Chapter 13: New Game Sisyphus

9 a.m. the next day.

Gu Fan came to the café and found that Su Tong had arrived.

"In the future, we don't have to work so early, our company works from 9 to 5, and early arrival and late departure are unnecessary.

"After all, the company is the boss, and we workers just earn a dead wage, and we should touch the fish."

These words made Su Tong confused.

At first glance, this sounds like a heartfelt statement from the company's seniors to the juniors, but the problem is......

Isn't Gu Fan the boss of the company himself?

He also looks like a worker.

But seeing that Gu Fan's attitude was so sincere, it didn't seem like he was talking back.

I don't understand.

Su Tong felt that this company seemed to have a kind of evil door, as if the painting style was completely different from the game companies she had interviewed before.

"The next new game that our company is going to develop is called Sisyphus, which is the design of the game.

"You don't need to be responsible for the development of the game, if you have nothing to do, you can just look at the design of the game, or play our company's previous game "Hell Tracks".

Gu Fan said, placing another plan printed in advance on Su Tong's desk.

The design of this game is, of course, also provided by Lilith last night.

Gu Fan still has to develop the game honestly as before, and can't make any changes.

Soon, Gu Fan and Su Tong began to read the game design draft in their hands, and the second floor of the café became quiet again.

As the name suggests, this game is based on the Greek myth of "Sisyphus".

In mythology, Sisyphus was originally a king, but he angered the gods. The gods then banished him to hell and punished him for pushing a boulder to the top of the mountain. But this boulder is too heavy, and every time it doesn't reach the top of the mountain, it will roll down, and all the work done is wasted.

So Sisyphus did it over and over again, endlessly. The gods believed that there was no harsher punishment than this ineffective and hopeless labor.

Sisyphus is quite well-known in the world, and many people have put forward their own interpretations of this mythical story, either as a metaphor for the day-to-day, hopeless life, or through this tragic figure to express a spirit of resistance.

But in any case, the "Stone of Sisyphus" itself is a very famous punishment.

"Sure enough, she is the one who knows the most about games among the demons of hell, Lilith is still very smart, and she has learned to use local materials and copy standard answers." Gu Fan couldn't help but sigh.

In this game, all the player has to do is play as Sisyphus and push the big rock that will never reach the top of the mountain.

It's just that in the game, "Mountain" has more details.

It is no longer a simple, fixed-slope hill, but a huge mountain range of extremely complex terrain and astonishingly high altitude.

And if you look closely at the details of this mountain, you will find that this is not a "mountain" that exists in hell, but "purgatory" itself.

Hell and purgatory are two completely different concepts, hell is the place where the guilty are punished, and purgatory is the place where the sinners atone for their sins.

Obviously, in the design of Sisyphus, Lilith combined the legend of Sisyphus with the setting of Purgatory Atonement, which together form the underlying structure of the game's worldview.

Coincidentally, the appearance of Purgatory happens to be a mountain.

In Dante's Divine Comedy, purgatory, also known as the "Pure Realm", floats in the sea of the Southern Hemisphere and is a huge mountain range divided into twelve layers, each corresponding to a sin.

In the design there is a large original painting that depicts the structure very clearly.

At the bottom are the sea and the beach, and the souls of the dead wander on the beach, symbolizing those who have been banished, repented at the end of their lives, and have been forgiven by God.

The road zigzags upwards from cliff to cliff, and the next three layers correspond to those who are late to their deathbed because they are lazy, those who are dying because they are dying, and those who are too busy with earthly things to confess late.

This place is collectively referred to as the "Outer Periphery of Purgatory".

Then through the "purgatory gate", and then there is the place where the truly sinful person atone for his sins, and from the bottom to the top are "pride", "jealousy", "anger", "laziness", "greed for money", "gluttony", and "lust".

Each floor has a corresponding representative, such as Guiniceri, Belaqua, Beatrizi, etc.

Each layer also has a different style and theme, for example, in the "gluttony" layer, which is depicted in the "Divine Comedy": the souls of gluttonous people are very emaciated, because they have indulged in cravings in their lifetimes, and now they are hungry.

The scene layout of each floor also corresponds directly to the style of this floor.

For example, in the "Gluttony" layer, most of the scenes are made up of gigantic delicacies on which the player needs to push boulders forward.

In the same way, the layer of "greed for money" is all kinds of treasures, and the layer of "greed for sex" is ...... Ahem, you can't go into detail, and if you talk about it in detail, you won't be able to judge it.

In short, after reaching the top of the mountain of the whole purgatory, there is an earthly paradise, also known as the "Garden of Eden".

In the Divine Comedy, Dante is carved on his forehead by a guardian angel as he walks through the gate of Purgatory, and then washes off a letter from his forehead every time he ascends to the first floor of Purgatory, which also represents the cleansing of a sin.

And "The Garden of Eden at the Top of Purgatory" and "Sisyphus Pushes the Stone Up the Mountain" happen to have a lot in common, which obviously became the two biggest inspirations for the game "Sisyphus".

All the player has to do is play as Sisyphus pushing a boulder up the hill, from the lowest level of the seashore to the Garden of Eden at the top of purgatory.

In the process, you will encounter various winding routes, and if you are not careful, boulders will roll down the bottom of the mountain, and everything will start from the beginning.

Well, it's a good way to torture people.

As for the specific operation of this game, it is relatively simple.

There are only three actions that the player can perform, namely "Move", "Move Stones", and "Jump", and of course, all three of them will interact differently with the boulder.

In appearance, it is a spherical stone, but it is not as smooth as a pure ball, but still retains some edges and corners, ensuring that it does not roll down easily at a relatively gentle angle, and still retains the hope of pushing to the top.

Its size is quite impressive, so when Sisyphus pushes the boulder forward, the visuals are quite stunning.

However, Sisyphus is a mythical figure after all, and his strength is far beyond ordinary people, and under special circumstances, he can even lift the boulder with difficulty and carry it on his shoulders.

This won't last long, but it will allow him to jump over obstacles or ravines.

Of course, these are all representations of the picture, and the player does not need to control Sisyphus to perform specific actions on the boulder, but only needs to complete the basic operations.

However, compared to the "moving", "carrying" and "jumping" of regular games, the action of this game is obviously different.

Due to pushing a large rock, the movement in this game will be affected by the inertia of the boulder, which is manifested in the following ways: only a small amount of steering (somewhat similar to driving), and the steering has a certain lag; The greater the slope when going uphill, the slower the speed of movement; When passing through some small ditches, although you can push them directly, it takes a certain amount of time, and there is a risk that the boulder will get out of your hands.

The player can briefly carry the boulder and carry it on their backs, but not for long.

Because he was carrying a boulder, Sisyphus was also more dangerous than ordinary jumps when jumping, and once he stepped on the edge and did not stand firmly, he could lose his balance and fall directly.

In short, the basic gameplay of this game is simple, it's a bit like the "Hopping Music" in some games, the biggest difference is that the player has to push a rock all the way to complete these operations, and it's more difficult.

What's even more terrifying is that there are even monsters in the game that will attack Sisyphus!

Lilith didn't design the huge number of mobs in the game, she went even further, throwing a dragon in it.

This dragon is known as the 'Purgatory Dragon', and its appearance is quite terrifying, not only does it have a huge body and huge wings that are common in the Western fantasy world, but it is also covered with cracks in its scale armor and burns with the flames of hell.

It does not actively attack Sisyphus, but it will circle around Purgatory, appearing at a nearby spawn point and passing Sisyphus after reaching a specific location.

Sometimes they will stop at a random place, spitting hellish flames and burning sinners on the ground.

If the Helldragon flies and the player is moving or jumping, there is a high chance that the wind blowing up the dragon's wings will blow them off balance, and the boulder will roll down, undoing all the work.

Standing still can withstand the wind, but it is also possible to be rubbed by the dragon's wings or unluckily sprayed by the flames of hell, and the boulder will roll down and lose all the effort.

In short, Gu Fan had never seen the real Sisyphus, and he didn't know how difficult his challenge was.

But one thing is for sure, the difficulty of this game is probably even higher than the real difficulty of the myth of Sisyphus!
