Chapter 255: Stealth
Maffeo looked out of the gap in the weeds for the last time, and he was about to start his own action. The twilight www.biquge.info quickly descended on the earth, and the night was his best umbrella, and he waited for the moment when the patrolling guards in front of him left. The lights of Fort Aucente flickered on the other side, and the torches in the barracks lit up most of the sky. Only on the prison side, it seems to be in the darkness forever.
The breeder who feeds the war horses will not appear at this time, so the Maffeo can act with confidence. The patrolling guards had already walked away, and their direction was where the barracks were, so Maffeo didn't have to worry that they would turn back coldly. In fact, unless their eyes are particularly good, they cannot effectively see a moving target more than a dozen yards away in the dark without lighting.
However, plans never changed, and just as Maffeo was about to leave to get out of the weeds, the prison door slowly opened with a heavy sound. Maffeo hurriedly retracted, the first glance out of the prison gate was in this direction, he could not risk it.
The guards' conversations with the prisoner didn't help him much, and the prisoner was scared, and Maffeo thought that the guards around him must look like demons wielding their claws. He slurred his speech and stammered some movements. The guards just waved their hands impatiently, motioning for him to move his ass forward. After moving a few yards away as the guards intended, the guards stopped following him. "Leave, don't make trouble next time, or I'll be looking forward to the moment you come in again!" said one of the guards, pointing to the prisoner.
He fled the hell like a frightened bird, and the laughter of the guards rang out behind him, and in their eyes such a coward should weigh himself before causing trouble, he would not be willing to remember the time spent in prison, not for the rest of his life. The guards finally let out a sigh and turned to walk into the prison, and Maffeo, who had witnessed the whole process, only smiled helplessly. There will always be some self-righteous unlucky ones who think they have what it takes to stand up to the guards, but in the end, those guys are in prison against the cold and the darkness.
Now that he had emerged from the weeds, his body still not off the ground, he was lying on his stomach, quietly moving forward. In front of him was a tower, which at least guaranteed that the archers above would not be able to perceive him. Of course, what he had to be careful about was the tower at the other end of the prison, where the archer was facing this side. As mentioned before, Maffeo didn't want to take risks, so he only got up from the ground when his hands could reach the prison walls.
His body moved towards the side of the prison against the outer wall, and he had observed some points in the weeds that he could climb. It was some small boulder sticking out of the outer wall of the prison, and although it didn't seem so reliable, it was probably the only way Maffeo could do it. Because without knowing if there is a secret passage, it is obviously unrealistic to enter from the front, and he can't lure it away with the four guards standing guard at the door.
The distance was almost measured in centimeters, and Maffeo didn't dare to make much of a move. So in this case, the so-called journey has no meaning. He could only pray that the unpatrolling guards would look this way, and that the archers on the towers would not look down on a whim.
The sound of conversation faintly came from the walls, the only sound Maffeo could hear, other than the "crackling" of burning torches and the sound of waves crashing against the shore. This would prove that there were guards talking on the other side of the wall, and Maffeo didn't know exactly where it was, but it would give Maffeo a glimpse of what it was like in prison. At least he knew there might be someone on his right.
The northern part of the prison is bordered by the beach, but it is not the beach where the Black Shark anchored. This beach is full of reefs, and no captain wants to sail a boat to this damn place. But if he is discovered, Maffeo can escape through the beach here, as long as he doesn't break his leg when he jumps off the wall.
His hand finally touched the first small stone, which was also the one at the bottom of the wall, a few inches away from Maffeo's head. He didn't rush to start climbing, but kept his position against the wall, and first observed the movements of the archers on the tower. God forbid, he looked like he was tired, and sat by the campfire in the tower, with only half of the back of his head visible to Maffeo. It reassured him a lot, and even if he stood up, it would take a second or two to turn around, and Maffeo could have noticed beforehand.
So, while listening to the other side of the wall, Maffeo reached out his right hand and grabbed the stone and began to climb slowly upward. He didn't have to worry about his back, because it was just a cemetery. There are white crosses all over them, and the gods are with them, and not many people come here at night to sweep the graves. Even if there were, Maffeo didn't think they would notice it.
Although the climb was about the same height as Huttonmar's house, it took Maffeo more time. He had to be careful not to make any noise, and he had to keep an eye on the archers in the tower. This caused him to sweat profusely halfway up the climb, gasping for breath and exerting himself as if he had run miles.
It took him six minutes to climb to the top of the prison wall, and it took him only a minute to climb to the roof of Huttonmar's house, which was almost the same height, all due to the different circumstances. He grabbed the rocks on either side of the top with both hands, and slowly looked into the prison. The archers on the other side of the tower did not look this way, while the archers on the other side of the tower remained sitting. Maffeo decided that they were no longer too much of a threat, so he focused on observing the situation inside the prison.
As he expected, there was no point to climb on the other side of the wall, which meant that he could either jump straight down or climb over the past and go down the barred windows on either side. Either way, the risk is very high, and the sound caused by jumping directly may alarm the guards, not to mention that there is a greater chance that he will fall and break a bone. So walking along the bars became the only option, and he couldn't confirm the number of guards inside the prison, but below was a place that resembled a courtyard, perhaps where the poor fellows came out to breathe. There were only a few guards in Maffeo's sight, each of whom was easily recognizable with torches.
After taking a deep breath, Maffeo used his hands to move deftly to the other side. Now, in a sense, he's in prison. He stretched out his ghost hand and tried to grab the first iron barred window on the left, but unfortunately the distance was not enough. There was only one way left, and he slammed his feet against the wall before lunging to his left. His ghost hand managed to grasp the bar, and his entire body was suspended in midair, and he hurriedly grabbed his right hand onto the bar, and then kicked his feet against the wall again.
He breathed a sigh of relief, which didn't cause much movement. He looked down, and there were one of these barred windows at intervals downward, and he could go straight down. Just make sure you can hold on to the bars of the window below when you're in free fall, but luckily it's not too long, otherwise his arm will be torn off by the force.
As Maffeo was about to reach the surface in this way, a group of guards patrolling the prison came to his side, and he was only a dozen inches away from the ground. Although Maffeo always reminded himself not to panic before the action, he was still a little panicked when he really encountered a critical situation. The blue rose bush below gave him one last glimmer of hope, so he let go of his hands and let his body fall into the bush.
The rustle of the body at the moment of entering the flowers alarmed several of the guards, and it was unavoidable. "What's that?"
"Meow. The cat's meow that rang in Maffeo's ears almost made him scream, and he finally covered his mouth with his right hand. He watched as the agile black shadow next to his head emerged from the flowers, then vanished into the darkness at a speed that was difficult to see with the naked eye. "I think it's just the warden's cat, and it's running around again. One of the guards who had come to check it out stopped and spread his hands.
"Let's finish our patrol and go have a drink, okay?" the leader of the group urged the guy who had stopped because of the noise he had just made.
"It's coming. He returned to the queue.
Maffeo felt like he was on the verge of collapse, and he couldn't afford to take a second such "surprise". Well, anyway, he managed to get in. How to get out of this damn place would be a big problem, but now, he had to find the guy Hartman had asked him to rescue. The entrance to the prisoner's cell is easy to find, but it's actually across from the blue rose bush where Maffeo was. There were two guards guarding it, and they looked at each other's fan-shaped area in front of them, and they would not let go of anything that moved.
Although it is possible to enter from the outside without the eyes of the guards, it is also possible to avoid the sight of the guards from the wall to the ground. But now it's impossible to distract these two guys anyway, and Maffeo doesn't know exactly when they'll be changing shifts. That gave Maffeo a headache, and he still didn't dare to get out of the blue rose bushes easily. "Damn, that's really hard......" he muttered quietly, thinking of a way.
Just when he was helpless, a guard stepped out of the dark corner on the other side and walked straight to the two guys guarding the door. He didn't hold a torch, only the faint moonlight shone on his face, which Maffeo thought was somewhat familiar, but he couldn't make out because of his sight. He whispered in front of the two guards, and he looked very alarmed. Immediately afterward, the two guards followed him in the direction of the outer courtyard, as if something had happened there. Regardless, now is a great time for Maffeo.
