Children of the Stars Chapter 13
It wasn't until the evening of the next day that the two of them finally managed to scrub the floor of the main building of the base - in some places it was even cleaner and brighter than before, and the dilapidated base seemed to have a glimpse of its former glory.
After replacing some of the components that had been burned by the electromagnetic shock wave, Mosilaire also took the time to look at several solar generators in the outdoor power array.
Solar panels that may have been around for decades are covered in dust, and they look a little better when cleaned up with rags.
It's just that the structure of solar generators is more complex, and the aging damage is more serious, so it is naturally much more difficult to repair.
Even so, Mosilaire stubbornly repaired one of them—it took her a day and a half, along with a lot of chips and parts.
But it's worth it. In mild seasons when there is little wind, solar generators can generate much more electricity than wind turbines, and they are much more stable when they are integrated into the grid.
After simple calculations, a monocrystalline silicon solar panel can generate about 1700W of power when the sun is full at noon, and it can provide about 50W of electricity when there are no clouds at night - this relieves the problem of power shortage at the base, and the plants in the cultivation box can grow more stably.
But Mosilaire and Winnie still need to clean up the meat pieces all over the floor. After a little consideration, they planned to collect the disgusting flesh and entrails and throw them all under a dirt slope located three hundred meters downwind of the base - at this time, the trolley that Mosilele had built before came in handy, and the cart with a relatively large capacity greatly improved the efficiency and saved Mosilele and Winnie a lot of time.
So at Winnie's suggestion, the frowning Mosilaire thought for a long time before coming up with an interesting name worthy of the cart that had made a great contribution to the base for the second time.
“AE86”
This is the name that Winnie finally painted on the cart with paint.
Five or six days have passed since the zombie riots, and the quiet and peace of this large, empty base has finally returned.
The first batch of vegetables with a short growth cycle in the cultivation box, such as small greens and small cabbage, have been harvested, and these little guys who have grown for more than 20 days are growing gratifyingly, and because they are planted in the advanced cultivation box, their average weight can reach more than half a catty.
Mosilaire harvested the forty or so vegetables that had begun to bloom and set seeds, and after collecting their seeds, she and Winnie got the fresh vegetables, which were about thirty pounds in size—in order to preserve these delicate little treasures that could drip water, she also went to clean and repair the refrigerators of the two food storage warehouses, and piled the harvested vegetables into the cold storage that was empty and could echo even if you stomped it.
While the food bank still has an echo when stepped on it now, at least a little less – and maybe psychologically, who knows?
Even if electrifying the cold storage means that the power consumption of the base will increase by more than 400W, it will still be worth it in the long run, because with the increase in the planting area of various crops in the base, the food stored in the cold storage will only increase.
And the seed in the jar, Mosilaire, had figured it out to-day—Winnie, to be exact.
Inside the storage jar is more than a pound of sweet potato seeds, which can be planted intensively in an area of about 120 square meters after planning - Mosilaire had never known that sweet potatoes still have seeds - which is really interesting.
Given that Miss Mosilele knew nothing about farming, Winnie volunteered to take on the difficult task of farming—in her words, rolling in the fields for as long as she could remember, dealing with all sorts of non-verbal crops. In fact, this is also a job that many tribal children need to do.
If the fields under their management are harvested in the fall, the children are rewarded with extra food and even meat from the adults. But if they don't, they'll be whipped several times and die of agony in a high fever caused by an infected wound – no one will remember them, except their parents, who wept for them.
Winnie is an orphan abandoned in the blizzard, but she has always been a hard worker, and the food output of the fields she tended is a little higher than that of the other children, so she can occasionally get some food from the adults that allows her to go further in the wind and snow than the other emaciated children, so she breaks free from the claws of death and ice and finds Mosilaire and her base.
Winnie is grateful for everything she can have now. Whether it's warm food, a warm mat, or a ...... Sister Mosilaire, whom she depended. She loved it, so she decided to do something about it – especially farming, which was her only strength.
According to her previous experience, if this pot of seeds is planted in the right soil, 1,000-2,000 catties of sweet potatoes can be harvested in five months, depending on luck, weather, and the experience and proficiency of the grower.
However, if it is planted in a magical high-grade clay cultivation box and carefully cared for, the ripening time of sweet potatoes can be shortened to more than three months, and the yield will increase slightly.
However, since there are not many soil cultivation boxes in the base, except for some of the row-type cultivation boxes used to grow vegetables, berries and some herbs transplanted by Winnie, she can probably use the cultivation box to grow 30m² of sweet potatoes, so theoretically, Mosilaire and Winnie can get nearly 400 catties of sweet sweet potatoes after three months, and another batch can be harvested in the next two months, about 800-1600 catties.
But before identifying and delineating the planting area, Mosilaire and Winnie have one more important thing to do.
In fact, there is a separate, protective thick wall outside the main body of the base, which not only includes all the outbuildings around the base, but even encloses a large area of land that can be used for planting.
This protective wall is a good way to keep the walking dead at bay and prevent them from trampling on the planting area,—— as long as they fill in the gaps in the old wall that are three or four meters long.
Earlier, Mosilaire didn't have the time and energy, but after he had the time and energy, the cursed, haunting zombies came out of the dirt again, so the restoration plan had to be put on hold until now.
But now the zombies in the surrounding area have either been broken to pieces by Mosilaire, or they have been attracted by distant artillery fire and left the plain in large numbers. So you see, it's a really good opportunity – and it's not going to be missed.
Not to mention the materials needed, there are quite a few warehouses stacked in the base - sand, cement, stone and other various building materials are crowded in one corner.
These heavy, worthless things, not to mention the looters who once swept through this place, didn't even pay much attention to Mosiliel when he was counting and examining resources—they didn't mean much other than bruising your teeth and scratching your stomach when you eat them.
But now, they're finally going to be handy when it comes to repairing walls.
The work took them four days, during which time some zombies roamed from other places, but they were all dealt with by Mosilele with a freshly sharpened spear - this time Mosilele learned the lesson of the previous time, using a tougher steel pipe and firmly welding a sharpened steel bar to the front end. - Yes, the same steel bar she used to defend the base.
Before the cement of the new wall was completely dry, Mosilaire still needed to keep an eye on the stupid zombies to prevent the gap that had just been plugged from being pushed open by the fools.
While the zombies from other areas had not yet arrived, Mosilair would sometimes go out with Winnie to gather food, or cut down trees and gather wood—but Mosilaire never allowed Winnie to leave her sight—especially when she saw a deer that had been transformed.
As for how Mosilaire could tell,—— if you could see through her beautiful clear eyes that the male reindeer with nothing in his belly was jumping up and down trying to come and play with you, I'm sure you would understand why she was so sure that it was an animal not to be petted.
Since Mosilare's charged rifles had completely lost power, their weapons now consisted only of Mosilel's new spear and Winnie's high-voltage stun gun.
This greatly limited their range of movement, as no one dared to leave the safety of their shelter with such a rudimentary weapon—unless the man was a true fool. Obviously, neither Mosilaire nor Winnie are not.
Nature is truly a treasure trove in its purest form, and everything found in it doesn't require you to pull out your pathetic salary card.
With a careful search, Mosilaire and Winnie can find something edible in some ponds and grass every day.
Sometimes they had a handful of berries in their backpacks, sometimes some wild vegetables, and if they were lucky, they could find some quail eggs in the grass, and even Mosilaire once stuck a 3-pound carp with a spear in a deep pool! Needless to say, they all ended up in the bellies of Mosilaire and Winnie.
The cement, which had been exposed to the sun for several days, had finally stabilized, and the range of Mosilaire and Winnie's activities naturally expanded to the open space on the periphery of the main body of the base, which had to be reached by sneak in the past.
They toiled hard to rebuild a crooked aqua latrine out of a messy plank, and they harvested the wild weeds to weave new straw mats.
They also had a new pillow filled with fluffy duck feathers.
Although the fighting in the distance was much longer than Mosilere had predicted, and the heavy artillery fire continued for days without stopping, Mosilere and Winnie were used to it.
Especially after their food has improved, these two heartless guys can happily eat with each other while sharing the interesting stories they have heard with each other amid the faint sound of artillery fire.
In addition to the regular packaged survival food, they were able to eat an extra plate of fried greens and some cabbage soup at each meal – thankfully, Mosilaire finally didn't have to drink the soup in the packaged survival food!
If she hadn't looked at the label, she wouldn't have been able to tell which of these lackluster soups was tomato and beef soup and which was stewed pork bones.
Mosilelle was sure Winnie didn't like the soup in the packaged survival food either, as she had seen the honest boy sneaky and dump them outside the base more than once.
