Chapter 5: Survival in Defeat

Polina is the first female technician ever trained by the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial University. She didn't force the machine to start it on the spot โ€“ the theory that Dusson's "high-altitude environment" problem affected the operation of the internal combustion engine was real.

Before the show began, she solemnly apologized to the nobles attending the ball, and then only showed the basic appearance of the machine on the grounds that "the machine had just arrived in Newsar and there was some damage during transportation".

Instead, she decided to just demonstrate the internal combustion engine at the ball, and explained the basic workings of the internal combustion engine through the blackboard behind her, as well as a board book on the blackboard.

Such a display is certainly far less effective than the impact of a real internal combustion engine running in front of the aristocracy. And the nobles in the ballroom themselves preferred to attend the ball rather than listen to a girl from Orin explain to them the design principles of the internal combustion engine.

At first, out of respect for Baroness Androni, the nobles were able to cheer up and listen. In the back, the nobles who had lost interest in the explanation simply began to "socialize" with their wine glasses. The voices around her grew louder and louder, and the chaotic movement even overwhelmed Polina's explanation.

She slowly stopped what she was doing, looked at the nobles around her who were busy socializing, and then threw down the chalk in frustration.

Madame Androni sighed, and she patted Polina's hand. He said to the great technician with a sad expression, "It's not your fault. โ€

"No...... As a great technician, I don't even think about the environment in which the machine is running......" Polina's eyes were a little red, and she replied in a thick nasal voice, "I'm sorry, Lady Androni. It's me who wasn't prepared......"

The interaction between the two fell into the eyes of the surrounding nobles, and several male nobles laughed unabashedly. Although they didn't say a word, such an act made Polina feel like a lightning strike. She was so frightened that she even planned to push her invention out of the ball immediately.

Dussand, who was observing the situation from the dessert table, seized the opportunity to squeeze out of the extravagant, even fragrant, gap of the aristocracy, and shouted as he tried to get closer to the center of the dance floor, "Lady Polina, please wait!" โ€

Although there is basically no one on the dance floor who cares about Polina, there is still a basic "politeness" to follow in everyone's social behavior. So now there are only noisy human voices on the dance floor with a low "buzz". And Dusund, who had not yet changed his voice, shouted loud and high, and immediately attracted everyone's attention.

"Mr. Lord." Polina nodded to Dussand, who was now very conflicted about her feelings.

On the one hand, she did need to thank Dussander for the reminder - otherwise, she would now have to face more than just the ridicule of the nobles.

But on the other hand, she was also a little angry.

The operation of the internal combustion engine in a high-altitude environment is a new topic that no one has attempted, and Dussander discovered the problem almost the moment he saw the internal combustion engine...... It would seem like she's stupid.

From the day she entered the Faculty of Mechanics at Imperial University as a woman, Polina had to prove to the men around her in all directions, anytime, anywhere, and in a variety of ways that she was "no more stupid than them."

Polina, who has become accustomed to confrontation and victory, is not able to accept her "stupidity", let alone that it is a ten-year-old boy who seems stupid against her.

"Please wait a moment here." After calming Polina first, Dusand turned around and began to shout, "Is Lord Tynar here?" โ€

"Lord Tynar is here." A little farther away a servant answered Dussand's call in a loud voice, and then walked through the ball with a well-dressed old man with a gold-wire monocle on his right side.

The old man walked slowly to Dussand's side and asked with some confusion, "Lord Dussand, are you looking for me?" โ€

"The textile bleach you invented earlier is the one you showed you at the last ball." Dussaint smiled and asked, "Has it been invested now?" โ€

Lord Tynar nodded in satisfaction, "Thanks to His Majesty the Merciful Emperor, the Royal Textile Society has invested twenty thousand gold pounds in my invention. โ€

"I wish you more miracles in your future inventions." Dussaint politely blessed the other party, and then asked, "I remember you would have brought a bottle of bleach with you for display purposes, did you bring it today?" โ€

"Of course." Lord Tynar raised the cane in his hand, then easily unscrewed the bronze faucet of the cane and asked, "How much do you need?" โ€

In the ballroom, bands that had not been prompted to start playing for a long time began to play soft serenades in order to liven up the atmosphere. The other aristocrats began to watch Dussand's performance intently.

Dusson found a large enough kettle, and after pouring about a pint of pale blue liquid from a metal cane into the kettle, Dusson found a heat-resistant rubber tube and put it on the spout.

He also took the gas lamp on the dessert table. Holding the kettle directly above the gas lamp, Dussaint adjusted the size of the flame slightly to avoid heating the liquid to a boil too quickly. Then he said to Polina on the side, "Could you please open the fence around the gas machine - where is the air intake?" โ€

Polina didn't know what she was supposed to do anymore. Almost mechanically, she completed the "preparations" little by little, under Dussand's instructions.

A steam fan was also removed from the warehouse by the servants. Its dimensions miraculously matched the intake of the gas machine, which saved Dussaint a lot of trouble in his preparation.

"This bleach, invented by Lord Tyner, has a very unique property โ€“ it releases oxygen when heated." In order to prevent the aristocracy around him, who had no knowledge of mechanics and chemistry, from becoming too bored, Dussaint began to explain his behavior, "Oxygen is an important gas that facilitates the combustion process. โ€

Dussaint lit one and blew it out, but the match with a spark on it reached out to the spout of the kettle. As soon as the match approached the rubber tube, it suddenly emitted an orange glow.

The surrounding nobles were attracted by this small light, and at the same time, Dussaint was already working on the second step.

The steam fan was turned on, and the fan began to run at full speed towards the horn-shaped intake of the gas engine. The oxygen line is then stuck behind the fan blades and the preparation is complete.

"The process itself is equivalent to a forced air intake." Dussand, while stealing the limelight from the nobles, explained to Polina, "Newsar is much smaller than Orin, and the atmosphere attracted by gravity is relatively thinner. So, the equivalent altitude here is two thousand four hundred yols. The internal combustion engine cannot naturally draw in enough air without commissioning โ€“ which causes the machine to fail to operate. โ€

Polina nodded, then pointed to the fan and said, "Fans can fan air into the machine through the fan blades to support combustion?" โ€

"This ......," Dussand's expression was a little helpless, "the fan doesn't provide much pressure, and what really works is the oxygen obtained by heating the bleach." โ€

He looked around and made sure that the attention of the nobles around him was at the kettle before whispering to Polina, "I can't guarantee that this machine will be able to move after the emergency treatment." โ€

Polina's expression didn't change, "I couldn't move anyway." โ€

"That's not even the worst-case scenario." Dussaint rolled his eyes, "I don't have the compression ratio and other data of your machine, and I don't have enough calculations to accurately control the operation of heating to produce oxygen...... Not being able to move is not so bad a result. If too much oxygen is given, in the worst case your baby invention may overheat after a few cycles and cause the piston to melt. โ€

"It's too late to stop." Dussaint asked seriously, "It's your invention after all, are you sure you want to continue experimenting?" โ€

Polina looked at the gas engine she had worked so hard to design and make, and then took a deep breath.

"It's designed to work. It's its destiny โ€“ even if it comes at the cost of damage. "If it breaks, and I don't get the investment of the nobles, I'll have to make a living." โ€

"I think you might be able to come and be my governess." Dusand smiled at Polina with the most sincere smile a child could have, "My last governess just left the day before yesterday...... This job pays very well, and I can earn a gold pound every week. โ€

Polina also laughed, she rubbed Dusander's hair and said seriously, "If I have the chance, I really want to meet your former teacher." He taught an amazing student. โ€

She looked at her invention and took a deep breath, "Let's get started!" โ€
