Chapter Twenty-Nine: Not Pleasant
The first foundations of the local regime in Duchamp and Saxony were not a very "pleasant" experience.
According to the information revealed, Saxony is in a desperate state of confusion. And this chaos seems to have no possibility of being eliminated by virtue of Saxony's inherent social mechanisms.
The attack on Saxony was similar to, but not identical, to Newsal. The biggest difference between the attack on Saxony and the attack on Newsar is the result - all the middle and high nobles of the whole of Saxony, led by the Duke of Saxony and up to the twenty-seven barons, died before the first wave of the attack was over.
The attack on Saxony was very targeted, and the clergy of the Church, dressed in the armor of the Steam Knights, first killed all the middle and high nobles, and then began to massacre the rest of the control team. From the Governor's Palace to the Home Office, from the police station to the Royal Post Office, their actions seem to have been carefully designed. From the beginning of the attack to the time when most of the clergy were blown to pieces by the guns of the garrison that had rushed back to help, almost all of the administrative system in Saxony collapsed. Civilians have been killed and wounded, and a large number of mines and equipment have been damaged.
To make matters worse, six giant grain storage warehouses in Saxony were maliciously set on fire. The 46 million surviving Saxons would have been able to provide food for at least eight months without interruption thanks to the reserves in these six silos. If they were able to adopt the same strict control and rationing system as in Newsar, the food supply would be guaranteed for about 12 months.
And the situation in Saxony is ...... The complete collapse of all government systems.
The sailors of the garrison, although they destroyed the enemy, were simply not able to cope with the situation - they had no supplies, no clear orders, no food, no medical capabilities...... Nothing.
As is customary, the Saxon garrison made the decision to "call for help from Newsar", and since the redcoat postmen and their shuttles were almost completely destroyed, the task became the large cruisers of the Saxon garrison.
However, they never managed to reach Newsar, and at the regular jump point, the garrison responsible for delivering the message was ambushed by the Imperial Royal Guard. Unprepared, they were destroyed by a salvo of several Imperial capital ships.
After the loss of three large cruisers, serious civil strife broke out within the Saxon garrison. Part of the sailors lost the courage to set out again for help, while the other insisted that the news should at least be sent to Orin. The argument between the two sides gradually escalated to the point of verbal aggression and even pushing.
And driven by hunger and panic, the Saxon garrison finally collapsed completely two weeks after the attack. The commander of the fleet and the chief of staff of the fleet caught fire in the conference room. The commander of the fleet shattered the chief of staff's jaw with a single shot, and he was beaten into a hornet's nest by other mid-ranking officers loyal to the chief of staff.
Fire and quickly unfurled on the flagship of the Saxon garrison, and almost every nervous soldier attacked his former companion by all means. After a cannibalistic battle that lasted for half an hour, the commanders and staff withdrew their ships respectively, and then began to regroup their forces and prepare for a decisive battle.
Food was limited, supplies were dangerous, and guns were scarce, but there were outrageous numbers of guns on ships and in bases. In order to obtain food and other supplies in the hands of the other side, and to avenge his own commander (His Excellency the Commander or Chief of Staff), a large-scale battle began near Redston, the capital of Saxony.
Both the Navy soldiers and the civilians who joined them to survive lacked adequate light weapons. At first, there were some officers whose pistols could be pooled to work, but as the fighting continued, these small arms ran out of ammunition, and the small arms that had gradually rusted due to lack of maintenance gradually became useless scrap metal.
There are no light weapons, but the fighting cannot be stopped. The sailors, who were already hungry and crazy, began to force the poor people they had "conscripted" into the army to become their cannon fodder. Before they set out to fight, each person was forcibly injected with a potion that they had found from the Imperial Army's combat readiness warehouse.
People injected with this potion will become bloodthirsty monsters, they don't need to eat, and even if they are hungry for six or seven days in a row, they can suddenly burst out with incredible strength.
These potions became the main motivation to support the two sides to continue fighting, and those who did not use the potions wanted to fill their stomachs...... Then you can only do whatever it takes.
For example, eating the corpses of enemies.
For the soldiers who go into battle, killing the other party is no longer as simple as destroying the enemy. Their goal is to turn each other into food, or die completely without having to be tormented by hunger and the hungry gaze of their comrades.

The people who came into contact with Duchamp were the victors in this hand-to-hand fight. According to the other side, he was once the chief engineer of a destroyer of the Saxon garrison fleet and was also a loyal subordinate of Mr. Commander.
As he said this, the chief engineer was still carrying a human leg that had been broken and torn off.
Duchamp quietly listened to all the chief engineer's words, and then asked the red-clothed postman who accompanied the team to come over and ask the question a few times. After the red-clothed postman gave a look of "what he said was the truth, there was no more value in asking", Duchamp nodded and began to speak.
"We've come with a lot of food and supplies, and we're in a position to help Saxony re-establish order." Duchamp said as he took two pieces of fresh bread from his adjutant and handed them over, "You eat the real food first." โ
After watching the chief engineer drop his leg and begin to eat bread, Duchamp stepped back a little like the other Navy soldiers who were dodging the man's leg, and then he pulled out his pistol, opened the safe, and pulled the trigger on the chief engineer's forehead.
"Bang!" A large chunk of the chief engineer's skull was torn open, and the brains sprayed out and smeared on the leg of the man who had been thrown to the floor.
The chief engineer who fell to the ground and convulsed did not make any movement, but his hand still clung to the piece of bread and did not let go no matter what.
"Throw him to the side of the road." Duchamp withdrew his pistol and ordered in a low voice, "Register his personal information and be treated as a deserter." โ
No one cared that the expeditionary force and the Imperial Navy were no longer in the same order, and no one cared that the body of this former "comrade" was thrown on the side of the road. In fact, to be able to treat him as a "deserter" is already Duchamp's show of mercy.
Under imperial law, cannibalism was an undisputed felony. Whether eating human flesh on purpose or when there was "no other choice", imperial law had specific provisions for cannibalism โ criminals were to be executed in the form of beheading and mutilating their bodies.
According to the canon of the Church, beheading and dismembering the body means that the criminal has been completely deprived of all rights and dignity as a "human being."
Executed as a deserter, at least Mr. Chief Engineer still died as a human being.
"Command the fleet to land at the interstellar landing site." Duchamp's order was very simple and straightforward, "Order the expeditionary force to set out in a combat posture after the fleet has landed, and clear all groups around the interstellar landing field that are assembled in a size of five or more." โ
The previous orders are normal, but when it comes to the beginning of the "clean-up" section, there are some abnormalities.
"More than five people?" Lawson, who was listening to the order, hesitated a little and asked, "All groups of more than five people need to be eliminated?" There may be ordinary families here......"
"These two factions have been fighting around the landing site for at least three months. Not only do they forcibly recruit civilians around them, but they even eat people. Duchamp glanced at the young man, who was about the same age as his son, and said, "In this case, the group of more than five people who can survive around the landing field cannot be an ordinary family. โ
If a few months ago, Duchamp would never have explained it to anyone else - an order is an order, you can be suspicious of an order, but you must not have any hesitation in carrying it out. Even if a junior officer wants to question an order, he must do so only after the order has been executed.
The army is such an organization, and this kind of habit and order, which seems to outsiders to be completely unreasonable and even excessively "rigid," is the foundation for maintaining the army as an efficient and violent organization.
But now the explanation ...... Duchamp also had no sense of disobedience. He knew very well that the young man in front of him was one of Dussand's most trusted henchmen. He was old, and Lieutenant General Horn was at least twenty years older than himself. Even Brigadier General Philip is forty-four years old this year...... Among the younger generation of soldiers, there are not many who have shown command talent and at the same time have the high level of trust of Dussand.
There is no doubt that Rosen is the supreme commander of the military field chosen by Dussand. Perhaps in a few years, or a decade, he will be the one who will represent Dussart in command of the entire Nusar military force.
However, Rosen's knowledge and experience were not enough to make him a man who could do the job. Although in the years following the establishment of Rosen Metal Industries and Integrated Security, Rosen went crazy to learn a lot of knowledge, and was also studied by Dussandra and Lorraine. But he is still not enough to be a qualified senior commander.
Duchamp decided to do his son a favor and take Rosen with him when he had the chance. In the command cabin of the flagship were all high-ranking officers, and of course they could understand what Duchamp meant - this would not have any adverse consequences for the execution of orders later.
"Your tank units are also released - be cautious when choosing targets to attack." Duchamp's direct order to Rosen was more like teaching, "Although the other side only has some small and medium-caliber guns dismantled from the ship, and the charge is not very sufficient...... But these small and medium-caliber guns are enough to kill people. When attacking, they must pay attention to the direction of attack, they use the artillery that has been temporarily installed after dismantling, and it is difficult to transfer and quickly adjust the firing elements. It would be much better if you could attack from the flanks or from behind......"
Rosen nodded as he took out a small notebook and began to record, his father had never communicated with him like this since he was a child, and there were even fewer opportunities for hand-based education. Although there is still some incomprehension and resentment about Duchamp's dismissal of Dussander from all positions at that time, he ...... He is still used to treating this middle-aged man who is not smiling in the position of "father".
This is probably the reason why he would continue to secretly visit the black tower in the manor after Duchamp was placed under house arrest.
For him, Dussander was a benefactor, a brother, a relative and an object of allegiance. But for Duchamp, the identity is much simpler.
Duchamp is a somewhat clumsy father who is not good at expressing his feelings.
