Chapter 10: The Ruins
The white scenery spreads into the sky, and at first glance, it looks as if you are in the clouds. During the coldest months of the year, even the stones and trees are covered in a layer of hoarfrost. In this snow-soaked realm, you can vaguely see a small wooden house half buried by snow on a hillside.
In the middle of the house, old Rohr sat by the fireplace, wiping the shotgun in his hand, which was his most loyal and familiar companion. When he was younger, he used to have a hunting dog, but the life of a dog is too short to accompany his owner for too many years. His wife also died early, and his son and daughter-in-law were also killed for joining the rebel group, and the only thing left to accompany him all the way to old age was this shotgun.
But the irony is that because of a hunting trip a year ago, he lost sight in his right eye, and this gun has since become an ornament, and the sharpshooter who has closed his left eye to aim all his life can now only barely hit a target within 20 meters.
Fortunately, Charles has inherited the marksmanship of the Rohr family, and this kid has an amazing talent, and he really deserves to be his grandson. The old man would often be complacent in his heart like this, but he rarely praised the gunsmith to his face.
Suddenly there was a knock at the door outside, and the old man put down his gun and walked towards the door, assuming that the gunsmith had returned from hunting, for sometimes the boy could not spare his hand to turn the doorknob.
In order to protect against the wind and snow, there was a wooden pole at the back of the door, and the old man lowered it and opened the door, only to see an unexpected sight.
"Ahh
The gunsmith was woken up by a sneeze. He shook his head, pushing the scene from his dream out of his head, then sat up and surveyed his surroundings, startled when his vision became clearer.
He and John were in a quadrangular room, surrounded by a black metal wall, from which a large number of murals and words glowed turquoise.
"Where is this?" asked the gunsmith.
John was standing by a wall at this point, staring at the text: "I don't know, I haven't been awake for long. He paused, as if to finish reading the text in front of him: "When I first woke up, I thought I had been captured by aliens, but after reading some of the words on this wall, I can almost be sure that these are human civilizations." ”
The gunsmith thought back to the last thing he remembered before he lost consciousness, and then reacted, and said loudly, "That's right!
John looked back and asked, "What did you say?"
The gunsmith told him about the bulge in the ground he had encountered, and the fact that he had dug into the ground to reach the top of the pyramid, and incidentally explained the principle of the bone gun and its effect after hitting an unknown metal shell.
Before John could finish digesting it, the gunsmith continued: "The river is not very deep, and there is very little chance of a whirlpool, and when I saw it, I wondered if something was wrong at the bottom of the river. At the time, I didn't think it was an underground ruin, but in a short time, all I could imagine was that there was some kind of device at the bottom of the river that was creating a whirlpool, so I fired a ......" he stood up: "Now I understand that it must have been the ruins that had an effect on the river, and the bone gun pierced through its outer metal, and as a result, the whirlpool became larger, and we came in." ”
John was stunned for a few seconds and asked, "Impossible...... If this place is right under the riverbed, and as you said, it rises from the ground and has an effect on the river, then where does all that water go? Where does all the river water, silt, and raft debris that flows with us go? Besides, this room is only a few dozen cubic meters, and there is really water flowing in, and this little space will be filled up very quickly, how can it continue to create whirlpools?"
The gunsmith looked up at the top of the room and replied, "The ceiling is intact, there is no sign of being pierced by a bone gun, and this is clearly not where we first entered." He thought as he spoke, "Hmm...... Maybe we were swept into the ruins by the current, and then moved by some force to get to the current room. ”
John spread his hands: "Okay, then...... Is it a mermaid? Or is it some kind of drainage filtration system specifically for living creatures?"
The gunsmith laughed at the joke: "Huh...... You can keep both assumptions until we find out the truth. ”
John turned back and continued to study the murals: "The machete you made is gone, do you still have what you have with you?"
The gunsmith checked it, and the personal belongings were really there, but the bone gun in his hand before losing consciousness was missing at the moment: "It's not good, I lost my gun, it's not easy to redo it." ”
John said, "Is there anything else useful?"
"Absolutely, if you can find a machine here that can swipe your credit card. "The gunsmith is really helpless, and his useless wallet has not been lost in this situation.
"I've got to say, it's not good, Charles, we don't have food or water, we're locked up in a place with iron walls on all six sides, and even if you can make a hole with your superpowers, we don't know what's on the other side of the wall, maybe there's water coming in, or there's dirt in the ground and we're buried hundreds of meters underground. John said.
The gunsmith was more optimistic: "Hmph...... If you can get in, you can definitely get out, and there must be some kind of mechanism in this place. As he spoke, he began to grope his way along the wall: "To be honest, I even wonder if these are the ruins at all, when I dug up the pyramid spire, I thought it would be a huge structure underground. But now, being in this room, I can breathe well, the temperature around me is suitable for human survival, and it's very dry, and there's a light source. Maybe it's an underground base for a rebel group, or a secret research institute in the jungle of the Empire. ”
John continued, "Or maybe the aliens buried their military facilities in the ground tens of millions of years ago, waiting to come up and destroy us with these things someday." ”
"Isn't that a movie?"
"yes, I love that movie, you know why? Because the main character is still alive at the end. ”
The gunsmith circled the room for a half-circle: "Do you see anything in those words?"
I thought that John would say some innocuous nonsense again, but at this moment, he suddenly said seriously: "Yes, this is indeed an ancient ruin, belonging to the Olmec civilization." ”
The gunsmith looked back, "Can you really read the writing on the wall?"
John said: "One thing I want to confess to you is that my expedition team is not the kind of team that climbs the mountain through the forest, then takes a few pictures, and brings back some local products. We're more focused on doing some archaeological work. ”
The gunsmith shrugged: "You just say that you rob the tomb." He didn't react much on the surface, but he was quite surprised in his heart.
The gunsmith suddenly found that people are really not gullible, although the contact with John was only less than two days, but he also saved John's life no matter what he said, and he went all the way to survive, and he also said a lot of what he knew. Unexpectedly, John, who was on the verge of collapse these times, has been hiding his true identity and purpose.
"So...... What kind of meck are you here for?" asked the gunsmith.
John shook his head: "No, that's not our original goal. The Olmec civilization was supposed to be in Central America, and I was surprised to see this kind of writing in this context. Actually, I don't quite understand these things, but I read a paper by a professor at the University of Florida about the relationship between Mayan writing and Olmec.
Putting that aside, even if some of their branches did come to the depths of the South American jungle, as far as I know, the Olmec civilization existed more than a thousand years BC, the oldest known civilization on the American continent, and all the ruins and artifacts found so far show that they did not go beyond the Stone Age civilization. So, the room we were in ......"
The gunsmith took over and said, "You want to say it's alien-made?"
John said, "I'm just assuming. ”
The gunsmith said: "If your hypothesis is true, you won't have to be a tomb robber in the future, and after you go back, you will publish a paper, make up the story thousands of years ago, and by the way, use this set of theories to explain the achievements of the Maya in astronomy, I estimate that if you can get back some of the things here as proof, you will be able to win the Nobel Prize directly as soon as the paper is published." When he said this, his movements suddenly froze, and then he said, "Ahhhh......h
When John heard this, he immediately knew that something was going to happen, presumably the gunsmith had triggered some mechanism, and he hurriedly asked, "What's wrong?"
Before the gunsmith could reply, the ground beneath the two men lit up, and a turquoise glow engulfed the room......
