The thirteen-story pagoda is because Buddhism was introduced into the Chinese sect as the thirteen sects, contrary to the Western Christian cultural concept, thirteen is considered an auspicious number in the Buddhist sect, and the Buddha sect was introduced into the Chinese sect as the thirteen sects, and the tower is also thirteen floors, representing the completion of merit.

In ancient China, influenced by the theory of the five elements of yin and yang, the double number was yin and the singular number was yang. The singular number represents auspiciousness. Therefore, the tower is generally built, and the number of floors is single.

However, in the ancient Sanskrit Buddhist scriptures, there are clear regulations for building pagodas from the first floor to the fifteenth floor, and the number of layers of the pagoda is equal to the number of phases of the pagoda. And the number of phases of the Buddha Elephant Pagoda is an even number.

As the saying goes: "Saving a person's life is better than building a seventh-level floating slaughter", which refers to the merit of saving a person's life, which is greater than the merit of building a tower. Seven-level refers to seven layers, then it means that the seven-story pagoda, the Buddhist school thinks that the seven-story pagoda is about 100 meters high, and the Buddha is built to make offerings, and the merit is great, and in the Buddhist school, the seven-story pagoda is the highest level of the pagoda; There is also a saying that the seven layers come from the seven treasures: gold, silver, glass, clams, agate, pearls, and roses.

There is a big difference between the Chinese Buddhism and the Sanskrit Elephant Buddhism, the number of layers of the Chinese pagoda is determined by the master and the monk and the abbot who presided over the construction of the pagoda of the temple, and the number of layers should be the same as the number of phases, which is the number prescribed by the Buddhist school.

Some towers in China do thirteen layers, and the phase wheel only does three to five plates or seven plates, there are many examples of this, in fact, this is very inconsistent with the provisions of the Buddhist scriptures, for a long time, "the mountain is high and the emperor is far away" spreads all over the place, all places are not the same, and the thoughts of the monks in the temple are not the same.

Moreover, from the Song and Yuan dynasties to the Ming and Qing dynasties, the number of rice monks is increasing, their historical and cultural cultivation is not enough, the Buddhist scriptures are read very little, and the local tower is built at will, no matter what regulations and requirements. Under such circumstances, some people in various places do this, and some do that, which is becoming more and more bizarre, and the result is not clear what kind of tower and several phases are not clear. According to the provisions of the Twelve Karma Sutras of the Three Tibetan Teachings of Buddhism, the number of phase wheels is one plate of the wheel king, two plates of Sumeru Huan, three plates of Sidhahan, four plates of Anasya, five plates of Arhat, six plates of Yuanjue, seven plates of Bodhisattva, and eight plates ......of Nyolai.

In order to worship the Buddha and absorb the "essence" of various doctrines, the singular is adopted in the construction of Chinese pagodas. The Buddha's own explanation:

The four sides of the tower symbolize the Four Noble Truths; The six sides symbolize the six realms of reincarnation; The eight sides are the eight phases of enlightenment; The twelve sides refer to the twelve karma and so on, and the odd number of layers of the tower in Buddhism means innocence and nobility, and the saying of "seven-level floating slaughter" is also known to ordinary people.

Chaoyang North Tower, built around 485, Chaoxia City, Liao'an Province, 13 stories high;

The tower of the king of law, built in 601 A.D. (the first year of Emperor Wen Renshou of the Sui Dynasty), is located in the Xianyou Temple of Zhouzhi County, Taibai Province, seven floors high, this is the only existing Sui Dynasty brick tower in China;

Sui relics pagoda, built in 601 A.D. (the first year of Emperor Wen Renshou of the Sui Dynasty), is located in Qixiashan Temple, the southern city of Wusu Province, seven floors high;

Big Wild Goose Pagoda, built in 652 A.D. (there are three years of Gaozong Yonghui of the Tang Dynasty), is located in the Great Ci'en Temple in Xi'an City, Taibai Province, the original ten floors high, only seven floors left due to the destruction of the war;

Xuanzang Tower, built in 669 A.D. (there is the second year of the general chapter of Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty), is located in Xingjiao Temple, Xi'an City, Taibai Province, 13 floors high;

The Little Wild Goose Pagoda, built in 707-709 A.D. (during the reign of Zhongzong Jinglong of the Tang Dynasty), is located in the Chenfu Temple of Xi'an City, Taibai Province, was originally 15 floors high, and only 13 floors were left due to the destruction of the earthquake;

The three towers of Chongsheng Temple, built in 824-839 A.D. (the reign period of Jingzong to Wenzong in the Tang Dynasty), are located in Chongsheng Temple, Dali City, Yunnan Province, 16 floors high, which is the ancient pagoda with the largest number of existing layers in China;

Du Shun Pagoda, built in 852 A.D. (there are six years of Xuanzong Dazhong of the Tang Dynasty), is located in Huayan Temple, Chang'an City, Taibai Province, seven floors high, this is one of the two existing ancient stupas of the Tang Dynasty in the temple;

Tiger Hill Tower, built in 959 A.D. (five generations after Zhou Shizong Xiande six years), is located in Suzhou City, Wusu Province, Tiger Hill, seven floors high, known as the world's second leaning tower;

Leifeng Pagoda and Baochu Pagoda, built in 977 A.D. (the second year of Taizong Taiping Xingguo of the Northern Song Dynasty), is located in Jingci Temple on the bank of West Lake in Yuhang City, Qiantang Province, with seven floors high;

Yingxian Wooden Tower, built in 1056 A.D. (the second year of Qingning of Liaoguo Daozong), is located in Yingxian County, Jinzhou Province, is five floors high, this is the world's highest and oldest existing wooden structure tower building;

Chaoyang South Tower, built in the second year of Dakang in the Liao Dynasty (1076), Chaoxia City, Liao'an Province, 13 high-level dense eaves brick tower;

Qiyun Pagoda, built in 1175 A.D. (rebuilt in the fifteenth year of King Shizong of the Jin Kingdom), is located in the White Horse Temple of Luoyang City, Yuzhou Province, with 13 floors high, which is one of the few existing Jin State buildings;

Xu Le listed the above one by one, a total of seventeen. one on the sixteenth floor, which belongs to the southern lineage; The two fifteen-storey ones are Songyue Pagoda and Little Wild Goose Pagoda; five on the thirteenth floor, of which two are lamp-burning pagodas; One of the ten floors, one for the fifth and nine floors, and the rest are six seven-story pagodas, and the most important thing is that four of them are related to Xuanzang Darangxiu, and the pagodas he presided over the construction of were one on the tenth floor, two on the thirteenth floor, and one on the fifteenth floor.

Xu Le sorted out all the contents into an article, detailing the circulation and style pattern of the stupa in China, which pointed out that the possibility of Xuanzang welcoming the true scriptures of the Buddha is more in the concept of the Buddha group, and the teachings of the Enlightenment Sect and the teachings of the Taoist Lao Tzu have a strong speculative nature and have a certain relevance, so the Buddha of the Burning Lamp does have the possibility of turning Hu for Lao Tzu and thus influencing the Buddha.

Especially Master Xuanzang, as a famous disciple of the Buddha in China, he wants to welcome Mahayana Buddhism, but the foundation of Mahayana Buddhism in the Brahmanic Elephant Kingdom basically does not exist. It can be said that the origin of Buddhism is indeed in the country of Sanskrit, but the Mahayana thought or Mahayana doctrine of the Buddha must have been influenced by the Chinese Laozi, because since ancient times, China has the inheritance of the worries of the world and the joy of the world, which is the cultural context and spiritual inheritance, and the interaction of the two major civilizations in the East has promoted the take-off of Buddhism again.

Therefore, Xuanzang is welcoming the true scriptures home, thus forming another jump in the Zen school of later generations, and this is the real point!

The separation of Mahayana and Hinayana is definitely the most important thing in Buddhism, and under the circumstances at that time, there must have been an external force to promote the formation of such a situation, even in Sarnath, when the wheel of the Dharma was first turned, it can be said that the Buddha still teaches Hinayana Buddhism, because he has to come step by step, and finally continue to push the Mahayana vehicle to roll forward!
