Chapter 9 The so-called superiority
When the Normans crushed Hungary, news of the allied Yugoslav forces reached Constantinople. The Romans, or rather the Greeks. They lost their voices. Imagine back then, when their empire was at its strongest. It also took Basil II several years to crush the entire Balkans. And the resistance of the Hungarians was even more stubborn. Eventually, the armies of all of Europe were gathered. Defeated the Empire.
The Greeks, naturally, could console themselves: they were fighting against all the barbarians of all of Europe. Eventually because of the attack of another enemy of the empire, the Muslims of Turkey. That's why it failed. Although the empire is defeated, the barbarians are victorious. Such a sense of superiority made the Greeks feel superior to others - both in terms of the way of life of civilization and the military power of a civilized empire. The Greeks felt that they were much more powerful than their neighbors, the heretical Catholic barbarians.
Until the Normans turned out. The Norman Empire swept across all directions, and the Emperor of the Empire was a perfect monarch who had all the elements of a good ruler in one and was completely impeccable. In such a situation, the Greeks went from resisting to ignoring. and then from ignoring it to having to face it squarely. Although they could also cite countless reasons why the Norman empire could not be compared with the great Rome. But they still have to face another fact:
The great Roman Empire is long gone. The emperor who had tried to restore Rome to its glory and came closest to success ultimately failed. The Roman emperor was rejected by them outside the city. After that, he died tragically......
The Eastern Roman Empire, both militarily and economically. Both the army and the navy. Whether it's urban construction or commercial development...... Law, political axe, scientific and technological strength...... Everything, all the factors that could make up the combined strength of the state, seemed to be inferior to the Norman Empire. This makes these Greeks, who consider themselves the pride of the heavens, the most civilized and advanced people in Europe and even in the world, find it difficult to accept. And unusually angry.
And when the Normans, these arrogant, had conquered the vast empire of France, Germany, Italy, Poland and all the lands of Eastern Europe. Compared to the Frankish Empire, which once destroyed the Western Roman Empire and divided the territory of the Romans. The proximity of the Holy Roman Empire, and even the great enemies of the Romans, the Parthian Persians...... Compared to these powerful, the enemies of the empire are a hundred times stronger, and the empire finally stretched out his claws towards Rome and towards Constantinople. Constantinople, New Rome boiled.
People took to the streets, protesting loudly and shouting at the ungrateful Normans – who, as they remember, were canonized to Egil by Basil. At the same time, they destroyed the shops opened by Norman merchants in Constantinople. Even the Venetians, Pisa-Genoians and Milanese opened them were destroyed - because they were now part of the Norman Empire.
In the port area, dock workers looted Norman merchant ships and set them on fire, burning them to ashes. The Norman sailors and sailors who arrived on hearing the news engaged in a fierce battle with the mob. Then both the City Guard and the Praetorian Guard were involved. Eventually, it turned into a riot that spread throughout the city and even the entire Thracian region. People attacked all non-Constantinoples indiscriminately. Even people from other provinces of the empire were spared. Not to mention the merchants and emissaries of the Muslims, Persians and Mongols of the East.
They seized all these non-Constantians, dragged them out of the cellars and houses, and beat them violently. Then rob them of everything of value.
Others launched an assault in the direction of the Grand Palace of Constantine and the Roman Senate. Even several Roman legions, stationed inside the city of Constantine, were attacked. People howled, roared and threw stones, even bows and javelins. In this way, he vented his dissatisfaction.
They have a reason to vent like this - because two years have passed. The promise made by their female emperor before she ascended the throne was completely unfulfilled. She said she was able to lead the Roman Empire back to its glory. In the end, the enemies of the empire were able to expand the territory of the Norman Empire without hindrance—the territory of the Norman Empire had almost doubled since the end of the Black Death! While the Romans were losing their land! This was absolutely unacceptable!
This feeling is like a three-good student who ranks first in every exam, watching a poor student's grades gradually improve. In the end, it reached a point where I couldn't touch it at all. That feeling of envy, jealousy, hatred, psychological disparity and shame is enough to make people go crazy.
The Greeks were smashing and looting everywhere while shouting slogans loudly. That's called an impassioned. It would have been nice if they had some more signs with slogans on them and banners in their hands. It's just a pity. In this day and age, there was no such thing as a convenient thing like plastic. Dyes and other things are also luxuries, so people are more likely to carry torches, pitchforks and things like that. Make this parade-like action more medieval.
The slogan shouted by the people of Constantine was almost like this:
"Kill all the Normans!!"
"Declare war! Declare war!!Send a large army against them and kill them all!, just as you did outside Budapest!!"
"I will donate a month's salary when I fight Bulgaria, I will donate a year's salary when I fight Turkey, and I will donate a life when I fight Norman!"
That's pretty much it. Once the so-called public opinion is vented, it will become a terrible thing. After all, civilians are not very smart.
So, people gradually gathered. Gathered in the square at the entrance to the Grand Palace of Constantinople. shouted loudly, asking their female emperor to come out and explain to them, what is wrong with this world?!
"Damn it, damn it, damn it! the Normans should die, and so should the Greeks!!" Upon hearing the news of the gradual gathering of the mob, Lilianu shouted angrily in her palace:
"I and my father made numerous treaties with the Norman Emperor. But when that bastard didn't think it needed to exist. I didn't hesitate to tear them all up. What a bastard!
And the idiot populace. Do they think that war is a game of play? Sending troops out because of a little face-saving problem? With a slight improvement, they think that they can be invincible in the world?! How much will the empire's economic losses be if they make such a fuss? If you're really angry, donate all your possessions to sell arms, bastard!!"
After such hysterical shouting for a while. Lilianu finally calmed down. After all, such yelling will not help. It is imperative that this matter be resolved.
"When is the army dispatched?!" asked Lilianu, turning sharply to her side, Aetius, the last remaining of the Roman generals.
"In fact, the army is ready. Queen. But what are you going to do?, suppress this rebellion?" Aetius frowned, "Although your prestige in the army is high enough. But I advise you not to do that. ”
"How could it be. Lilianu smiled wryly, "Let's go out and reason with them." ”
"If you are willing to use your eloquence and eloquence to impress people. That couldn't be better. Aetius nodded.
Then, soon, the gates of the Grand Palace of Constantine opened. Before the populace could rush in, a huge army rushed out first. Roman hoplites in heavy armor, Praetorian heavy cavalry, Trabizon archers, Seljuk cavalry archers, and even Minotaur and Guardsmen...... One after another, these elite troops streamed out. Form an array outside the gates of the Grand Palace of Constantine.
After seeing such a scene, even the bravest mob began to feel timid. After all, they're just a rabble. If the army really went out to suppress them, it would be simple, very simple and could be done.
"We don't have to be afraid of them! they don't dare—" When a Norman spy hiding in the crowd, his eyes rolling, wanted to say something like this to provoke the mob. Standing at the forefront of the army, the Minotaur, the tall, strong leader of the minotaurs, raised his head and roared loudly. The screams that tingle the eardrums completely drowned out the Norman spy's voice. The mob was so frightened that they even peed their pants......
After hearing the frightened screams of the people, the Minotaur smiled hideously. Strode forward, and grabbed a man in the front row who peed his pants in fright and collapsed to the ground. That posture definitely wanted to eat him.
"Stop!" The army branched out in the middle. Dressed in bright red armor and with a Roman dagger at her waist, Lilianu stepped out of it. Shouted at the Minotaur. After hearing this voice, the Minotaur frowned disapprenantly, turned his head, and looked at Lilianu. And the female emperor of Rome stared at the minotaur without flinching. After a short while, it was the Minotaur who gave in first. Threw the man to the ground. Then he muttered quietly among his troops.
"Well, Romans, you have to come out, I have already come out. What more could you ask for. You can all bring it up to me. Lilianu looked at the astonished citizens who had quieted down, opened her mouth, and said something like this......
