Chapter 3: The Pursuit
The commander who was bent on meritorious service had made up his mind, and the three soldiers had no choice but to suffer. Will was originally a poacher and had a knack for stealth tracking, and he quickly deduced the number and condition of the people on the other side - about ten people, both men and women, and children, presumably a wild man family.
The wild people are known as strong and ferocious in the impression of the inhabitants of the Seven Kingdoms, and in many places in the north they are even used by adults to scare children, but the night watchmen who often deal with them do not eat this set, and the people in black know very well that the so-called wild people are essentially just wild farmers who do not pay taxes and do not accept forced labor, and think that this is just a wild farmer called "free". It's a different story - believe it or not, the truth is: even in decline, the Night's Watch is one of the largest standing armies on the continent, to use a modern word, a "professional soldier."
In this era of feudal lords, the nobles who wanted to fight had to inform the vassals, who then gathered the soldiers, and the "soldiers" put down their hoes and took up their weapons, and the knights led them to assemble, and the army was formed.
The Night's Watch, on the other hand, are tasked with guarding the Great Wall, and are always at war, with supplies and food from the land-grants and donations from families in the Northβeven in the most peaceful times, the Night's Watch is not productive. Although the quality of the soldiers is a little worse, an army that drills every day after all, in this backward world, the short man is tall...... It's a crack soldier.
The Rangers, on the other hand, were the "soldiers" of this standing army, and compared to the "auxiliaries" such as craftsmen and clerks, they did not even do chores such as laundry and cooking, and their only activities were training and patrolling - compared to the wild men with sticks and stone axes who spent most of their time "surviving", the average combat effectiveness was more than one or two points. Aside from the fact that some of the best of a thousand savages "warriors" are few of the wildlings who dare to fight well-trained and well-equipped rangers when the disparity in numbers is small and there is no way to carry out an effective ambush.
At least the handful of Egger they're eyeing now don't dare.
The group of wildlings initially made a slow westward march along a route parallel to the Wall, noticing the pursuit of the four Rangers, and began to turn north and flee...... Weimar Royce led the patrol for the first time, and naturally he would not let go easily, and the two groups of people started a marathon in the ice and snow.
......
Egger and three other night watchmen kept their sights on the wildlings during the day and spent the night wrapped in heavy blankets to recuperate. With the advantage of having horses to ride, he firmly stuck to the enemy, first pursued north for three days, turned to the northwest, and then turned north after two days...... To's blessing from the storm and heavy snow never lost his goal.
"It's been nine days, my lord. β
"Nine days is a long time?"
"Soon. Gary replied without humility or arrogance: "But we only brought ten days of dry food, and even if we were careful we could only last twenty days." And we have to go back, if we continue to chase, the second half of the return trip ....... β
"I heard Sir Thorne say. Weimar said with a hint of sarcasm in his tone, "Last winter, the Rangers had a month's worth of supplies but held out outside the Great Wall for six months, how did they manage it?"
Will and Egger, who didn't interject on the side, glanced at each other and coughed a few times to hide their embarrassment: Weimar's irony may be quite powerful, but it's a pity that he chose the wrong person.
"If you want to know how, I've got you covered. Gary, who had long seen that this gentleman was unhappy, would certainly not let go of the opportunity to slap his face: "I participated in that operation, and after the food was eaten, we first ate horse meat and dog meat, then cut grass roots, dig rat nests, and hunt everything that could move, and in the end there was really nothing to eat, and the commander ordered us to bring the corpses of our brothers...... Fortunately, it didn't work in the end, and we braved the storm to reach the fortress of Custer, and made it back alive to the Great Wall with the help of the wild man who had his own daughter. β
"If the chief wants to try it, I can only promise to do everything I can to bring everyone home alive. The speaker looked at Weimar with a flustered expression and continued unceremoniously: "It's just that the commander-in-chief has reminded us that teams of less than ten people should not go to Custer for help, and grassroots and horse meat are not easy to digest. β
The young nobleman's face changed several times, and Egger thought that the youngest squad leader in the rangers would be annoyed, but in fact he quickly calmed down, and even miraculously made a concession: "Well, no matter what happens, we will turn around tomorrow and end the pursuit, but on this last day, we must take the initiative, try to capture one or two 'tongues' alive, whether it succeeds or not, and set off tomorrow to return." β
"Take the initiative?" Will couldn't continue watching the show, he became nervous: "But...... Lord Bunyan asked us to investigate the cause and movement of the wild man, but he didn't let us ......."
"What have you found out in these nine days?" Weimar interrupted the poacher, "it would be as convenient as catching a live savage for interrogation for another nine days, Gary, what do you think?"
Gary could argue with each other and taunt each other by virtue of his seniority and veteran status, but in the face of Weimar, who was both a nobleman and a prefect, he still couldn't disobey the order, pouting and reluctantly replied, "Listen to your lordship's orders." β
Weima smiled contemptuously, he liked to see others look at him unpleasantly but had to obey the feeling, he snorted coldly in his heart, turned his head to look at Will: "You, go to the front to investigate, report the specific situation when you come back, and then we will study and decide how to do it." β
The poacher gave Egg and Gary a grumpy look and took the order. The remaining three dismounted, and found a place to sit down and rest among the large trees.
......
Iger stood on a rock half-buried in the snow and began to look around, the weather was getting colder by the day, and this place was located hundreds of miles north of the Great Wall, geographically speaking, the temperature should indeed be lower...... But it wasn't the cold that disturbed him the most, it was the people.
Sir Weimar Royce, to be exact.
It's not that I'm afraid of him, although this young nobleman is a little pampered, but he can't do it with a clear conscience, except for being a little arrogant in his own identity, he hasn't done anything bad that makes people angry...... What Egger is afraid of is the plot related to this young man.
If he had known earlier that he would one day travel into this world, he would definitely have turned the TV series and the original book upside down and watched it a few times. But there are no assumptions in life, in the original world, whether it was watching dramas or reading the original book, he just browsed it casually, only roughly knew the plot of the story, and didn't remember any details at all.
But there is one plot he really can't forget, and that is - Weimar Royce, the unlucky guy who was hacked to death by the stranger at the beginning of the story of Ice and Fire. As the first named character to appear in a novel and TV series, his death reveals the true existence of the world's biggest villain, sets the tone of the plot, and is the most important "introduction".
But the conscience of heaven and earth, Egger, as a traverser, asked himself that even if he couldn't get promoted all the way to the pinnacle of life, he shouldn't be a foil to the story that died at the beginning! So, when he heard ten days ago that this patrol was going to be led by Sir Weimar Royce, his heart refused.
It's a pity - as a person who came to the Great Wall with a sin, he has neither the right to choose a chief, nor the right to refuse to attend normally, so he can only bite the bullet and go deep into the Ghost Forest again.
The cold wind in the north of the Great Wall never stops, blowing the shadows of the trees like hideous creatures, hence the name of this black wilderness. Egger still remembers the scene when he first went north to the Great Wall, when the memories of legends and plots suddenly flooded into his mind, and every shadow of the surrounding trees seemed to be a strange ghost standing solemnly waiting for a living person to take the bait, and every fish beam with a carved human face could startle him, and at the end of the first day of patrol, he was almost so weak that he could not stand when he dismounted, and now that he thinks about it, it is really enough.
Now, he has been out of the wall more than ten times, and he has met with the wild man two or three times, and he has long been fearless of the cold forest in front of him, which is known as a ghost.
But walking with Weimar once again activated the uneasiness hidden in his heart, and there seemed to be some inexplicable danger hidden in the dense shadows of the trees on all sides, making him feel as uneasy as an animal facing a natural enemy.
After going around the rest point, I didn't find any abnormal signs, and the chill and sense of crisis on my back may just be an illusion caused by Weimar's existence? If you think about it, this guy is not so unlucky that he will bump into a strange ghost with him on his first patrol...... When I return to the Wall this time, I will have to find a way to avoid the arrangement of patrolling with the Royce family's evil star.
Egg shook his head and returned to the other two, finding a place to sit under their strange gazes, and quietly waiting for Will to return.
......
The cold wind was blowing, the horses were moving and snorting in place, and Egger kept paying attention to the sounds of his surroundings without letting his guard down, and thought of ways to avoid walking with Weimar and breaking away from the Night's Watch, and after about an hour, Will returned.
"Huh?" said Weimar, looking up at the poacher with an inquiring gaze, in his characteristic haughty, nonchalant tone, "and it will soon be dark, and the wildlings must have stopped and started camping." β
Will turned over and dismounted, walked to the three of them in a daze, swallowed his saliva, and looked distracted: "I know you won't believe it...... But I don't know what's going on...... Savages, all dead. β
