Chapter Twenty-Nine: The Diary and Joining the Merchant Society
Little Peter sat in the carriage and looked intently through a diary that had been found in a house in the chapel.
The diary is very thick, a little yellowed, and at first glance, it looks old. The diary has a cross engraved on the cover and an abbreviation written underneath that looks like it was written by a priest named John.
He turned the first page, only to see that it said 395 years of God, which was about Father John when he was a child. He skimmed over the front section, flipped to the middle, and began to look at it. This section is written about John's studies in the monastery and his life experiences in the town after he came to the town as a priest.
Little Peter lifted his spirit and looked at it little by little, and as he looked more and more, he gradually gained a general understanding of the Holy See system, and he also understood how much influence the Holy See had on the middle and lower classes in the Holy Empire.
The diary records that Father John came to the town in 426 A.D., when he was in his 30s from a diocesan bishop to the town called Morrick.
Father John stayed in this small town for 15 years, and during these 15 years he selflessly helped the poor people in the city. He used the medical knowledge he had learned in the monastery to help many commoners who could not afford to see a doctor, and the people of this small town developed respect for Father John and devotion to the Holy See.
This peaceful and tranquil life was not shattered until the year 437 A.D., when a violent conflict broke out between the newly enthroned Holy Emperor and the Holy See. This led to panic among the people of the Holy Empire and the decline of the power of the Holy See.
Little Peter flipped through the pages to see the last page. I saw that it was recorded: "In the year 441 of the Divine Calendar, the situation in Morrick City is now very serious." I heard from a merchant passing by that he had found a lot of robbers not far from here, and I had to find a way to protect them from the disaster. ”
Little Peter couldn't bear to look at it anymore, he closed his eyes, and he couldn't help but think of the corpse that had been pierced through his chest by long hair, and was fixed under the cross.
The foot of the corpse was carved with blood in an intricate pattern that he had never seen before, and he only remembered that it was a male lion roaring angrily with his mouth wide open.
He calmed down, opened his eyes, patted his chest, and looked again. Father John wrote in his diary: "I called on those who were able to leave here and seek refuge elsewhere, and the lord of the castle had already fled with some of his cronies. People who really couldn't get out of here found me. I can only take them into the church, hoping that the robbers will not hurt them for the sake of the Lord and the Holy See. ”
Little Peter read the last paragraph and slowly closed the diary, he thought about it for a while, and then carefully placed the diary at the bottom of his bag.
When he had done this, he bowed his head, clasped his hands together in fists, closed his eyes, and prayed for Father John that he would be free from all suffering in heaven.
In this way, he looked at everything outside the window with a heavy heart, and suddenly heard the old man say in a low and calm voice: "We are not far from Kansas, I hope everything goes well." Of course, I taught you to trust your companions, so trust in your Uncle William's abilities. ”
Little Peter smiled and nodded, "I've always believed in him, you know grandpa." By the way, can you tell me the name of the monastery?"
The old man clapped his hands and smiled slightly, and said, "Oh, it's my negligence, I forgot to tell you, the abbey is called Cromwell." ”
After hearing this, little Peter opened his mouth, but he didn't say anything, just looked at the old man, and his eyes gradually moistened.
The next few days of the journey were nothing to talk about, almost just a group of people walked smoothly and calmly. Then, five days later, they finally arrived in Basque City, the most prosperous city in Kansas. Uncle William drove everyone to an ordinary hotel in the city and quietly drove away in his carriage.
By the time he returned, it was already dark, and little Peter was sitting sleepily in a chair waiting for him.
Seeing that William was back, the old man sat up slowly from the bed, gasped for breath, and then asked in a low voice, "Is it all dealt with?"
William nodded vigorously after hearing this, then found a chair and sat down, took the tea handed by Eva, drank it all, and said, "Well, the carriage is all taken care of." I got a black marketeer and sold them to him, and bought four more horses from a horse dealer. Rest assured that no one knows. ”
Little Peter shook his head vigorously, twisted his neck, and then looked at the old man worriedly, and stopped talking. The old man patted his thigh as if he knew what he was thinking, and said lightly: "Don't worry, it's all here, I'm about to go to Cromwell Abbey, and my body can still hold it." ”
Little Peter pressed the worry in his heart, raised his hand to wipe the sweat that didn't exist on his face, and then said with a smile: "Well, then I won't bother you, grandpa, go to bed early." With that, he and Eva left the room.
Early the next morning, the group quietly rode out of the city on the four horses that William had bought from a horse dealer.
Little Peter rode at the rear, with William at the front, and Eva and the old man in the middle. The farmland on both sides can faintly see the traces of freshly harvested, and the sporadic barking of dogs and birds makes the atmosphere even more desolate.
Suddenly, a caravan appeared in front of him, and little Peter could see from a distance many, many wagons slowly moving forward under the protection of the mercenaries on both sides.
In the middle of the caravan, a few richly dressed stewards were patrolling, and he seemed to see the chubby middle-aged man who was bribing at the border of the two empires. When Uncle William saw the caravan, he stopped and discussed a few words with the old man, and then chased after him.
I saw that the mercenaries at the back of the merchant group looked wary and watched William come closer, and a steward walked over from the middle of the merchant group. Uncle William whispered a few words to the steward, and then rode back.
He nodded at little Peter and the old man, and said, "I have just asked, and I consulted with their steward on the way for this caravan to stop by us, and he agreed that we should join in." I think it's a bit of a hassle to be with such a large group, but at least it's better than doing it on our own. ”
Little Peter and the old man nodded and followed William to join the caravan. The chubby middle-aged man he had seen before trotted all the way over, he greeted everyone with a smile on his face, and when he saw Eva, he couldn't help but squint, roll his eyes, and then smile and nodded.
Little Peter learned from him that his name was Philip, a small merchant in the Krent Empire who dealt in jewelry, and this group was basically a temporary patchwork of individual merchants like them, after all, everyone always took care of each other when they were together.
In this way, little Peter joined a makeshift trade group in Kansas, the most chaotic province of the Holy Empire, and acted together.
