Chapter 13: Crisis
The sudden exclamation was not far from the clearing where Sawylan was, and after a little discernment, he ran towards the place where the sound had come from.
In fact, the moment he heard the call, Soviran knew the identity of the other party, and after living together in an academy for four years, even if he didn't have any friendship, he was afraid that he would remember the other party's voice. What's more, the owner of the voice often appears in his own life.
Sovereign pursed his lips with a wry smile as he ran away from the branches of the trees. To be honest, the other party is really not his friend, and there are even some small frictions from time to time, but after the strange incident just now, even if Yusta, whom he hates the most, suddenly appears, he will show a happy smile.
After all, no matter how annoying the guy is, it's much better than a weird illusion, at least you don't have to worry about being driven crazy in the next second.
The clearer and clearer shouts were mixed with the crash of swords against hard objects coming from ahead, and what was even stranger was that in the midst of these noises, there were some muffled roars that had never been heard before.
Picking away the last bit of the branch and leaf that obscured his vision, when Sovelan saw the scene not far away, the blood in his body seemed to flow backwards to his brain in an instant, and an indescribable shock fixed him on the spot.
Dennis, who had just fought with him in the pride of the oak a few days ago, was half-lying on the ground, wielding his long sword and struggling to move backwards, his left leg seemingly battering with his body. Opposite, a fairy tale creature is waving its branches, roaring and unleashing round after round of attacks.
The small canopy, the moss-covered body, the long, narrow bright green eyes, the sawdust that erupted from the large mouth that opened and closed on the torso, and the rattan that whipped and waved in the air. This image from the nightmares of many children has thus come to life, and in the ballad of the troubadour, it has a romantic name - the Dryad.
Dennis's situation became more and more dangerous, and rattans like long whips penetrated his defenses everywhere, and the already not too heavy leather armor was covered with cracks, and blood even spilled in some serious places.
There was a snap, and a bloody streak appeared on the back of Dennis's hand, and the sword in his hand fell to the ground. When the rattan struck again, he laughed miserably and muttered a few words, and with a reluctant face, he took out the Shelter Stone from his bag that he had received before the trial.
At this moment, an agile figure rushed out of the jungle next to it, and the silver-white sword light slashed through the speeding rattans, and in the painful roar of the dryad, the figure fell to the ground along with the severed rattans. Then, the other man stood up and stood in front of Dennis.
Dennis was stunned for a moment, and then turned to the ecstasy of escaping death. "Why are you?" he asked, surprised.
"Lord God, you're such a nuisance," Soveran said, staring at the dryad, feigning dissatisfaction, "What's wrong with me?"
"No, no, no!" Dennis scratched his head a little embarrassed, and immediately changed his words, "In my eyes, you have never been so cute as you are today!
Standing in the distance, the dryad didn't give them time to make small talk, and it moved its unusually heavy body, and suddenly flung its arm-like branches towards Soveland, and several rattans flew over.
The long sword swung in the air, and the broken branches and leaves and severed green vines fell one after another beside Sovilan, although the strength of the dryad's attack was not much heavier than the long sword in the instructor's hand, but the rhythm was significantly faster. The rattans that stretched out from the dryad's body seemed to have eyes, constantly searching for loopholes in Soveland's defenses, and if they weren't paying attention, they would take advantage of the weakness and whip it.
The battle was in a delicate stalemate, but it was the last thing Sovelan wanted, he had never imagined that he could physically exhaust a Dryad, which was completely unrealistic. But the dryad on the opposite side grasped this point, and in this way, Sovereign, who was guarding in front of Dennis, was trapped on the spot, not daring to leave half a step. If this continued, the moment when Solveland's physical strength was exhausted would be the moment when the two of them had to crush the Stone of Refuge and choose to abstain.
"Hurry up, Dennis!" shouted Soveland, if Dennis was able to escape, then the passive defensive posture would at least be somewhat improved, and it might not be impossible to wait for an opportunity to take him down.
Dennis also saw what was wrong, and he struggled to pick up his sword and get up from the ground. "I know! Hell, what about you?!"
"You go first, run as far as you can!" Soveran furrowed his brow, he could clearly feel the dryad's attack faster. "Leave me alone, don't be distracted to take care of you, I have a chance to kill it!"
"Be careful!" Dennis suddenly yelled as he looked at the dryad in the distance.
In the moment of Sovereign's distraction, the dryad in the distance took a sharp breath, and a loud roar erupted from its mouth. A blink of an air wave mixed with leaves and sawdust blew Soveland's hair back, and what was even more terrifying was that the sharp wooden thorns flew towards him like arrows fired from a short crossbow.
"Damn!" Sovereign cursed, and immediately ripped off the cloak behind him and slammed it in front of him as fast as he could.
There was a series of pops, and most of the wooden spikes were swept to the ground or pinned to the cloak, but a few still sporadically hit Soveland.
"Let's go!" Sovereign roared, slashing the wooden thorns embedded in his leather armor with his sword.
Dennis blushed but didn't say anything, he turned his head sharply and limped out in the direction behind him.
"Roar......" the dryad roared, as if expressing his anger at the escaped Dennis.
Soverang fended off the rattan in front of him and rolled on the ground, and as he stood up, a fist-sized stone whizzed and slammed into the dryad's head. "Come on, ugly bastard, your enemy is me!" he said aloud, hunched over.
Sure enough, Solweran managed to attract the Dryad's attention, and its narrow eyes even radiated an emerald green glow. In an instant, all the rattans that could be driven by the dryad surged towards Solveland, in all directions to the west, endlessly, like a spider in a giant web, trying to tear apart the small prey in front of him.
With no worries, Sovereign finally let go, and the feeling of being suppressed really made him fed up.
The sword drew a cold arc of light through the dark forest, and Sovereign nimbly shuttled through the cracks of the rattan, escaping the moment before the strangulation arrived. The clashing of weapons, the roar of the dryad, and even the thrashing of rattan against leather armor, all kinds of mixed sounds vented the fierce battle. One wants to calm the anger in his heart, and the other wants to buy more time for his partner.
The green sap flung out a bewitching trail in the air, and finally the star shattered into broken ripples and spilled on the ground, if it was the blood of the dryad, then it had already spent a great deal of money for the prey in the net. Innumerable rattans were cut and crushed, and new ones grew and mended.
Soveran wasn't in much better shape, the soft leather armor he had worn when he entered the Forest of Songs had been whipped to shreds, and even his face was covered in blood.
But his heart had never been so calm, and the nervousness, unease, and even excitement and fear that had just arisen when he faced the illusion had disappeared. In the waving sword light, his gaze became more and more calm and tenacious. This was the first time he had faced a life-and-death struggle, but he had found something that a martial artist might not find in his lifetime - courage.
Sovereign slowly leaned towards the other side, compressing the Dryad's attack radius shorter and shorter. Suddenly, the long sword in his hand slammed into the air, and the green juice that had been stuck to the sword quickly flew over a short distance, blurring the dryad's eyes.
The dryad's vision was suddenly blocked, and it screamed in horror as it slowly moved its body backwards. Sovereign rushed forward with his sword in hand.
The unexpected happened again, and small dark green flowers floated out of the canopy of the dryad, levitating in the air, blocking Solveland's direction.
"Damn it!" Sovereign didn't want to pass up this hard-won opportunity. As they tried to touch the suspended flowers with their palms, clouds of dark green smoke exploded and covered Soveland's left hand.
The Dryad regained his sight and struck again, and the rattan slammed into Soveland's chest with the sound of the wind, snapping and sending him a long distance with a huge momentum.
"Hell, how can this be!" Sovereign struggled to get up from the ground, a pain in his chest, and he looked at his left hand, and realized that the whole palm seemed to be paralyzed, and he could not exert any strength.
The rattan struck again, and Sovereign made a frantic decision, he put away his sword and jerked his own rattan in his hand. One, two, three, Sovereign ran, running, pinching more and more rattans under his left arm.
The strength of the dryad grew stronger and stronger, and a bundle of struggling green vines was dragged by Sovereign with all his might, circling the large tree next to him several times, and finally tied them with the cloak scattered on the ground.
"I can't kill you, can't I run away from you?!" With the dryad's angry roar and the tugging of trying to retract the rattan, Sovereign quickly chased in the direction where Dennis had disappeared.
The scenery passed by, and it didn't take long for Sauvera to see Dennis struggling through the trees.
"Kill that guy?!......" Dennis looked back at the sound of footsteps, but he quickly found the answer to the question in Soveland's face.
"Kill me, are you kidding! I almost got killed by it!" Sovereign immediately picked Dennis on his back and continued to run deeper into the woods.
"Let me down, let me face that dryad, at most abstain, and not ruin your trial because of this!" Dennis yelled as he patted Sauveray on the shoulder.
"Shut up!" said Soveland, "we've lived together at the academy for four years!, even if you're not my friend, you're my classmate!!!—you want me to leave you alone?!" He didn't want to waste time on the matter, so he changed the subject, "By the way, how did you get into trouble with such a guy?"
"For the sake of the Lord God, I'm just trying to find a straight branch to clamp my injured left leg!" Dennis's tone was full of chagrin, "Who knew a living dryad would be cut out?"
"What? Didn't you get your leg hurt by the Dryad?, and it attacked you because you were going to amputate him?!" Sovereign yelled a little speechless, "And how did your leg hurt?"
"I fell from a tree and accidentally fell and injured myself...... Dennis replied, "I have been in the forest for a long time, and I have not encountered any trials, what if I can find some special clues when I look at the top of the forest?"
"Hell, Dennis, for the sake of the Lord God, climb a tree, fall and get hurt?" Sovereign felt like he was on the verge of collapse, "Praise your intelligence, really!"
"I don't ...... either"
Before Dennis could finish speaking, a loud roar rang out in the dense forest behind them, and the birds perched on the trees scattered in all directions. Sovereign stopped, a sudden sense of dread spreading throughout his body.
Suddenly, the whole earth trembled, and countless vines burst out of the ground from under their feet, rushing towards Sovereign and Dennis, who were bound and fell into the air before the two of them could react. In the distance, the dryad with green blood trailing slowly walked towards them, roaring unstoppable, like a beating war drum, one higher than the other.
"Dennis, you've hurt me...... Sovereign said with a wry smile.
