Chapter 5: Two months
That day's exchange didn't seem to have much of an impact on the relationship between Agnes and Lani, but it only made Lani appear much more silent and well-behaved most of the time.
Many times, Agnes looked back and saw Lani following her closely, watching all her movements thoughtfully, whether Agnes was simply strolling the streets, attending a local gathering of extraordinary, or going to Fenerport's point of contact here to receive some news.
Lani wanted to draw some conclusions from her observations of herself, and Agnes knew this, and these conclusions would inevitably influence Lani's future choices.
"The difference is that you give up killing the person you were going to kill if you don't have to," Lani said at the end of Agnes's words, "like me." β
"No, it's not the difference," Agnes remembers replying, "the real difference is that I kill others as a means, and you kill others as your own end." β
"If you lose more by killing a person than you gain, then killing a person is something that is not worth doing."
"Can everyone you kill pass this trade-off?" Agnes remembers Lani asking.
"Every time." Agnes remembers replying.
Agnes pulled the door open, cutting out Lani's gaze.
"Mr. Chester." Agnes looked at some illusory figure sitting on a chair in the corner of the room at some point, and whispered.
"Good evening, Agnes." Mr. Chester's voice still had an illusory quality, and his eyes, full of bones and snowflakes, seemed to be painted merely on them.
"Your eyes ......," Agnes asked, hesitantly.
"Just a little price to pay for using extraordinary items." Mr. Chester said with a smile of comfort that was barely visible on his lips.
Agnes nodded, and instead of further questioning, she said, "Nightingale said you wanted to meet with me. β
"Yes, out of some selfishness," said Mr. Chester, whose face gradually withdrew the smile on his lips, "also out of some ...... Other factors. β
"What do you want to ask me, Mr. Chester?" Agnes asked softly.
"No, I'm not prepared to ask you anything," said Mr. Chester, in a negative voice, "I just want to meet you in general,"
"And......" Mr. Chester hesitated for a moment before continuing, "and ask you what to do next." β
"You're not going back to the Southern Continent for the time being?" Agnes raised her eyebrows and asked subconsciously.
Mr. Chester raised his hand and pointed to his eyes, a hint of helplessness in his voice.
"Your Highness wants me to wait for the effects to fade first."
Agnes looked up and looked carefully at the eyes that were as bony as snowflakes.
She raised her hand and shook it in front of Mr. Chester's eyes, and saw that Mr. Chester's head was turning with the movement of her hands, but his eyes did not move.
"Your eyes ......," Agnes said in the affirmative after a slight pause, "not really seeing what is in front of you right now. β
Mr. Chester shook his head, and raised his hand to the center of his eyes.
"I can see this," he said in a calm voice, "but I can't see everything in front of me." β
Agnes couldn't help but frown.
"It's not a permanent negative effect, it's going to fade after a long period of not activating that extraordinary item." Mr. Chester said.
Is it really that simple? Agnes looked at Mr. Chester's expression a little, but saw nothing but complete calm.
"Would you like to use this time to guide me?" Agnes asked instead, "I'm going to stay on Olawe Island for a while, and I've already found a suitable house, on the other side of the forest. β
Mr. Chester nodded slowly as Agnes spoke.
......
"We'll live here for two months." Agnes whispered, to Lani who was following her.
It's a cottage away from the port city, with a mossy brick faΓ§ade and a distinctly Rune style β bay windows, fireplaces, and carved mouldings. The house is not big, but it is rich in layers and not crowded, and even has a sense of sophistication and elegance. Agnes especially liked the loft room of the cottage, with its white accents and skylights on the sloping roof, which made the whole room look bright and cozy.
Agnes was originally just going to rent a house, but after coming here to see it, she couldn't help but buy it. The original owner of the house was ready to sell it, but unfortunately because the house was located in a remote place, he had to settle for the next best thing.
She casually placed the suitcase in her hand on the ground that had obviously been cleaned not long ago, and hung the gray plaid wide-brimmed hat on top of her head on the coat rack by the door.
"The man I hired has already cleaned the house," said Agnes, "but we will have to clean it ourselves." β
She smiled at Rani, "I haven't found a suitable housekeeper and servant yet. β
"You just said we're only here for two months." Lani said aloud.
"Oh, I'm just looking for someone who can help me look at the house after I'm gone." Agnes said with a shrug.
She casually leaned on the velvet sofa in the living room, looked at Lani, who was looking at the layout of the house, and said with a smile: "The attic room belongs to me, you can choose one of the two bedrooms on the second floor." β
"Okay, I'll check it out later." Lani nodded.
Agnes sat up straight, moved the vase from the coffee table to the center, and looked up at Lani, "By the way, one of my elders will be here a lot during this time. β
"Your elder?" Almost instantly, Lani cast her gaze on Agnes.
"His purpose is mainly to guide me......" Agnes nodded slightly, and said in a casual tone.
"He's your teacher?" Lani narrowed her eyes slightly.
Agnes didn't seem to hear Lani's words, and she didn't pause, "But he might be busy and won't be here for long." β
Lani looked at Agnes and nodded calmly.
