Chapter 45: The Dark Abyss
(More details are being added recently, so I hope you can give suggestions)
Jack helped Coren get to the bottom of the pool, which was dark when the torches weren't lit, but there was no smell of rot except for the residual smell of mud.
After the two soldiers had drawn the rope back, they did as Coren had commanded, and stood at the mouth of the pool, waiting for the next order, so that they could pick them up again if they were dead end.
After all seventeen people had descended to the bottom of the pool, the light of the fire quickly illuminated the dark passage.
Jack and Tex still lead the way, both tied a few loops of rope around their waists. Luthor and Koren followed, the soldiers at the rear, scouting around.
Jack held a torch and led everyone on this rugged path, he actually had a question that he couldn't understand, this place, obviously there is no food and no light, why did those sea beasts choose here? How good is it in the canyon, there is sunshine and rain.
After walking for about two or three hundred meters, Jack's eyes widened.
Everywhere the fire went, the roof of the cave reflected the light brightly, on the ground, on the walls, and everywhere, at first glance it was thought to be stars, but Tex had told him before that it was actually a small crystal on a stalactite formed by the reaction of limestone with the surrounding environment, and the ancients even regarded crystals, which have no other use than ornamental as treasures. Jack had never seen such a scene, and in the bright light, he felt like he was in the starry sky!
But in this mountainous and cave-rich country, except for Jack, everyone else finds it commonplace and quite unexpected. What they cared about was what the cave was telling them.
The group slowly paced down the wet ground, with a small downhill in front of it, and the road here was smooth and steep because of the perennial dripping water, and the slightest mistake would make it a fall.
"There is the sound of water flowing ahead". Turks heard the sound of running water.
"Watch out for your step, there's an abyss on the right. As soon as Jack reminded them, everyone knew that there was a dark bottomless pit on their right, only a foot away!
Everyone walked a little to the left and held on to the stalagmites growing on the side of the road. If it weren't for Turks' explanation, Jack would have thought that the stalagmites were living creatures, because their form was too much like a bamboo shoot about to sprout and grow.
"Will the stalactites on top of his head fall?" asked Jack as he walked along the path.
Holding up the torch, Turks lit up the colorful stalactites hanging all over the top and replied, "I don't think they will fall off, but their color will change with the increase in temperature, and I can't explain it, maybe it's a miracle of nature."
After thinking about it, Jack still didn't ask, just let it be as if it didn't exist, no matter how much surprise there was.
The slight wind is still blowing in my ears, and judging from this wind direction, further ahead, you should see the air outlet - that is, the exit. I don't know what will be at the exit.
After passing another stone pillar covered with blue-green water streaks, a little light finally appeared in front of the right, but this bright light appeared on the top of the cave, looking at Jack and them from a distance dozens of meters high.
Seeing that there was no other exit, everyone couldn't help but become anxious.
"How can this be?" the sound of water kept ringing in his ears, but Coren's sorrow slowly hit: "Another dead end?"
Jack couldn't understand why the mountainous terrain here was so strange, either an abyss or a cave, and such a place could only be obtained from a swamp.
Luthor took the torch and looked around, the stalactites on both sides glittered and beautiful in the light of the fire, but it was certain that the place they had just come from seemed to be the only entrance, or exit, as far as the eye could see.
"There seems to be nothing in this place but water and stones," Luthor said.
The location of the cave was about a kilometer behind the swamp, and Jack remembered that there was a high mountain over there, which meant that there was a mountain about three meters above their heads now, and the peaks in the canyon were relatively steep, so it seemed very unrealistic for them to turn around now and start looking for the traces of the beasts from the mountain.
Looking at the helpless crowd, Jack said, "Perhaps, we can look in this cave again, maybe just like the last time, we will find a quagmire or something that can take us to the next place?"
Turks nodded, and said in agreement with Jack, "Well, Jack is right, since there is a flow of water, there must be other exits. ”
Coren thought for a moment and thought that this was the case, so the group began to follow the sound again to find water.
There is no road ahead, so they have to go forward, maybe there will be other roads on the left side that they didn't take just now.
Sure enough, on the way back, there was a particularly damp road that led to the dark depths of the cave. Since there is no way out, it is better to continue to explore.
Everyone supported each other, one step at a time against the wall, walking cautiously to prevent them from falling into the abyss.
It's a downhill slope of just over 60 degrees, and if you're not careful, you'll slide all the way down the trail, and if you're unlucky, you'll fall off the trail, which is less than two meters wide. The result is certainly unimaginable.
Luckily, after about a hundred meters down, the water was getting louder and louder, and they were on the right track.
"Be careful, it's almost there. Turks reminded.
Coren walked tremblingly, supported by Luthor and the soldiers.
"If I had been younger, Tex, I would have gone faster than you. Coren joked.
Turks didn't look back, laughed and said, "Father, I know, you will always be my idol." ”
Coren laughed too.
Ahead is where the water flows.
It was a stream about a meter wide, running from north to south on the path from which they came.
Turks walked over, put his hand into the stream, and said, "Judging by the depth and direction of this creek, it flows out of the canyon, very slowly, and you can reach out to the end." It looks like the end won't be an exit," he said, turning his head and reluctantly telling Cologne, then shining his torch closer and pointing to the small outlet not far away.
Although he was very reluctant to believe it, Coren still sighed and asked, "It seems that it is another dead end." ”
Unbeknownst to them, Luthor patted Coren and pointed to the abyss behind them in the darkness and said, "No, this water is flowing downwards." ”
Everyone gathered their torches together, trying to illuminate the abyss behind them, but the abyss was still pitch black.
"It seems that yes, you listen, it seems that this is the sound of the water that we hear below. Turks also said.
Everyone listened carefully, and the sound of gurgling water was endless, not at all like it came from a "minor" stream.
What can be concluded is that the real exit is still underneath!
