were either sent to the Inquisition for adjudication in religious wars a thousand years ago, and then driven to a remote corner by the Provincial Crusaders, and never dared to look back at the rising empire.
However, this is one of the most audacious heretics.
"Ivan Vasilyevich's next goal is to take back all his power, destroy the foundations of the Holy Byzantine Empire, destroy the Holy See. β
"He was going to hang all the bishops who persecuted the empire, hanging their bodies on both sides of the road. He wanted to execute the nobles who had betrayed Emperor Frederick, cut off their heads, and he wanted to make the Holy See, which had lasted for nearly a thousand years, disappear and cease to exist. β
The entire Holy Court Committee instantly erupted in amazement.
This is the most terrifying threat they have ever heard in their lives.
Destroying God and freeing the entire Holy Byzantine Empire from the patronage of the Church has never had such a heretical thought, even among the emperors of the past, who had been fighting between the imperial and clerical powers.
Heretical remarks came out of Lawrence's mouth, making the bishops present fidget.
"Enough, I see. β
Teutonic I spoke, stopping Lawrence from continuing to cause panic.
Although Teutonic I was still kind, his narrow gaze revealed a complex emotion.
He stood up, leaving behind the bishops and nobles, and walked slowly towards the central dogmatic district of the Sistine Chapel, with the regent Julius following behind him, and he tried to speak several times, but was interrupted by the silent back.
"I know what you're trying to say. β
In the end, it was Teutonic I who spoke first, and he said calmly, "Lawrence is not lying. β
The regent came to power in a coup d'Γ©tat, so when he heard that the true heir of the empire was about to return, all but fear was imprinted on his face.
"Could it be...... Do demons really exist?"
"Come with me, you'll know other secrets. β
On the southeast side of the Sistine Chapel, walking through the flower-filled promenade, there is a room sealed by chains. It is rumored that only the Pope is qualified to open this door, which hides the dark secrets of the Holy See for thousands of years.
The key was inserted into the hole, and after a slight turning sound, the chain was opened. Julius couldn't believe that a room sealed with the secrets of the church only needed a key?
"No one can open this door except the Holy Purification of the Pope. That's why there are no white-glove priests stationed here. β
The sturdy stone door slowly opened, and a dark corridor appeared in front of Julius, who felt some ominous aura that permeated the door at the end of the hallway.
"Let's go. β
The Pope stepped forward, and the darkness of the corridor took a step back. He is like a divine light that illuminates the dark abyss. It wasn't until he reached the gate that the Pope took a deep breath and slowly opened the door.
A statue is presented in front of Julius and the Pope. Although the kerosene lamp was lit, the light filled the room. It was only then that Julius saw that it was an enclosed room, carved out of a single piece of marble.
The statue steered the carriage and trampled the clouds carved out of stone under its feet. Armed with a battle axe adorned with rubies and garnets, he looked majestically at the intruder in front of him.
The god, who was supposed to travel between thunder and lightning and symbolize supreme power, was now trapped in a secret room and lost his former glory.
"It's ......"
Julius frowned, he could feel a certain unsettling aura emanating from the stone, as if it had a great force, but it was sealed and suppressed under the stigma of the Sistine Chapel.
Teutonic I uncovered a dusty secret and past for him.
Even the Holy See, which spans the entire continent, has to bow its noble head in the service of God in the face of the powerful domination of those who existed in the past.
"This was a long time ago, before the outbreak of religious wars, the heresy of the Slavs, the subjects of the Holy Byzantine Empire. When the Holy See won the final victory, it began to suppress all heretical beliefs. All the believers were sent to the Inquisition for execution on charges of evil sorcerers. At that time, the Holy See slaughtered infidels and could even pile up a mountain. After the extermination of all those in the know, the heretical beliefs of Holy Byzantium ceased to exist. β
"Heretical?"
"Yes, heretical. β
Teutonic I gazed at the stone statue and slowly spoke of his origins.
"The pagans called him, Perron, the god of thunder. β
For a split second Julius thought of something, and he raised his head again and stared at the majestic statue.
And the statue seemed to be looking at him with the same gaze.
Majesty.
Those eyes carved out of stone were full of majesty that could not be offended. Like a god who truly crushes all things, looking at the small and humble ants.
Power, money, and glitz are only clouds of the past in the eyes of God.
"You mean ......"
At this time, the Pope turned his head, and his eyes were long gone from the sharpness they had before, replaced by a deep fear in the marrow.
Even the faithful servants who serve God are frightened in the face of such unspeakably powerful heretical forces.
Finally, in a trembling voice, the Pope said something that made the regent feel intoxicated.
"The god of heresy, the legendary god of thunder, who controls the power of power, has returned. β
