Chapter Sixty-Eight: The Actor
"Oh, Shuqing, my friend. You're finally here. This was the first thing Mrs. An said when she saw Shuqing. "Hey, don't be embarrassed. That was the second thing she said.
Shuqing slowly sat down on her delicate sofa, her hands on her lap. Mother Xu came over with tea, she looked at Shuqing cautiously, with hostility in her eyes, lest she suddenly lead to something crazy. Shuqing nodded at her and raised the corners of her mouth.
"I'm sorry. Shuqing said, "I think Chen--virtuous-" She originally wanted to say Sister Chen.
But before she could finish speaking, Mrs. Ann raised her right hand and motioned for her to stop.
"Oh-dear, I don't want to talk about her. She said.
Shuqing smiled, picked up the teacup and took a sip of water.
"How are you doing?"
"Well, yes, I went to Shanghai. Wandering around a bit. Nothing new. β
"I've always wanted to go to Shanghai, but I didn't, my nephew doesn't like Shanghainese. β
"Maybe next time we can go together. β
Shuqing couldn't think of anything else to talk to her. In fact, she never thought of anything she could talk about but memories.
For the rest of the afternoon, they barely talked about anything other than reminiscing about the past, and Mother Xu kept shuttling back and forth between them, adding water to the teapot for a while, and wiping the tea table with a rag for a while. Although Mrs. Ann tried her best to appear pleasant, the atmosphere was still gloomy and eerie. However, when Mama Xu took the teapot from them again, Shuqing called out to her.
"Mother Xuβ" she shouted at Mother Xu.
"What do you need?" she asked indifferently.
"Uh-I think-I think-I should apologize to you. β
"Apologize?
"Yes, I know I got you in trouble that day. I'm sorry. β
"If you know how Miss messes around in this house, you know how much trouble you're getting into, you-. Mother Xu was furious.
"Mother Xuβthat's enough!" said Mrs. Ann, "don't forget who you are." β
"Xiaowen, don't say that. I'm no different from Mama Xu. Shuqing waved her hand, not wanting to cause any more unpleasantness.
Mother Xu glanced at Shuqing and was not grateful to her for speaking for her, "She is very good at being a person, but I don't think she is a good person." She said, and left indifferently with the tea.
"I've always seen Mama Xu as my family, and sometimes she may feel that she is really part of this family. Mrs. Ann said, shaking her head.
"Isn't that so?" Shuqing meant.
"Oh, yes, of course. She helped me take care of Xin'er, took care of me, and spent many lonely days with me. β
Shuqing played with the teacup and stopped talking.
"What's on your mind?" Mrs. An saw Shuqing's hesitation.
"Oh, oh, I don't know what to tell you. Shuqing said, she put down the teacup, "I feel like an unqualified friend, and I always have no way to comfort you when you are in trouble." I-"
"Don't say that, you're good!"
"I hid Anna's thing from you. Shuqing said, she looked down at the tea cup on the table, but her eyes glanced up at Mrs. An, and her hand holding the tea cup trembled. "I actually always knew where she was?"
"Oh-oh-oh!" Mrs. Ann's eyes widened in surprise, "you shouldn't lie to me. Where is she?"
She was sent to an insane asylum by Zhou Zhiwen, to be exact, Zhou Zhiwen's wife. She often beat her. Listen, at the time I thought it was safer for her to stay at home than in a madhouse, at least no one would beat her again. β
"Didn't you think I'd bring her back?"
"Sorry, no, you just want to make sure she's doing well. And I think she's better than at home. Chen--Oh, Chen Xianhui took good care of her. Excuse me. β
"How do you think it's a good thing to be locked up in an insane asylum?" Mrs. Ann said sharply, "Also, please don't mention Chen Xianhui to me again." β
"For her, yes. Shuqing said, clearing her throat, "She looks good there." β
"Look, oh my God, look. Mrs. Ann stood up and paced up and down the room restlessly. "And how is she now? She looks good now? What will become of a person who has been in an insane asylum for twenty years? Hell! Looks good? Uh-"
Shuqing also stood up, she began to regret telling An Xiaowen these things, but now she has to send it, if An Xiaowen is really as Chen Xianhui said, she would have known that Anna was in the madhouse-
"She's dead!"
