Chapter 20: The Kingdom
Robert was not a good king, and I am afraid that few people in the Seven Kingdoms, inside and outside the court, did not admit it. However, although this guy has all kinds of wine, wealth, and luxury, and his life is a mess, he knows very well in his heart - he doesn't like and don't trust the Lannisters. The former good prime minister and his adoptive father are hanging, and he doesn't want to take care of things just for pleasure, so he can't let the whole country fall into the hands of the queen's family.
The center of power in the country needs to be balanced.
Then he remembered his good brother who had been forgotten in the north, Eddard Stark.
And to ask the Guardian of the North to King's Landing to be Prime Minister, things are not so simple.
It's a long story, Westeros' society runs under a typical but slightly weird feudal system: on the surface, the king is similar to the ancient Zhou Tianzi of the Celestial Empire, and the major dukes are the princes, but the problem is-
Of the eight families that now control the nine districts of Westeros, except for Robert's own family, none of them are divided and supported by the ruler who sits on the Iron Throne.
The reason why his war to destroy the Targaryens and claim the Iron Throne was dubbed the "Raider" was precisely because of this: Baratheon did not change the dynasty in the true sense of the word, but simply replaced the Dragons on the throne...... The kingdom is still the same as Aegon after conquering the Seven Kingdoms.
***
Needless to say, Stark in the North, Lannister in the West, Arryn in the Vale, and Martell in the Dorn Realm were already crowned rulers of their respective realms before Aegon's conquest - not only recognized by vassals, but also indeed capable of dominating. After being conquered, he only gave up his original title of King Targaryen, and continued to live as usual in the territory.
Tully and Tyrell in the Riverlands and the Tyrells, as well as the Greyjoy family in the Wairon Isles, were only "upgraded" from the powerful princes and vassal families under the command of the King of Heron and the Riverbend to become the new owners of the three lands because they surrendered quickly and in time.
Only the Baratheon family rose to the top because of the founder of the family, Auris Baratheon, who followed Aegon and made great contributions during the War of Conquest. Even he had to take over the Stormlands to occupy the Storm King's castle, marry his daughter, and adopt his banner, family crest, and motto in order to secure his rule.
From a modern perspective, Aegon's conquest and Qin Shi Huang's feat of unifying the Six Kingdoms and establishing centralized power are not at all comparable. The former only won every key battle with the dragon as a big killer, and at best subdued the Seven Kingdoms, but in fact, he did not have the energy and proper administrative system to manage the Seven Kingdoms and make them one, so he could only retreat to the second best thing and let the countries recognize their dominance.
However, it is not that Aegon is not enterprising, but it is really helpless: due to the special climate and environment, the world of ice and fire is backward in science and technology, vast and sparsely populated, and the transportation is underdeveloped and unable to maintain a sufficient standing army. If the whole country is unable to achieve the order of the day, it will be difficult for the Wang government to remain strong, and it will indeed be difficult to achieve the centralization of power.
It is precisely for these reasons that "cutting the grass and eradicating the roots" is a very rare concept in this world: even if the original ruler is really wiped out, the victor still has to choose a local to fill the place of the former, and even if the aristocratic class is eliminated and officials are appointed to centralize the rule, the situation of the emperor will quickly turn the bureaucrats into warlords, dividing one side and disobeying the king......
Anyone who tries to change the situation and break the status quo will face resistance to terror. And this is probably the most vivid example of "backward productive forces restricting the development of the superstructure".
......
Three hundred years later, the family that occupies the Iron Throne has changed from Targaryen to Baratheon, the youngest of the eight families, and the unfounded Robert has neither supported any new loyal families after the War of the Reachers, nor has he been a big killer like the dragon...... Sitting on the Iron Throne ruling over seven families with older roots and deeper roots than his own, and without the strength and means to deal with this form, the once powerful warrior was actually quite uncomfortable to be king, and it is no wonder that he indulged in drinking and hunting all day long.
This is another true embodiment of "it is easy to fight the country and it is difficult to defend the country". In order to stabilize his rule, Robert had to marry the daughter of the resentful Lannisters, and leave his adoptive father, the Duke of Arryn, as prime minister in King's Landing.
Having said all this, I actually just want to explain one thing: the owner of the Iron Throne only has the title of king, and the other seven families are actually at the same level in terms of identity and strength, and the control over the seven kingdoms is completely determined by the strength and means: if you have the upper hand, you will be the co-ruler of the world; once you are weak, you will immediately be beaten back to its original form and become a big nobleman like everyone else, and you can still become the target of plunder and invasion.
Robert couldn't get an edict to pull Eddard Stark, the de facto ruler of the North, out of his cosy nest and into King's Landing to wipe his ass...... In addition, the relationship between the two is more like a brother than a monarch, so he has to make a trip himself. Not only that, but he also wanted to get married by the way, so that the great alliance of the five families of deer, wolf, lion, eagle, and fish would continue even after his death, so that Baratheon would be like the other seven families for thousands of generations.
Although Robert is a bastard king, he was born into a family, and his basic power tricks and strategic vision are not bad at all. So...... He's coming, and he's going to stay for a while.

Whether it's Gary and Will, who are close to the Night's Watch Rangers, or the higher-ranking Commander-in-Chief Weimar Royce, Bunyan Stark, and even Mormont, or the kings and queens who come to Winterfell and see a whole bunch of Baratheon, Stark, and Lannister...... In fact, they are all different from the images that Iger saw on the screen before the crossing. This made him understand that he was crossing into a real world, not a TV series.
Fortunately, the recorded history, the plot development so far, and the personalities and tempers of the characters he has come into contact with are still very similar to the stories he is familiar with, which is a huge golden finger, so that as long as he is a little prepared, he can easily "see people and talk about people, and talk about ghosts", and interact with each character who has his own impression in a targeted manner.
Speaking of which, I have to mention. The two people who came to his room tonight are both out-and-out important characters: without any plot analysis and just looking at the data, Tyrion Lannister and Jon Snow are the key characters who dominate the first and second places without suspense in both the length of the original book and the number of lines in the play - even the Mother of Dragons can only be relegated to third.
If you talk about heroes with a sense of existence, it is not an exaggeration to say that these two people are the protagonists, because of this, there are countless character analyses of the growth process, mental journey and personality characteristics of these two people that Egg has seen on the Internet before crossing over, and the so-called bystanders are clear...... The traverser may know the two "protagonists" better than they do.
The evidence of the existence of the stranger did not deter the bastards, but instead made Jon decide to join the Night's Watch earlier, which was a minor accident, but it was harmless, and Egg had no intention of interfering. The boy who has not yet put on the black clothes is still only a small character, but the dwarf, nicknamed the little devil, already has influence with his noble birth and wisdom...... Now, Egger has been promised the latter's help, albeit only verbally, but given his knowledge of his character, the traverser decides to trust him.
But it's not that simple, Tyrion is not a king after all, or even the head of his own family, he is just a noble kid who has everything from his powerful and wealthy father, Duke Tywin. Although he is a candidate for the heir to the Lannister theory, he is actually completely excluded from the core of power, and he does not claim to help him get out of the Great Wall, so he will definitely be able to do it.
In addition, according to the original plot development, the gnomes themselves were actually unable to leave the North and return to King's Landing or the West.
Therefore, before he really accepted Tyrion's help, Egg was afraid that he would have to worry about the other party first.
