Chapter Twenty-Eight: The Sound of Chaos
Heartless Bay, two days before the tsunami, docklands
"The last batch, the last batch! There are three empty seats on Old John's ship! Ten blood coins at a fixed price! Sail at noon!" the sailor roared in his hoarse voice. His gaze swept over the crowd on the docks, the combination of the late announcement of the tsunami and the fact that many ships had not docked again due to the expansion of the foggy seas was destined to leave many people unable to afford to evacuate in an emergency. But so what? no one, whether the captain or the sailors, cared whether these poor people lived or died, and there was no shortage of men in the Bay of Broken Heart, and there were far more exiles from all over the world than the tides brought by the tsunami. Coupled with the presence of merchants who specialize in human trafficking, human life is no more precious than the life of a rat in this port city. So when the sailors look at these people, it is as if they are looking at a group of rats scrambling for their lives before the sewers are flooded.
But be careful, these rats can be very dangerous in order to survive. They don't care if it's a human or a cat in front of them, and in order to survive, no matter how fragile their teeth and claws are, the rats have nothing to lose, so of course they have nothing to fear. The sailor knew this, so he held on to the mast behind him, keeping himself out of reach of the crowd. But he was still vigilant around, and sure enough, he spotted a figure quietly trying to climb onto the hull.
"Somebody wants a free boat! Guys, let him know that there is no such thing as a free lunch! Send him down to the sea to feed the fish!" shouted the sailor into the boat, and soon several crew members spotted the scheming fellow. They grinned, harpoons in their hands, and pulled off the hood of the guy who wanted to sneak aboard the ship, revealing a young but terrifying face underneath. First of all, it is certain that it is a child, and it is also certain that this child must have had some kind of serious illness, and the right half of his face has turned purple, and it is covered with bad sores and festering scratches. There was only a disgusting mass of pus in the socket of his right eye, and it was no wonder that he wore a hood to cover his face.
"It turned out to be a sick chicken. The sailor who had removed the child's hood said disdainfully, raising his harpoon to stab it. But he was stopped by another man who looked older, the captain of the ship, known as Toothless John. The bearded captain grinned at a row of well-made gold teeth, having indeed lost all his teeth in his early years as a seafarer, but John had always believed that it was a gift from the god of the sea to make room for these new teeth.
Captain John, chewing on the juicy palm fruit in his mouth, looked at the child condescendingly, and then whispered, "Sea plague, oh, this sick chicken can be sold to witches in normal times, and they will use his eyes to boil medicine." Don't harpoon him, he'll get sick on the edge, and we'll all have to bury the whole boat! Fool, take the oars and smash him down, and let the fish and shrimp eat his corpse. ”
Hearing the captain's order, the sailors quickly lowered their harpoons and struck the boy on the outside of the ship with their oars, knocking him down alive in a few blows. Toothless John didn't even look at the boy after he fell overboard, he walked to the stern of the boat, looked at the people in the harbor, and spat out what he had chewed into their mouths. "Ha, it seems like ten blood dollars is too much for you poor devils, and I could have left here with three empty slots and left you to be turned into fish food under the tsunami. However, I am very merciful, so I give you a chance. He looked up at the sun in the sky, which was scary-clean because of the tsunami, "When that thing goes to the top, I'll accept the two highest bidders." ”
Anyone who lives in Heartless Bay knows that the easiest way to give an answer to this question is to get rid of the other bidders. As the captain's words fell, some began to move nervously towards the exit of the dock, while others put their hands in their arms or on the edge of their boots, staring at the people around them with fierce eyes. A battle over boarding qualifications is inevitable. The captain grinned, a mouthful of gold teeth reflecting the cold color in the sun, he didn't offer such a price because of cruelty, but just wanted to replenish his ship with two physically fit crew members, and for people living in this lawless city, killing and being killed was not cruel.
The blood, flowing down the cracks in the wooden planks on the pier, flowed into the sea below, staining large areas red. It also attracted predatory fish that were originally interested in children, giving them the opportunity to drag their emaciated bodies and struggle to climb ashore at a distance. Cursing, screaming, moaning in excitement from the killing, mingled with the chirping of seagulls circling in the sky and the churning of flesh-hungry fish in the water. Is it harsh? Perhaps it is harsh for someone who grew up in a region with clear morals and laws. But for a child who grew up drinking blood, it's all too commonplace. It's not worth a second look. His concern was that he had missed the opportunity to smuggle into the ship, and that a tsunami was more dangerous than a mad crowd.
What should be done? What should be done to survive the tsunami? He thought desperately, but due to the limited knowledge he knew, the already hungry body could not provide more energy to the brain, and this so-called desperate effort did not have any effect. It was painful, he looked at his right hand with his left eye, and the skin on it festered and cracked like fish scales, emitting a foul stench. Maybe it's easier to die, but I wish I could try to eat enough before I die. I have heard that when people are full, they will sleep peacefully, and death is very similar to sleep.
Suddenly, the words of the captain with the gold teeth break into the child's mind, and the witch will use her right eye to boil the medicine. Then perhaps, they are willing to buy their lives for the price of a full meal...... The kid bit his lip, he had never actually seen a witch even though he had been born in a city ruled by witches. After all, they spent most of their time hiding in that stone fortress. "Goo!" hunger urged him, and the child knew very well what he should do rather than starve to death in hesitation. Just like everyone in Heartless Bay does, unscrupulous means, reckless of consequences, live, go to pleasure, and then die in pleasure!
