Chapter 22: About the Outline

When you sit in front of the computer and want to write a long, money-selling novel, you have decided on the subject matter you want to write and you have the main characters in mind, what should you do next?

The essence of the novel is the plot and the characters, and the two complement each other. If a book can do both, with a novel and attractive plot and very successful characters, then as long as the author is not as lazy as a turtle, the book is doomed.

But we are talking about newcomers, especially many newcomers who have only read a lot of books, only written essays or essays, or even business copywriting or various reports, and have never written long or short novels.

Then at this time, don't rush to write the opening of your own novel, but write something called an outline.

Newcomers, including many old people, feel that the outline is useless. We often meet such authors, who tell the editor very clearly that I am going to write two million words, how do I know what the plot will be in the future? It's all about writing on the same day, or even thinking about it while writing.

Believe me, no matter what you think, a newcomer will not understand that writing is actually a very painful thing that consumes quite energy and time. Before you put pen to paper, or after you have written thousands of words, you will not feel bored with what you have written and the pain of not being able to write.

But after tens of thousands of words, you will find that the future development of what you have written is blurred. The story of the plot is incomprehensible, and that sense of failure that you don't know what to write about will drive you crazy. In addition, the newcomer who was not popular at that time was not watched by no one to hit the writing emotion, and the popular one was scolded and hit the writing emotion. Coupled with the feeling of exhaustion that cannot be written, this is the most likely and first front in writing, which is the magic barrier, and in our experience, thirty percent of the works of eunuchs fall here. This hurdle is the first dragon gate.

With an outline, it's easier to get over here, knowing what your follow-up plot is, and when you don't know what to write, the outline will become a pillar to support you. You can read it and remember what your passion was for writing this book, what kind of story you wanted to write, what kind of plot you wanted to write. You can even recall why you thought that your book could be popular and become income.

And even if it is an old author, after writing hundreds of thousands of words, the creativity and passion for creating this story have disappeared in the passage of time, and having an outline can also allow the author to have a better ending, rather than being scolded by readers for a simple ending.

Another point is that new authors often write about topics that deviate from their own topics. For example, if you are good at sports, you will jump out to cultivate the truth, magic superpowers and the like. Or it's obviously an adventure, but suddenly a lot of campuses and the like come out, and the highlight of the original work is lost in such a bend. And having an outline is very helpful for the author to grasp the overall situation of the work.

With all that said about the benefits of an outline, how can you write a suitable one?

Or some authors, saying that I wrote tens of thousands of words for the set, from the composition of the world to the production of a pistol, isn't this a good outline?

My clear answer here is that setting is not the same as outline. The outline is essentially to construct the skeleton of the plot you imagine, as well as the relationship between the main characters, and then the writing is to use words to flesh out the skeleton. As for the details, that's not what the outline needs to pay attention to. You can write that the protagonist has nothing to do with gold to pay the bills in a restaurant, or you can write about millions of armies fighting in a melee. But these things are not what the outline needs to consider.

My personal outline is to use time as a structure, to frame the time when the protagonist will go through something, and then decide the ending. This is the general outline I use. Then for each large paragraph, about 100,000 words or so, a more detailed outline will be formulated. Make sure that you are currently writing about the characters who appear.

As I am writing about Fengyue Street now, I have written about 500,000 words at present, and the main outline is about 5,000 words. Determines the character, origin, beginning and end, as well as the main enemies. Then there are three more paragraph outlines, each about fifteen hundred words.

Trust me, it will be of great help to the writer when you write down an outline of the story you want to write down in thousands of words before you put pen to paper. There is no good or bad outline, as long as you can determine the main line of your work. As long as you are willing to write, there will be a suitable outline. Remember, the outline is the main thread of the story you're decribing.

My personal recommendation is that the outline uses the story progression as a structure to frame the story of what the protagonist goes through, and then decide the ending. This is because it is easy for novices to keep a diary using the time method.
