Chapter 55: The Ice Queen (Part I)

The city of Kislev, when Rhodes arrived here in the dust, it was dusk. The sky took on a golden hue, and the glow of the sun shone through the clouds on this magnificent city.

The view in front of you is not that the whole city is surrounded by snow and ice, as the legend says, but on the contrary, its outer walls and buildings are made of ordinary stones.

It was a large city built on a plain, with gates on all sides, and the main gate was two stories high, with a statue of the bear god carved on it, and people passed under the gate as if they were passing under the feet of giants.

Behind the huge city walls were built towers, large watchtowers, on which heavy ballistas were mounted. Dressed in iron chain mail, the guards stood solemnly on both sides of the city gate, their brown eyes scrutinizing everyone who entered and left the city.

Rod and Lawrence dismounted and entered through the main entrance. The straight Tsar's Avenue leads to the Bandaga Palace, flanked by two- to three-storey residential buildings, with important civic buildings scattered in various parts of the city, and monumental towers standing in all corners of the city. There is a large fountain in the center of the city square, and a circular corridor surrounds the entire square, which is the municipal residence of the city of Kislev.

The Winter Garden, located at the back of the Municipal Square, is said to contain more than two dozen ice fountains, and is a favorite place for the Frost Witches. Tall firs obscured the view, preventing Rhodes from getting a glimpse of the panorama inside.

After announcing his identity, the guards led Rhodes on his way, through the bustling streets, temples, winter gardens, and municipal residences, and finally stopped in front of the Roblesman Hotel.

"Your Excellency, you can rest here tonight, and the Queen will summon you early tomorrow morning. ”

The squire left, leaving Rod and Lawrence to stay at the inn.

Unlike the buildings of the Empire, the buildings of Kislev are mostly decorated with elaborate carvings, with domes domes on the roofs, and paintings on the interiors of important religious buildings, which appear sacred and ornate. These large buildings usually occupy a large area, and the base is so large that it almost reaches the size of a square.

By the time I entered the hotel room, it was already getting dark. Unlike southern cities, northern cities are usually quiet early in the night, and when night comes, the streets are far less crowded and the wide, straight avenues are only sporadic with passers-by. The whole city was silent at night. Lawrence and Rhodes talk about the towns in the South, and after nightfall, it's time for people to rest and drink after their work.

This is not the case with Kislev. Because it is located at the northeastern tip of the continent, the temperature at night is much cooler than during the day. Except for a few taverns filled with the smell of vodka and sweat, everywhere else, there was silence. The ice fountain in the winter garden emits bursts of cold air, and wisps of white smoke can be seen even on a cold night.

Rod was a little distraught. It's not that I'm going to see Queen Caterina tomorrow, but that I'm worried about my daughter Dennis, and I don't know if I'll be able to see her again. He had wanted to get more information from the palace attendant, but the chamberlain seemed unsmiling and silent on any issues, and he simply led Rhodes to the hotel and retreated. Before leaving, Rhodes noticed that there were two more Kremer guards at the entrance of the hotel where he was staying.

Although it is only two guards, this team is not simple, it is a personal guard responsible for defending the palace and the queen herself, and the combat effectiveness is very strong, and two can top a dozen ...... Although she has not yet dealt with the "beautiful and intelligent" Ice Queen, judging from a series of actions, Katerina does not have much affection for herself. Rod already felt it.

The night crow let out a few terrible wails and flapped its wings away. On the comfortable velvet mattress, Rod fell asleep.

When I woke up the next day, the two Krem guards were already standing in the doorway.

For a moment Rhodes felt as if he was being watched, and with the guidance of the guards, he arrived at the Bandaga Palace in the center of the city in the early morning. A terrible burst of cold air rushed in front of him, and the legendary ice city wall was right in front of him. Yesterday evening, Rhodes couldn't see anything outside the palace because of the distance. I could only vaguely see the towering golden dome, and today, when I stood outside the palace myself, I could see the wall clearly. It's made of ice. It surrounds the entire royal palace, like a winter palace in a fairy tale.

Lawrence was denied entry, and he had to wait outside the palace, while Rhodes wrapped his cloak tightly and walked with the two guards into the solemn temple of ice.

The Tsar's Avenue leads all the way to the main hall of the Royal Palace. The further you go inside, the cooler it gets, and unlike the cold climate of the North, the drop in temperature here is entirely due to magic. The palace looked like an ice cave, and Rhodes guessed that the queen had done it on purpose to assert her authority.

The unnatural snowflakes fell on Rod's shoulders, and he should have felt cold, but the warm blood was flowing through his body, so he couldn't feel the cold at all. The guards on either side wore thick clothing and armor, like a ball of cotton.

Finally, after walking through the long corridors and avenues, Rhodes was taken by the guards to the main hall of the Bandaga Palace, where the Ice Queen discussed politics and judged the prisoners.

I guess I'm a criminal, Rhodes thought to himself, stepping on the floor of the main hall.

The cold air was like a ghost, and in the main hall of Bandagah, more than a dozen huge icicles spread out in front of him, supporting the entire hall. The Ice Queen sat at the end of the icicle, looking as cold as a statue.

Despite being unshackled, Rhodes knew that he was now a prisoner.

He kept walking, and the hall was flanked by huge beast statues, some of which Rhodes recognized, some of which he didn't, such as the huge dragon head and the bust of the saber-toothed tiger, and others that Rhodes didn't. But without exception, they all stared at Rhodes like living creatures. This sense of oppression may have been shocked by commoners or ordinary aristocrats. But Rod was still on his feet.

Soon, Rhodes walked in front of Caterina, the Ice Queen.

This was the first time Rhodes had seen the Ice Queen, and to Rhodes' surprise, Caterina was as cold as an ice sculpture as the legend had been. Her face was very white, but not naturally white, but a sickly white, pale and bloodless. Her skin was the same, like a cold stone that had been sleeping in the Winter Palace for a thousand years, and there was no blood on it. If it weren't for the Queen's voice, Rhodes would have wondered if it was a real thing, or was it just an ice sculpture?
