Chapter 292: Barracks
Maffeo lay on his stomach in the bushes, observing everything in the barracks through the gaps between the grasses. The soldiers www.biquge.info did not carry out unnecessary patrols, in fact they had a large number of fixed troops in the vicinity, and Maffeo thought that the revolutionary army, no matter how crazy it was, would not attack the well-guarded barracks with their meagre numbers and poor quality weapons. Besides, there was no point in doing so, even if they killed Elias, there would still be people who would see them as the first target for extermination.
Apparently Maffeo had guessed that Elias would not be able to stay in the castle at such a time, and that he would have to stay in a place where he could immediately lead the guards in order to deal with any unexpected situation in Orcente. Recalling the experience of entering the inner city, Maffeo couldn't help but sigh a little. Although the guards routinely checked themselves, the guys in the back attracted more attention from the guards because they were carrying weapons without permission, and they even showed their daggers out of their waists.
In the end, Maffeo successfully passed the inspection at the city wall, but the few guys in the back who were simply carrying knives for self-defense were unlucky. The guards hardly did much interrogation, and when they went up, they were beaten violently. The poor worms may not have realized the current state of the Aucente, and they shouldn't be carrying anything that would stir the nerves of the guards.
Things are much easier to do when you enter the inner city, although there are more inner city patrols, but with the density of houses in the inner city, it is easy for Maffeo to avoid the eyes of the patrols in the cobweb-like alleyways. Probably the only thing that was difficult was to infiltrate the barracks, which Maffeo climbed into inch by inch from the ground. He didn't want to alarm any of the guards too soon, as he would have had close contact with them before he met Elias, and he could hardly guarantee that he wouldn't resist and kill any of them.
In fact, the mosquitoes in the bushes had annoyed Maffeo. But he couldn't make much of a move, for there was a small group of guards sitting outside the tent not far from the bushes eating lunch, and only then did they have a slightly relaxed expression on their faces, and Maffeo could even hear them chewing. But the feeling made him strange, he wanted to side with the Imperial forces of Orcent, but now he was trying to avoid them like a plague.
Neumann walked straight through the barracks gates, his pace steady, and it was clear that there was no overly important information to report. His investigation was actually at a bottleneck, and the revolutionary army had left little to allow others to track them down. Although Neumann was suspicious of the situation at the eastern lumberyard, Hartmann, the nominal owner of the lumberyard, was able to put everything in the way.
"Give this document to Captain Meyer. He beckoned to the nearest guard.
When the guard had left, he looked interested, and he began to walk in the direction of the bushes where Maffeo was hiding. Maffeo just kept his head down at the insects crawling back and forth in front of him, not noticing the situation in the barracks, he just waited for the guards to finish their meals so that he could have room to move.
"Are you talking to Mr. Bug here? I don't think they're likely to understand you. Neumann's sudden voice startled Maffeo, and when he reacted, the former had already grabbed him by the collar and dragged him out of the bushes, and in an instant a whole group of guards surrounded him. But they didn't rush to capture Maffeo, because Neumann didn't give any orders.
When Maffeo looked up and saw Neumann, his face changed dramatically. "You, the black market profiteer?" he figured that the black market profiteer, who was supposed to be at a considerable distance from the Imperial Army, should not be present in the barracks.
"I gave you a shower, so I want to do whatever I want to do to you. There was a hint of sarcasm in Neumann's tone.
"Damn, you liar. Maffeo scolded.
Neumann spread his hands, "It doesn't matter, tell me, why are you here, Mr. Fry?"
"I don't communicate with scammers. Maffeo stood up, finally straightening himself like a human rather than a reptile.
"It's funny, in your eyes I'm a liar, but in the eyes of others you're a demon. Neumann gestured to Maffeo's half-shoulder cape.
Maffeo was starting to become wary, this guy knew that it wasn't a good thing that he had a ghost, he wasn't like some unthreatening passerby who would simply spit out a foul language or two. "Why should I care about other people's opinions?"
"Best answer. ”
"What do you want to say?"
"I'd like to ask you to go see Elias, that's all. Neumann got straight to the point, and that surprised Maffeo as well. "What?"
"I don't think there's anything wrong with your ears, so come with me. Neumann turned his back and walked toward Elias' tent. Maffeo remained stunned until one of the guards pushed him impatiently, and in their opinion, this guy couldn't finish the rest of the "feast" standing here, and they just wanted to stay away from the demon. If it weren't for Neumann's presence, they would most likely have picked on Maffeo as a skewer, after all, putting a demon in prison is not safe for them.
So Maffeo took a step to follow, and then he fell to the ground head-on, and he thought that he could not bear such a few more twists and turns. That also drew laughter from the guards: "Look at this, the demon has fallen!"
"Do demons cry too?"
"He might have hurt innocent civilians to vent his fall, but before he could do it, he would have been shot into a hedgehog by the archers!" Mockers echoed in his ears, and Neumann ignored his soldiers. Maffeo had long been accustomed to ignoring these words, so he stood up and patted the dust off his clothes as if nothing had happened.
It was impossible to say that such a movement did not attract Elias's attention, but he simply thought that it was just the soldiers telling jokes during the leisure time of the meal, and that they did not have much choice in the way they relaxed, so he did not want to interfere with them, and he could not pour cold water on the only fiery way of pastime for them in such a period.
"Elias!" Neumann greeted as he stood at the door of the tent.
"Come in, Neumann. Elias replied without looking up.
Then he realized that something was wrong, because the footsteps were not the only ones of Neumann, and he looked up. "Fry?"
"Hello, Captain Meyer. Maffeo nodded slightly, he still had a little affection for Elias.
"It's amazing to see you here. Elias subconsciously stood up.
"Me too, your men are willing to bring me to you. Maffeo glanced at Neumann, who gave him a shameless smile in return.
"How have you been for a few months?" Elias asked.
"It's okay, if it weren't for these hellish things about Ossente, I might have been better off. Maffeo pouted.
His words undoubtedly embarrassed Elias a little, after all, he was fully responsible for the current hellish situation of Orsent, but he didn't care about such trivial matters. "Sit down, Fry, I'm not going to let a guest stand all the time. He raised his hand and pointed to a bench to the right of the tent. "Thank you. ”
"Neumann asked you to come to see me, but I suppose you should want to come to me yourself, right?" Elias saw through Maffeo's thoughts.
"That's right. Maffeo nodded.
"Is there anything you want to tell me?"
"A lot, maybe you already know, maybe you don't know yet. ”
Hearing Maffeo say this, Elias couldn't help but laugh. "Interesting, tell me. ”
"Okay. ”
