Chapter Twenty-Three: Eerie and Quiet
Chapter 23 is gloomy and quiet
In front of the Lord's Palace, there was a rather large square, where the sword test that turned into a disaster was held.
The flags of various colors hung during the ceremony have been somewhat damaged after so many days of wind and sun, but they are still tenaciously hung on the flagpole, and they are hunted by the cold wind of the night.
Although the corpses of the survivors who fought for their lives here are long gone, the blood stains left by the fierce battle are still imprinted on the ground, and the dark red color almost stains the square in front of the lord's mansion.
Through the scars of the broken sword all over the ground, Minoan and the others could vaguely see how hard the survivors had fought to get out of this enemy-filled square at great cost.
Each pool of dark red blood represents the death of a warrior who once fought here.
A night breeze blew, causing a sudden whining sound in the square, like the murmur of a ghost in the night.
Coupled with the reflection of the corpses of the living dead scattered everywhere after the battle with Mino, it was really a bit terrifying in this dark night, and in such an environment, even the originally solid and majestic City Lord's Mansion seemed to become eerie and terrifying.
Swallowing a mouthful of saliva with difficulty, Mino subconsciously looked back, wanting to gain courage from his companions, only to find that everyone's faces were dark or shallow with a look of fear.
Obviously, there are more than one or two people who are frightened by this environment.
But no matter how scared you are, you still have to do what you need to do, and if you can't solve the source of this disaster, the sacrifices of those companions and everyone's hard work tonight will be useless.
So everyone subconsciously got closer, and after relying on the number of people to gain some confidence, they walked towards the lord's mansion where Memphis was located.
Unlike most of the humble houses in the town, the Lord's Mansion where the great merchant of Memphis lived was made of the finest Black Rock rock, and apart from the shape, it was not much different in height and size from the nobles' favorite castle.
So when they looked at it from a distance, it was okay, and when Minoan and the others really walked to the gate of the lord's mansion, they really realized the height of this building.
Looking at the bloodstained gate, and remembering the horror stories he had heard about the castle as a child, Minow's heart filled with an unspeakable sense of danger.
But there was no turning back from the bow, and from the moment the counteroffensive plan began to be executed, there was no turning back, and if they couldn't seize that glimmer of hope this time, everyone would have only a dead end.
So even though he clearly sensed the danger, Mino still pushed the door in front of him open.
With a creaking sound, the tall gate of the two men burst open, and the black doorway was like the grown mouth of a fierce beast, about to devour everyone in the vanguard.
This atmosphere of fear and depression is really bad, if you don't want to solve it, I'm afraid that a black cat that suddenly sprang out can scare everyone into screaming, if you really let the screams sound, most of everyone's caution along the way will be useless.
This alone is unacceptable, not to mention the reduction of the combat power that follows in this state of fear, so even though he knew the danger, Mino still walked at the front of the team without hesitation.
A milky white ball of light was lifted by Mino, illuminating the dark road ahead, although the practical use was almost none, but the change of mood in that bright environment had an immediate effect.
Because compared to the dark, the unknown is the most frightening thing.
Although the Lord's Mansion looks gloomy and terrifying due to the dual effects of environment and psychology, it is actually very different from what everyone expected.
Aside from Mino's uninvited vanguards, there was not a single creature in the Lord's Mansion, let alone the powerful living dead that Mino, who they thought might appear in large numbers.
If it weren't for the mess and the dark red blood spilled everywhere, Mino would have thought he was being invited to visit a nobleman's house.
This situation made everyone more and more vigilant after secretly breathing a sigh of relief.
Because in such a scene, silence is the greatest anomaly.
Even Mino, the least adventurous, knew what danger it meant to be unusually quiet in an area associated with the devil.
And the longer the silence lasts, the more uneasy and depressing people feel, and everyone even wants to jump out of a monster to fight with them immediately, rather than continue this damn depression.
No matter what thoughts he had, the Vanguard's serene exploration continued, and as one messy room after another was kicked open, looking at the interior of the room that was nothing but dirt and blood, Mino's sense of crisis grew stronger.
If at the beginning, it can be said that the previous concealment work was too good to be discovered, with the sound of the door kicking one after another, in such a quiet environment where you can even hear the sound of heartbeat and breathing, unless Memphis is not vigilant at all, he should be aware of the existence of the intruder.
But Mino's exploration of the same single plane copy is still the same, not to mention the target of this trip, Memphis, not even a single living dead can be seen everywhere outside.
It's just weird.
Coupled with those inexplicably bloodstained rooms, how to look at it makes people feel that there is a conspiracy.
But what is this conspiracy?
As Mino continued to follow the group, he began to ponder the question.
First of all, it is absolutely impossible to be a trap ambush, with the strength of Memphis at least level six, it is really not difficult to completely annihilate this vanguard team with only the highest captain Hunn, a level five, where is there any need for such a thankless act as ambush.
Could it be that Memphis isn't here at all?
As soon as this thought came to him, he was thrown into the garbage heap by Mino, shaking his head.
Leaving aside the promises of Old Man Cottma and the results of the last failed counteroffensive plan, the clutter and blood stains in this room alone are enough proof of Memphis's existence.
You must know that the strangulation of the survivors by the living dead took place in the square outside, and the survivors who escaped by luck were caught in the door before they chose to flee to Memphis's lair, if Memphis had not returned, how could these rooms be stained with blood everywhere.
Could it be that Memphis is doing something important, and he is so engrossed that he doesn't notice it, or can't distract himself or others?
But in that case, even if Memphis doesn't arrange a bunch of living dead to guard it, magic traps or something should come to a dozen.
A guy who could plot a plot to sacrifice the entire Sword Furnace Town to a demon would not even think of such a thing as setting traps and garrisons in advance?
What was causing the current situation, Mino, pondered until a blood-colored symbol distorted to the point of almost distortion came into view, and with the idea of sacrificing demons earlier, the name of a sacrificial ritual called Flesh Harvest suddenly appeared in Mino's head.
At the moment when this sacrificial ritual was remembered, Mino's eyes suddenly widened, and he leaned directly on the wall and searched carefully.
With the discovery of one distorted rune after another of bloodstains, Mino's understanding of the room full of abnormal bloodstains, the inexplicable emptiness of the Lord's Mansion, and the abnormal behavior of Memphis all along.
"Run!"
The moment he understood what it had all done, Mino screamed almost without thinking, and the sound was so poignant that it drowned out the sound of huge footsteps that should have caught everyone's attention.
"What the hell is going on? Why are you running?"
Although Mino was panicked and eager, his temporary teammates were not Phil, who cooperated with him tacitly, and there was no way to understand Mino's thoughts in an instant, so even if he knew that Mino must have some reason for doing this, he still had to ask why.
Especially in this case where Mino's sudden screaming destroys the stealth state that everyone has been trying to maintain after suddenly doing some inexplicable behavior.
Looking at the puzzled and slightly reproachful eyes of his companions, Mino genuinely misses Phil.
But he also knew that this was not to blame these pioneers, everyone had been teaming up together for less than half a day, although they had experienced a battle of life and death, but it was still a little bit short of time to say that the tacit understanding was still a little bit worse, so he just forcibly guided everyone to retreat while opening his mouth to explain the reason.
But no sooner had everyone opened their legs, and before Mino could say the first word, the sound of huge footsteps, which had been hidden by his screams, finally reached everyone's ears.
Hearing the sound of something like a heavy object falling to the ground, Mino's eyes suddenly widened, and a faint look of despair appeared in his eyes.
