Chapter 24: The Future

Dussander has been really busy lately.

He hadn't had time to visit his mother's grave for almost three weeks.

In the past, when he was leading the reform of Newsar, no matter how busy he was, he could at least spare half an hour to visit his mother's grave, engrave a small line of words, or offer a bouquet of flowers. But now...... Dussander didn't even have that freedom.

Newsart is at the most critical stage, and it's not just Dussand...... Even Duchamp came out of his "house arrest" and began to pick up his daily routine.

Duchamp is now back in charge of the defense of the Nyusar orbit. This was General Horn's request. The old general, who was missing an arm, said to Dusaud very solemnly, "If anyone can raise the orbital defense of Newsal to an acceptable level, it is probably only Duchamp." โ€

Commodore Scharnhorst, who is now in charge of the defense of the Newsar orbit, is a subordinate of Duchamp, and before he was promoted to this post, Commodore Scharnhorst was the captain of the Dignity, the capital ship of the Newsar garrison. He is also the Fleet Commander of the Dignity Task Force.

Rising from the position of captain of the capital ship and commander of the fleet to chief of staff of the colonial garrison fleet is a very normal route to promotion. But this change of position did not suit Brigadier General Scharnhorst.

Commodore Scharnhorst was a standard naval officer. He graduated from the Naval Department of the Royal Military Academy in Olin and, in the eyes of his mentors, Scharnhorst was a very good research-oriented scholar. And almost all of his promotions and the difficulties he faced later were due to the quality of "excellent research scholar".

Fresh out of the Navy, Scharnhorst became a researcher at the Imperial Navy's Armament Research Department, where his research focused on the determination and countermeasures of multiple large-caliber artillery salvos in deep space during his decade-long research career.

To put it in layman's terms, Scharnhorst spent a full decade studying the effect of muzzle flare on adjacent shells when multiple large-caliber guns were fired simultaneously in the universe. His research was later applied to all of the Empire's large cruisers and capital ships, where all multi-mounted guns could not fire at the same time in order to ensure accuracy. Shots should be fired at least one second apart from adjacent barrels to ensure that the flare does not affect the flight of the warheads in the adjacent barrels.

After graduating from university, Scharnhorst, who spent a decade studying technical details, did not stop at the laboratory. Deep down, he still considers himself a soldier rather than a researcher or a great technician. He was willing to stay in the research room, studying and calculating the effects of artillery firing day after day, because his superiors gave him such orders.

Now that the order has been carried out, Scharnhorst has decided to make some choices for the rest of his life. He chose to join the front-line army, and then this choice was not surprisingly rejected by his superiors.

The Imperial Navy is a highly scientific and technologically advanced service, as evidenced by the fact that their sailors all have at least one secondary education. Therefore, unless the Imperial Navy's superiors were kicked in the brains by the allies, they would never let Lieutenant Commander Scharnhorst leave his research post and go to any front-line combat unit.

But Scharnhorst's own will was too strong, and he even began to contact the army - as long as he could join the front-line combat units, he was willing to join the army.

Eventually, in order to keep Scharnhorst in the Imperial Navy, and to "punish" this promising research officer for "fornicating with the Army", Lieutenant Commander Scharnhorst was transferred to the Newsar Garrison Navy with the rank of equal, and became a destroyer captain under Duchamp.

Scharnhorst proved to be an extremely good officer. He rose through the ranks of the Newsal Garrison Navy, rising from destroyer captain to capital ship captain and formation commander within five years. But after all, he was a research officer, and Commodore Scharnhorst made a major omission after he was promoted to chief of staff of the Newsar garrison.

According to General Horn's request, the garrison navy should ensure 100% identification of jump targets around the first and second orbits of the first and second satellites of Newsard. 85% recognition rate of the target from outside the second orbit to the asteroid dense area.

However, there were serious problems with the defense and execution of the Scharnhorst, and it was a very serious operational deployment mistake that a civilian ship from the Alliance was able to pass through the Guards orbital defense system, which should theoretically be very tight.

It was for this reason that Chief of Staff Scharnhorst was temporarily suspended, and Duchamp returned to the mountains to take charge of the naval defense of Newsar.

In addition to the adjustment of the navy's duties, Dussand's current most concerned things are progressing relatively smoothly. Researchers from the Department of Geology at the University of Newsart have found the uranium ore that Dusart has named, while researchers in the Department of Materials are working on experimental isotope separation. But...... How to determine that the isotopes are separated, how to efficiently separate and concentrate the isotopes, and how to make these isotopes accurately used in the form envisioned by Dussand...... This still requires a long period of research to solve.

The final step in the risk mitigation of Newsal Royal Bank was carried out, and after a month, the citizens of Palmer reported a total of 729 members of the El Party. The Palmer branch of the El-El Party, which was originally like a sophisticated machine, completely lost all its functions under this wave of blows. At the same time, Aika also searched for three "low-level nobles" who provided financial and material support for the El Party.

Their interrogation went very smoothly, for they were no more than former servants of Monsieur Duke. They hadn't undergone any rigorous anti-torture training, and they didn't even last more than two rounds in Aika's hands before they started talking about everything.

Following what they had explained, Aika found two strange-looking "devices" in an abandoned factory in Palmer. According to the aristocrats, the two devices needed to be aligned in the direction indicated by the turntable, and the "bolts" above the two machines were first connected with thick metal cables. It is then connected to the output shaft of a steam engine with sufficient power.

If you put two cables on the device into the reactor โ€“ one with a large piece of graphite tied to one end and metal at the other end โ€“ and start the steam engine, the end with the graphite will produce a large number of bubbles, which, when collected, can become a toxic yellow-green gas.

Based on the results of repeated interrogation, Dussander was surprised to learn that the equipment had been sent from Olin to Newsar twenty-two years earlier. However, no one had ever used such a machine since, and the person in charge of its preservation at the time did not know what it was for.

With Dussand's shallow knowledge of electricity, it is not difficult to see that both machines are essentially generators, and they are also quite advanced electromagnetic DC generators.

To what extent the Imperial people had studied electricity, Dussander did not know. At least after asking the professor at the University of Newsal, as well as Polina, both sides gave the reply that "we have not heard of this energy source at all". But these two devices do prove that the empire has a deep understanding of the existence of electricity and has turned it into practical devices.

These two devices are equivalent to DC generators that do not have commutator capability. Both generators are composed of two parts: a stator and a rotor. After the rotor rotates more than 180 degrees, the well-designed electromagnet in the stator part is automatically disconnected and demagnetized, while in the other generator, the electromagnet is energized at the same time, so as to achieve the design goal of continuous direct current output from both generators.

In Dussand's opinion, the Empire's knowledge of electricity has even surpassed the basic knowledge of electricity buried in his head, but for some reason, the Empire has always treated the study of electricity as a highly classified project. It is even nearly as secretive as Project Alpha, and has no intention of committing itself to the civilian sphere.

It's a completely illogical decision, and Dussart really can't understand why the empire would let go of such a technology that could change the whole society. The first time it was put into use, it turned out to be to make chlorine gas to kill people...... Isn't that a waste?

As a result, the Central Special Branch, which had just returned Envoy Fein back to Newsal, had a new assignment.

Find out exactly what department of the Empire is working on electricity, and also find out how far their research on electricity has progressed, and most importantly - why not publish the research on electricity and apply it to the civilian field.

"I still don't understand why you let your wife be this envoy." At the farewell party before Finn left, Dussaint deliberately found his old friend, who is now the leader of the Alliance's largest resistance, and asked, "Besides, you didn't tell me that you were married." โ€

"Jeanne and I are ...... Neighbors I've known since childhood. Finn was obviously not used to talking about his emotional life, and he simply said, "She thought I was dead on the battlefield, but...... When I returned home from Newsal, she left some behind and came to me. โ€

Dussaint nodded, "Although a lot of content should be omitted in the middle, in the end you got married." โ€

"Our business is going well, but it's too risky." Finn sighed, then lowered his voice and said, "I'll ask Jeanna to be an envoy, partly to protect her." Before she left, we were in a bad position. The Sanctuary is said to have assembled two fleets to encircle and suppress the agricultural planet we occupied...... It's the same as when you let Miss Lorraine lurk in Orin. If we fail and die, at least they have a chance to survive. โ€

Dussander was silent for a few seconds and didn't speak, he was really not sure if he failed...... Lorraine still has a chance of surviving. As an enemy, the empire is simply terrible. This human empire, almost as old as the Age of Discovery, doesn't know how many good things it has hidden. Project Alpha, Power Research ...... To be honest, even if the empire suddenly pulls out a fat man or a little boy now, Dussander will not be surprised.

"We can't afford to fail." After a few seconds, Dussander said very firmly, "Think about it, how many people will die in the war if we fail?" We've shed too much blood โ€“ enough of it! โ€

"Only by not being afraid of bloodshed can we completely stop the bloody war." Finn patted his bag on his side and said, "I've read your 'Dussandism', and I've been deeply touched by a lot of things in it. โ€

Dussander glanced at the crossbody bag at Finn's side and was surprised, "You still have it?" Wouldn't it be nice to put this kind of thing in the room and look at it? โ€

"That's not going to happen." Finn, whose face was slightly red after drinking a few glasses of wine, said solemnly, "You can think I'm flattering you, but I think ...... The content of this book is of great value, and may even make more sense than the peace and mutual assistance agreement we have just signed. โ€

"Maybe you wrote it as if it were some kind of diary, but I saw the future in it, a future where everyone can live in dignity." A future where we no longer have to slaughter each other, and we can work together to explore the infinite universe, united, equal, fraternity, and prosperity. โ€
