Chapter 21: Calais and the Althop Estate
The giant ship was crookedly escorted by the Imperial Navy and finally docked at the pier in the port of Calais. A curious crowd gathered around the docks, and some soldiers were maintaining order.
A richly dressed middle-aged man and a strong man in armor and a red cloak were waiting for them on the docks. Behind them were a dozen or so human-looking little lords who were trying to restrain their fat bellies. After the giant ship came to a complete stop at the dock, the group hurriedly disembarked and landed behind the marquis, and greeted them with their luggage in turn.
The Marquis Maria first introduced the gorgeously dressed middle-aged man to William: "This is Viscount Marshall, who is in charge of the administrative affairs of Port Calais, and next to him is Viscount Gordon, the military affairs chief of Port Calais." Then he pointed to William and said to the two viscounts, "This is the guest of honor whom I have met on this trip, and you may call him Monsieur William." ”
The two viscounts and William nodded and saluted respectfully to the marquis. First, Viscount Marshall said: "Your Excellency Marquis, you have been too tired from the journey, and now please come to rest and reorganize in the lower manor." Leave this ship to us, we have the best shipyard and maintenance personnel to repair it, what do you think?"
Viscount Gordon also hurriedly said: "Lord Marquis, please rest assured, we will not let go of those pirates who disturb you, they offend the majesty of your lord and there is only one way to die." ”
The Marquis Maria nodded gracefully to thank them for their kindness, and then said, "Thank you very much for your kindness, then I will leave my beloved Lily to your care." As for the resting place, I think I'd better go to the family's manor here, and I would be honored if the two viscounts could visit together. ”
The two viscounts were overjoyed and hurriedly led the way in front, and the marquis and her party followed behind and slowly boarded a row of luxurious carriages that had stopped on the side of the street early. When the convoy left the dock, some slaves with tattered and unknown tools came in from the side road and boarded the giant ship to carry out repair work.
Little Peter was watching them intently, and suddenly noticed a bishop in a purple robe quietly walking away from the other side, he looked at the figure of this bishop, and always felt very similar to the bishop in Nantes, and couldn't help but feel a little curious.
Little Peter sat in the carriage, the old man half-leaned back in the soft chair and squinted his eyes and didn't know what to think, and Uncle William sat next to the old man with his legs crossed and his eyes closed, as if asleep. As for Eva, oh she and Zoya are in a carriage, and Zoya takes care of her.
Little Peter had no choice but to turn his head and stare out the window in a daze. At this time, the sun had already risen, and the port was full of people coming and going. But as the convoy moved along, people spontaneously avoided whispering discussions on both sides and staring at them intently.
Before he could take a closer look at the port, the convoy had turned into a relatively remote place, and after a short drive, it left the city and came into the countryside outside the city. The farmers were busy harvesting their crops in the fields, and they didn't have time to look at the huge convoy. Only a few dog barks and chirping birds can be heard every now and then. Little Peter's mood suddenly became cheerful, and a smile appeared on the corner of his mouth.
Gradually, a large area of forest appeared in the distance, and the convoy drove along a road paved with stone slabs. After a while, they came to a closed metal gate, and the maids behind the door, led by the butler, were lined up on both sides, and a knight in white armor and a cloak with a brown bear tattoo first came to the carriage where the marquiss was and saluted, and then turned around and walked to the door, signaling the soldiers on both sides to open the gate, turn over their horses, and walk in the front to guide the direction of the convoy.
After passing through the gate, you will come to a large lawn in front of the gate, and a majestic building will face the gate. It's about three stories tall, and there's a lot of chimney on the roof. The whole architectural style uses a large number of reliefs, and there are many balconies on the second floor against the windows. On both sides of the central axis, there are buildings that extend longitudinally. The whole building is large-scale, and under the broad lawn in front of the door and the midday sun, it looks very solemn but has a quiet taste.
The convoy crossed the long lawn and finally stopped in front of the main entrance to the main house. The marquis, supported by the maid at the door, stepped out of the carriage and waited for everyone. Little Peter walked behind the old man and looked around curiously.
The group walked through the door and came to a meeting room. In the center of the wall facing the door, a large mirror hung in the middle of the drawing-room, which was framed in a gilded square. It is flanked by a large rectangular glass window, through which the afternoon sun reflects a variety of colors, and green curtains hang on each side of the glass window. Underneath the mirror is a wooden storage table with a pot of white lilies.
The left-hand wall is covered with huge portraits, especially the innermost one by the window, which occupies an entire wall. Little Peter counted carefully at least twelve of them on the entire wall. Below the portrait of a woman hanging in the center is a white closet flanked by a wooden table with a silver lampstand on each top. Two red three-seater sofas were placed opposite each other on either side of the fireplace, with a wooden table on the left hand side and a coffee table on the right hand side with a pot of lilies and a lampstand. Two single sofas are placed at an angle in front of the fireplace, one is white and the other is dark yellow.
Near the door is a mahogany desk with several books on it, a white humanoid sculpture in one corner and a bottle of ink in the other. On the other wall, there are large transparent glass windows, and the sunlight shines in from here, making the whole room very bright.
Little Peter and his party walked into the room under the guidance of the Marquis, and only felt warm as spring. After everyone was seated one by one, several maids served various snacks and tea under the leadership of the butler.
The marquis casually coped with the compliments of the two viscounts, William said a word from time to time, and the old man slumped in the sofa without saying a word. Seeing the old man's fatigue, Uncle William apologized to the Marquis, and three maids walked in, two helped the old man to get up and left, and the other guided William and little Peter to the resting place.
