Chapter VIII Frey 10
The longbow is devastating for a Dragonsnatcher with little to no armor, and the range advantage also renders the Dragonsnatcher's axes and spears useless. "For the glory of the snow!" Frey shouted the order to charge, and the army of Ice's Breath pounced on the enemy like hungry wolves, except for the longbowmen.
The battle was probably the worst battle ever fought at Ice's End, the vast snowfield was barely visible in the whiteness of the snow, and everything was obscured by blood and severed limbs. The leather war drums were filled with feathered arrows and spears, the horns used for the herald were nowhere to be found, and the bodies of the drummer and herald were not known under the scattered shields. Despite this, the battlefield has not cooled down. Wandering velociraptors and vultures scramble to tear and chew on the wreckage of their horses, and sporadic bruised soldiers wield their weapons slowly and feebly in a last-ditch fight against an equally dying foe.
When Frey slashed down the last of the frozen pirates around him, his newly sewn leather armor was unrecognizable, and his cherished ice-wolf skin cloak was torn to pieces. He stood there bewildered, blankly scanning the red snowfield.
"It seems that the blood of the innocent cannot feed the evil guy on your hands. A deep, slightly tired voice came from behind Frey, it was Weiner.
"So, the poisonous fire that no longer burns because of your cruelty is more righteous?"
"What an ironic joke. Weiner smiled and shook the poisonous fire, the emerald green flames immediately covering the entire blade, but it was obviously much weaker than the previous dazzling appearance, "Look around you, Frey. You had the opportunity to drop off on one knee and recite the vows that even a child would, and thousands of people would not die in your homeland today. β
"It's a pity. They were all warriors defending their homeland and dying with glory. When I return to Ice's End, I will build an ornate stone monument in the middle of the city to record their exploits. β
"Then I would like to remind Youan to send you the list of soldiers killed in battle as soon as possible. β
The two men watched each other's every move vigilantly, and tacitly began to walk in small steps around in circles, always keeping a delicate distance.
"Bards write psalms for the Heroes, not for you invaders. Frey said.
Weiner stopped suddenly, trying to suppress the sudden anger, and said in a contemptuous tone, "Invaders? β
"I'm convinced that as the son of a duke, I know more than you do, even if I often skip history class to ride horses. β
"Hahaha!" Weiner burst out laughing, "as the son of a duke, you should know that everything in history textbooks is bluffing, and has nothing to do with real history." β
"Then I'm going back to my learned fiancΓ©e, old bachelor!" Frey sarcastically said, deliberately accentuating the tone of "old bachelor" and sending a fleeting sadness to Weiner's face.
"Honestly, you're a lot more humorous than you used to be. If you hadn't met in such a scene, I'd be happy to have a drink in the most obscene bar in the imperial capital, and you'd be a good one... Well... Table buddies. β
"I'd love to hear what a tragic experience can force you to join an army as nasty as you call a bar. β
"Haha-ha!" Venal began to laugh maniacally, no longer a hint of mockery, just plain ridiculous, "Let me tell you the good news, Euan is a very tolerant person. β
"So what?"
"Give in, or die. Think carefully before answering, maybe we can get a chance to sit down and have a drink and ramble on gossip that can only be said after a drunken gaffe. β
"I'll remember," Frey stepped forward with his left foot, confident that Weiner hadn't noticed his small movements, "and I'll remember to bring you a jug of good wine when we're separated by an iron fence!"
