Volume 1 The Mystery of the Shadows Chapter 22 Out of Control
After handing the purple voice-changing crystal to Nefitari and explaining a few more trivia, Levi put on his cloak and walked out of the courtyard, walking in the direction of Twenty-two Baker Street with mixed feelings.
"Are you worried about that little girl named Aina?"
Terella, who had been secretly observing, somehow climbed onto Levi's collar.
Levi was silent for a moment, then said, "It's not a bad thing to think about it, I didn't want to involve Aina Cooper in the plan. β
"It's a contradiction, it's not like you." Terella scoffed, "Nephitali is supposed to be your secret, doesn't it matter if that girl sees it?" β
Levi's steps paused, and he continued on his way.
"It's okay, she won't notice too much." There was a hint of indifference in Levi's tone.
Terella chuckled under her breath.
"What are you laughing at?" Levi said coldly.
"Don't you think it's weird?" Terella's tone was contemptuous, "You are sorry for Aina Cooper, but you don't have any pity for Nefitari, what values do you have in your heart?" β
She paused and said, "Or ...... You don't have a heart? β
Levi didn't answer, he quickened his pace slightly, and seemed to have no desire to talk.
No heart......
"Do you have a heart?"
Nineveh's hollow eyes appeared in front of Levi's.
What if you don't have a heart?
Levi frowned slightly, but soon his eyebrows expanded again, and there was no expression on his face.
If you have too much compassion and kindness, how can you do what you need to do?
"To make a ...... Gentle, kind people. β
The mother's voice came from the dreadful light of the fire.
Levi's fingers moved, as if struggling.
"Aina Cooper deserves to live a normal life, and her life shouldn't be changed by me." Levi suddenly said, "But Nephitali is different, her fate was changed by me, because I helped her, and she can-"
He suddenly closed his mouth because he saw a white coat fall from the middle of the road ahead.
Levi stepped forward quickly, and he recognized it as the coat that Aina had been wearing.
"Really?" Terella's voice came slowly, "What will you choose?" β
Levi gritted his teeth and picked up his coat, when a note fell from his coat pocket to the ground.
He put his coat aside and picked up the piece of paper, on which was written in scribbled charcoal handwriting:
If you want to save this woman, come at the first fork in the outskirts of the city at once, and don't tell anyone, or she will die; If she hadn't come now, she would still have died.
The payment is:
- Don't play tricks, she's still going to die
Putting the note down, Levi's ears rang with Tyrella's question.
How to choose?
Levi jerked the note tight.
Eugene crouched in the shadows not far away, his falcon-like eyes quietly watching Levi, a pyrotechnic transmitter in his hand.
"Hopefully this is not a weak opponent."
He whispered.
Raymond Brown carried the unconscious Aina on his shoulders and walked slowly down the suburban road.
After walking for about twenty minutes, he saw a fork in the road, one to the northwest and the other to the south, and according to Eugene's instructions, Raymond resolutely headed for the south.
After another thirty minutes or so, he came to a grove, and the girl on his shoulder showed signs of awakening, but Raymond did not care, and took out a stick figure from his pocket, on which the location of each trap was clearly marked and the route to be avoided.
The branches of the trees in the dense forest were covered with snow, there was no birdsong in the forest, and the shadows of the trees were pitch black, as if the darkest secrets were buried in them, condensed into a real murderous intent.
Chanting an illumination, Raymond cautiously followed the stick figure instructions.
After stepping through dirt and snow, and through a complicated path, he finally reached a small clearing with a small wooden stake in the middle of the clearing, on which a loop of rope rested.
Along the way, even with the reminder of the drawings, Raymond did not find any traces of the trap, and had to sigh at Eugene's old spicy methods...... In this way, as long as Levi is not a Sage-level powerhouse, I'm afraid it's hard not to be apathetic, right?
"I just hope he's not a coward......"
Raymond placed Aina in front of the stake and tied her hands and feet with ropes so that she couldn't even move her body.
As she tightened the rope, Aina suddenly awoke from her stupor, looked at Raymond with fear, and screamed in horror.
Raymond didn't stop her from calling for help, just stood quietly in front of her, waiting without saying a word.
After shouting for a while, Aina seemed tired, she no longer struggled, just gasped, and tears flowed from the corners of her eyes.
"I don't want to kill you if I could." When she was quiet, Raymond said calmly, "I have no hatred for you, if you want to complain, you can complain about Levi David." β
Aina looked at Raymond, breathed hard, and said, "Why are you doing this?" β
"Why?" Raymond was silent for a moment, then replied, "When Levi comes here, you and I will know the answer." β
Aina's breathing gradually calmed down, and she didn't shed any more tears, and she mustered up the courage to say, "Mr. Levi is a good man. β
Looking at Aina's fearful and stubborn eyes, Raymond felt a nameless fire suddenly rise in his chest, and he said in a cold voice, "Levi Davy is your man, right?" You should see, he still has a lover. β
Aina closed her mouth and didn't say a word.
Instead of getting the expected reaction, Raymond couldn't help but scoff, "You probably don't know that he kissed Bertha Winston at the back door of the theater, and he was obviously going to the theater with you, didn't he?" β
Aina's pupils twitched, her lips turned blue, and she still didn't speak.
"Since you choose to be silent, stay the course."
Raymond pulled out a piece of cloth with one hand, and with the other he broke Aina's mouth, crumpling the cloth into her mouth and stuffing it into her mouth.
"I've told Levi where you are, and you'd better pray that he'll come and save you." Raymond stood up, glanced at Aina, and followed the stick figure to a safe hiding spot, Eugene's instructions.
Raymond used his hands to pluck through the snow, and there were several ropes buried under the roots of the large tree, which were the triggers for some of the traps, allowing him to open them manually.
Aina lay in front of the stump, Raymond's words echoing in her head, Levi's voice and smile in front of her eyes, but from time to time she remembered the image of him kissing other women.
He hugged the woman, and the two kissed so emotionally; He looked at himself with a smile and politely said "Miss Aina"; He overslept every day and ran to the bachelor's house in a panic; He often smiled and told himself stories, and lied that he was the prince of fairy tales; Nothingness, he said, is something that has no meaning.
I know that death is also a kind of nothingness, and I am not afraid of nothingness.
"Don't come, Mr. Levi."
Even if she didn't know if it was sincere, Aina shouted silently in her heart.
Don't come......
Eight years ago, when he first arrived at 22 Baker Street, he looked like a childish teenager, with a lingering haze in his eyes and a gentle smile on his face.
That day, dressed in tattered clothes, he stretched out his palm to his father, and there were only two dirty silver coins in his palm, which he said were all his money.
At the age of eleven, she only dared to poke her head out and hide behind her father to watch him.
He was thin, looked like he hadn't eaten in a long time, and his fingers were covered in scars and mud between them.
So my father said let's stay.
So for eight years, the rent has been two silver coins.
Hayes Manor, in a humble wooden house.
Cezel Garcia lay in bed, and after a long day of training, his whole body ached, and as soon as he collapsed in bed, he immediately fell into a deep sleep.
An empty wine bottle sat next to his pillow, and in the bottle lay an immobile golden beetle, seemingly asleep with him.
Suddenly, the golden beetle's wings vibrate, and its belly glowed like red-hot iron.
The beetle slammed against the inner wall of the glass bottle, making a slight noise.
Cizer opened his eyes, immediately sat up from the bed, and picked up the glass bottle.
Realizing that the beetle was trying to escape the bottle, he put on his clothes, grabbed his iron sword, and quickly opened the cap.
The glowing golden beetle fluttered its wings and flew out, and Cizer ran out of the room after it.
"I don't have any problem with your decision, because it's none of my business."
Terella's voice came from Levi's collar.
"But I have to warn you that if you were calm, you would never make this choice."
Without answering Terella, Levi had already reached the foot of the western wall, his hands in his pockets and his fingertips still clutching the shattered corpse of the insect.
In the bitter cold wind, he raised his head to look at the Canglan River on the side, and there was an unknown thickness of ice on the surface of the river.
The city gates are closed at night, so the only way to get out of the city is to walk over the frosty river.
"I left the means ahead of time, Terella." Levi looked at the river, narrowed his eyes, and said, "So saving Aina is a very calm choice. β
"You mean Cizer Garcia and his primers?" Terella said coldly, "As you said before, you don't know if the secret enemy is Curran or someone else, if the opponent is Prince Gore, can Cizer help you get out of trouble?" I've seen him, and he's still far from it. β
She paused and said, "And that's an extraordinary means you left for yourself when you're in danger, and even you're not very sure, right?" β
"I know, you're just worried that no one will do that for you when I'm dead." Levi said calmly, "So you don't have to pretend that you don't care about yourself, you have time to talk nonsense, why don't you tell me how much real power you have." β
Terella was silent for a moment, then scoffed, "Trust me, you don't want to know the answer. β
Levi took a deep breath and put his foot on the ice, making a slight squeak.
Carefully balancing, he slowly walked out of the city with his feet on the ice.
"One thing is for sure, the enemy is very sure of my movements, and the conditions put forward are also very special, so there must be a guy watching me in the dark, and I can't find him, otherwise that person will probably have a way to send out the signal immediately, and Aina will die."
"I can also be sure that the first fork in the western suburbs of the city is not the final destination, and when I arrive, I should receive instructions for the next step."
"The note left for me was written improvised with charcoal, so the enemy's plan is not long-planned, but it is likely that he has been following me for some time."
"The enemy is not sure of my strength, or rather is not sure that he will kill me quietly, but it is also possible to ask me some questions...... That's why they led me out of the city. β
Levi whispered as he walked through the river cave under the walls, climbed from the ice to the shore, came outside the city of Slom, and walked west along the path without looking back.
"Even if you can speculate on this, it won't really help save people." Terella's voice was tired.
"There's more I can deduce." Levi said, "Just give me a little more time and give me some clues......
"Have you figured it out, Levi Hammurabi?"
Terella suddenly called out his real name.
"You could die, and your huge plans haven't even begun, are you willing to die for a neighborhood girl?"
Levi continued to walk forward.
"Reluctantly." He whispered, "So it's good not to die." β
He silently calculated in his mind how much time it would take to get here from Hayes Manor on the outskirts of the south, and to infer how long he would have to delay.
Twenty minutes later, he saw a fork in the road.
After stopping, Levi did not waste his efforts to find the person who was following him, but stood quietly in place, waiting for the enemy to give him the next address.
"All I can say to you is that I don't have much strength."
Terella's voice came slowly.
"The remnants of the Frost King's body can only create some coercion and illusions, and these tricks can't deceive too strong enemies."
Levi nodded, his lips whispered: "The enemy may not be strong, I will take your strength into account." β
Terrella snorted softly, saying no more.
Suddenly, Levi heard a faint sound of thunder in the sky behind him.
He turned to look in the direction of Slom City, and in the sky, the dark blue sea of stars outside the upside-down palace showed signs of fading, and the edge of the blue void was like the sea at low tide, slowly shrinking towards the palace.
"It's ......"
He stared at Ji Ling and muttered to himself.
Terella poked her head out of his collar, looked above the royal capital, and said in a complicated tone: "They can't open the Ji Ling, but they have to use the eggshell as a carrier to 'cross the sea'...... Is it time to use rituals to weaken the barriers of the void? Even if it can only be weakened for a moment. β
As she spoke, the dark blue sea of nothingness was only a shallow layer, which could only wrap around the entire tomb.
"Wait, it's time for the Sea of Nothingness to shrink......" Levi seemed to think of something, and a bad premonition rose in his heart, "So ......"
"That's right."
Terrella sighed softly.
"Terella, wait a minuteβ"
Levi's words had barely been uttered when he lost the ability to speak.
His vision was filled with an infinite and deep blue, and his body seemed to have lost the restraint of gravity, and he could not feel the sensation of standing.
He saw countless stars zoom in rapidly, and in an instant, they were thrown behind him, turning into small points of light againβ
"Did something happen?"
Eugene crawled in the haystack in the wilderness, glancing back at the deep blue starry sky in the sky behind him.
The strange melody of muffled thunder vanished, and the tide of the void that had contracted to the extreme spread again, taking over the entire Slom. The deep blue starry sky shrouded the underside of the overhanging palace like a hazy veil, separating the city of Slom from the darkness of the outside world.
"I don't know what that palace is, but I must convey it to the Marquis." Eugene muttered to himself, leaned down, and refocused his gaze on the fork in the road.
"What?"
Eugene's pupils trembled violently, and cold sweat flowed down his back.
Levi Davy disappeared?
Am I being discovered?
A bad feeling rose in his heart, and as an experienced hunter, he knew very well that when a hunter lost track of his prey, he had to watch out for his own back.
A dagger slipped silently out of his sleeve, clutched tightly in the palm of his hand.
Ready for the assault, he immediately turned over and stabbed the dagger behind him with the dagger in his hand, but nothing was stabbed.
Behind him, there was not a single figure except for the white fields and clusters of dead grass.
"Am I overthinking?"
Eugene scanned the surroundings with minimal movement, but found nothing.
He fled...... It seems that Levi Davy finally chose to give up on the girl. He whispered to himself, "Then we can only send him her head." β
The golden beetle roared forward, paused for a moment, flapped its wings towards the sky overhead, and finally turned into a flaming spot of light in a crackling flash of light.
When Cizer followed its rays, there was no sign of it except a barren snowfield and a pile of charred ashes.
Levi's ...... Where have you been? β
He stood there in a daze, clenching the iron sword in his hand, and a deep uneasiness welled up in his heart.
("He came to Slom at the age of seventeen, and Saladin left the village at the age of seventeen...... Why marvel at coincidences? Fate had already arranged everything. βGeneral History of the Continent β’ The Dark Dynasty)
