Chapter 3: The Town

Oliver was in a bad mood, and as one of Kugil's guards, he was hiding in a wooden house by the town's gates, mending the boredom of the night. To tell the truth, it is extremely painful for a person to be on duty, but by chance, it was pouring rain on the day he was on duty. The rain rained from day to night, and now it seems that there is no intention of stopping.

"What the hell is ......," Oliver untied his damp cloak and dried it by the fireplace, then wiped a few handfuls of his rain-stained cheeks and whispered a whin, as if to vent his frustration with his bad luck. He had just run out and opened the gate of the town, and put a caravan full of goods into the town, for the sake of the Lord God, I don't know how many times it was tonight, and what was even more annoying was that I didn't know how many such uninvited guests there were.

It doesn't rain much in the town of Kugir, but when it does, it's a complete disaster. Because there are too many merchant teams going back and forth between the White Oak Province and the Western Province, it is okay in normal times, but it is just crowded and noisy. But on a rainy day, well, the whole town will be completely transformed into a muddy pond mixed with the smell of livestock manure, especially around the town gates, and the mud that has been ravaged thousands of times will have the illusion of stepping into the mud as soon as you walk up, enough to make people want to kill.

"I hope that Raun kid is busier than I am, hehe......" Oliver guessed viciously as he sat by the fireplace with his cup in his cup, sipping amber mead. The Raun he called him was another unlucky guy on duty tonight, but at the west gate on the other side of town.

A few sips of thick mead poured into his stomach, and the warmth that gradually rose in his stomach and intestines made Oliver exhale comfortably. "Come over and let me sleep comfortably. He seemed to think of something else, his rough palms unconsciously rubbing the stubble on his chin, "I haven't seen her in a long time, tsk, she's good at everything, it's just too expensive...... and rubbed it the crotch of his pants.

Just then, a series of rapid slapping sounds sounded at the gate of the town outside the house, interrupting Oliver's imaginary sensuality, and a surge of anger stained his cheeks. "Hell, it's endless, you damned misers, you can't be quiet for a while when it's raining......" he said, kicking open the wooden door angrily, only to realize that he had forgotten his cloak to protect him from the rain, and then turned and put on it, and rushed out with the oil lamp.

The rain seemed to be heavier than it had just been, and the slapping continued, and Oliver exclaimed, "Stop knocking! Hell, no one is deaf!"

He wanted to keep these damn guys in the rain all night and never want to get into the town of Kugil. But the thought of the methods of the "mad dog"-like sheriff, Lord Gadore, immediately made him shiver. I don't know what happened in the last few days, but the sheriff's mood was unusually irritable, and several unlucky guys had already bumped into his hands and been whipped to the point of cracking flesh.

As the small window on the door was pushed open, Oliver was greeted by two figures on horseback, wrapped in cloaks. "Identify yourself!" Oliver asked aloud for a moment, but still businesslike.

"We are cultivators from the province of Tanbang, and if we want to go to the Western Province, please open the door, we have no ill will. One of them replied, his voice was gentle, but with an innate dignity.

Oliver's eyes lit up, he had already developed a pair of transparent eyes after being on duty at the town gate all year round. He can distinguish the authenticity of the other party's identity at the first time, for these two uninvited guests, whether it is a sturdy war horse or a brass fastener on the bridle head, they are unlikely to be liars who travel all over the world.

Anyone knows that most of the "cultivators" who can travel in the kingdom are students in the Knight Academy, not to mention their family backgrounds, and they are likely to be nobles, coupled with the tone of the other party, Oliver is convinced of his judgment. So, almost instantly, he changed into a smile that couldn't have been kinder, as if by juggling, and several yellowed teeth appeared in his grinning lips.

"Wait, distinguished gentlemen, I will open the door to you at once. Oliver said, quickly closing the small window and pulling open the gates of Kugir Town.

Oliver did not guess wrong, these two people are indeed nobles, if the real crown prince and the son of the royal duke are not nobles, then there is no nobleman in the whole kingdom.

Naturally, on horseback were Sovereign and Paislin, who had fled all the way here, and they didn't want to enter the town of Kugil, after all, this is one of the famous cities of the Orem Kingdom, and the slightest mistake will put them in an extremely dangerous situation. However, a scouting around the town of Kugir resulted in the two of them giving up on their plans to bypass the town altogether.

Not only them, but anyone who wants to bypass Kugill will find out how unrealistic this idea is. The rolling hills on the western edge of White Oak Province turn sharply here, forming a complex canyon landscape, also known as the "Echo Canyon".

The town of Kugir was built on a gentle terrain with artificially cleared a path to the bottom of the canyon. Walking inside Echo Canyon, you'll find the blue sky overhead sandwiched between weathered rocks, revealing only a narrow strip. Heading south from Echo Canyon will bring you to Lone Rock City, the northern gateway to the Western Province. If you continue all the way west, you won't want to know about that place.

In other words, if you want to get around Kugil, you have no choice but to jump off the top of the canyon, and of course, at your own risk. So, for a combination of reasons, it's no surprise that this choke-point town can be so thriving.

As the light of the town revealed little by little in the rain, the gates of the town of Kugir were opened. Although they knew the danger that might happen here, the light of the fire in those houses also made them feel a long-lost warmth for those who had been fleeing, it was the power of delicious food and soft beds.

"Thanks," said Paislin, to the gatekeeper next to him, "if you may, can you tell me where you can find a soft bed? As you can see, this damn rain has tormented us to the ground......

"The Goat Inn, my dear sir," replied Oliver, carrying the lamp, respectfully, not caring for the rain on his thin cloak, as he had always been so upright. "Walking along the main road, there are carved goats hanging on the side of the road, and I promise, you will not be disappointed. His answer was short and crisp, for he knew how to speak in order to win the favor of the nobles.

"You've done me a great favor......," said Peslin, and raised his hand lightly on horseback.

Sure enough, Oliver's long-awaited reward arrived, and several gold shiny coins rolled and flew towards him in the rain. "Praise you for your generosity......" he scrambled to catch two, then immediately bent down and went to the muddy mud to pick up the rest of the gold coins.

By the time he looked up, Sovereign and Paislin had gone a long way. Looking at their backs as they faded away, Oliver bit the gold coins fiercely in turn, and sure enough, they were not liars. "Nasha's Ecstasy, it's a ...... now," he licked his lips, as if savoring the slippery taste of a woman, "No, to hell with her...... I should have changed to a better one, tsk tsk......"

It didn't take long for them to find the "Leaping Goat Hotel" along the main road, and as the gatekeeper said, a lifelike carved wooden goat hung under the eaves of the hotel's entrance, and no one who walked by would have turned a blind eye to the striking sign.

The heat-covered glass windows were filled with the chaotic figures of the drinkers, and the faint sound of the piano mixed with the faint shouting of the piano was faintly heard through the wooden door panels into the street, and it was unclear whether the inn was the most comfortable, but it was lively enough.

Sovereign tethered his horse, glanced at Peslin, and pushed open the wooden door of the inn. Suddenly, a loud noise mixed with heat, like a crazy wave in the sea, smashed hard in the face. The bright space is filled with the smell of food and sweat, hoarse singing, lively conversation, and the sound of a piano that is completely out of tune.

But the huddled together seemed unconcerned, singing aloud to the tune of the lyre, slapping the table top with food scraps, wrapping their arms around each other's shoulders and slamming their glasses into their hands, letting the amber liquid sway and spill onto the greasy floor.

Sovereign and Paislin stood in the doorway, somewhat dazed, as if they didn't know how to deal with such a scene in their experience. But soon, a man with a wine glass and who looked like he was drunk staggered over and solved their embarrassment.

"Welcome! Welcome to ...... "The Goat Hotel," the man roared loudly, clutching Soveland's wrist tightly, his beard dripping with unpolished wine, "here...... It's definitely the best hotel in Kugil!I mean the best!" he took a sip of mead, pointed his glass at the noisy crowd, and said, "I'm Riley 'Old Goat'! Say, young lad, what do you want? food, beds, drinks, or women?hahaha...... Swear to the Lord God, as long as you can afford it, I will give it to you!"

Sovereign smiled wryly and looked at Peslin, apparently they were overwhelmed by such "enthusiasm". "We needed a clean room, two comfortable beds and that's it. He shouted at Riley, shoving him a few gold coins.

Stimulated by the gold coin, Riley's eyes of the old goat finally cleared up a lot. "Do you mean comfort without bed bugs and fleas?" hahaha...... laughed and said, "no problem! I'll give you a clean room as long as the gold is real!" and then he looked up and shouted to one of the girls in the crowd, "Nancy, my little darling, find a place for these two boys!

Soon, led by the girl named Nancy, Sovereign and Paislin finally sat down in the corner of the hotel. It wasn't long before the tantalizing aroma of stew and fresh toast was placed in front of them. Truth be told, the two of them were starving, and after a few days of only wild fruits and grilled fish, they finally regained their sense of life in the hot food, and even ate a taste of happiness.

The only thing they don't know is that since the moment they stepped into the Leaphorn Goat Hotel, they have been watched by many people......
