Chapter 17: Tyrion Lannister
The sheng song and dance music was left behind by Egger in the hall, the cold wind was blowing, and the empty courtyard was extremely silent. The guards on the battlements of the inner walls tightened their cloaks to ward off the cold, and the night watchman turned his head to find the figure of the young man and walked towards him.
"Boy. An unfamiliar voice sounded, and the traverser didn't see where the speaker was, but knew that his memory was not wrong, and that he hadn't taken the right step. "The guy next to you is a wolf?"
"It's the Ice Wolf, called Bai Ling. Jon turned to find the speaker, and at the same time saw Egger walking out the door, turning his head away to keep them from seeing his tears. "What are you doing there, why didn't you attend dinner in there?"
Egg walked around the pillar next to the door, and in the direction of Jon's subconscious gaze, he also saw Tyrion Lannister. The gnome was sitting on a ledge protruding above the front door of the hall looking down on the two, perhaps disguised as statues if they could stay still.
"It was too hot and noisy inside, so I drank more. The dwarf replied to Jon's question, "I learned a long time ago that it's rude to vomit on your own brother. Can I get a closer look at your wolf?"
Jon hesitated for a moment, then nodded slowly, "Can you come down by yourself?" or do you want me to get a ladder?"
"Go, look down on me?" said the little man. He pushed his hands back, and the whole person tumbled into the air. Deftly shrink in the air, land lightly on your hands, and stand up on a backflip.
Xiaoice Wolf subconsciously took a few steps back, and even Iger had to admit that in terms of relative size, Tyrion's hand was quite wonderful.
The dwarf patted the dust off his body and smiled, "I think I must have scared your little wolf." I'm sorry. β
He wasn't scared. Jon bent over as he spoke, "Bai Ling, come here, come here, be good." β
The wolf scurryed over and rubbed Jon's cheek affectionately, but remained wary of Tyrion Lannister. When the gnome reached out to touch it, it immediately pulled back, bared its sharp teeth, and let out a silent growl. "Are you scared?" said Lannister.
"Bai Ling, sit down. Jon commanded, "That's it, sit still." He looked up at Tyrion, "You can touch him now." He won't move unless I tell him to. I'm training him. β
"I see. Lannister scratched the fluff between Bai Ling's ears as white as fine snow, "Good wolf, wolf." β
......
Egg stood aside, looking for a way to interject and quickly get the gnome's attention, when Tyrion shut up and rubbed the wolf's head, he finally got the chance to speak: "Jon...... I don't know if I can call you that, but I have to tell you that your uncle doesn't want you to join, it's for your own good. β
"For my good?" the boy was still a little angry. "For my sake, he should have taken care of his brother back then, don't let me be born from this world!"
"Ah......h Glancing Jon up and down, "You're Ned Stark's bastard son, and you want to be a night watchman, but Bunyan refuses you?"
The dwarf could guess the truth from just a single sentence of conversation between the two, and his speed of thought was not unpleasant, but unfortunately his words were tantamount to rubbing salt in his wound, Jon pursed his lips and stood up, his little wolf dodging Tyrion's touch almost at the same time.
"Uh...... I apologize if I offended you. The little Lannister immediately realized something, "but why...... Isn't the Great Wall a good place to place illegitimate children without looking at one's origins and only paying attention to ability, one to deal withβuh, I mean? β
"When you see the tents set up by the 100,000 savages gathered together to attack the Great Wall, the giants tall enough to tear people in two with their hands, the pale wretchs with blue eyes piercing the bodies of their comrades with ice swords, and the slain getting back to their feet after falling cold...... You won't feel like it's a good place. β
"Somewhat catchy profile. Tyrion stood up and looked back at Egg. "First of all, I have to say that I have great respect for the Night's Watch and for the way you sacrificed yourself to defend the Kingdom...... I'm not going to make that vow to you, but I do admire you. β
The gnome paused before continuing: "However, I don't believe in the legends about giants, ghouls, and other demons and monsters, and the difference between the wild and us is that when the Great Wall rises from the ground, they happen to be on the north side of the Great Wall. β
"Lord Tyrion, have you ever been to the Wall? Did you know that the Great Wall of Desperation is the largest structure ever built by man?"
This is a well-established fact. Tyrion shrugged, "Not only the largest, but also the most useless building without a doubt." β
οΌοΌοΌ
"The most useless building?" Egger resisted the urge to snort in disdain, the dwarf in front of him may be friendly and easy to talk, but in this world where there is no concept of equality for everyone, the gap between his identity and his identity is too huge, and it is better to be cautious on the first day of acquaintance: "Do you know how big the Great Wall is?"
Tyrion glanced at Egg with a strange expression, and thought the Night's Watch was speaking in a strange way: "A hundred leagues long, seven hundred feet high, and wide enough at the top to allow twelve heavily armed knights to pass side by side...... As for how wide that is, I really don't know. β
The traverser nodded: "That's right, this is the official data given by the chief craftsman." But I bet you have never seen a wall a hundred leagues long or a 700-foot building...... The towering towers in the old town are also very tall, but there is still a gap between them and the Great Wall. If you have the chance, you should see it for yourself and measure it. But it doesn't matter if I don't have the chance, I can now give you an idea of what kind of structure the Great Wall is through a more intuitive calculation comparison. Iger said with unmistakable certainty, "Seven hundred feet high, about one-tenth of its width, assuming it is seventy feet wide." And now in front of us is the inner walls of Winterfell, the highest part of which is a hundred feet high and about ten feet thick. I've heard that your lords are incredibly intelligent, so did you know that the Wall of Despair is seven times as tall and thick as the walls of Winterfell, what does that mean?"
What does that mean?" Tyrion frowned, he was rarely asked, and after thinking for a moment, he understood what the other party meant: "This shows that the amount of materials required to build the same length of the Wall of Despair and the Wall of Winterfell is seven times seven, forty-nine times that of the latter. β
"The mind of an adult is really worthy of its name," Iger slapped the dwarf without a trace, "Then the Great Wall of Desperation is a hundred leagues long, what does this mean?"
......
The gnome's brow furrowed even deeper, and Jon Snow watched the two of them in confusion as they did their calculations, completely unable to interject. He may be better than the two in front of him combined, but he is not even as good as Tyrion in arithmetic, let alone Egger, who is highly educated in another world.
"Let me tell you, this means that if the Wall of Despair were tore down and rebuilt into a wall as high as the inner walls of Winterfell, it would be five thousand leagues long. This length could easily enclose the entire North, or separate the entire King's Road from King's Landing to Winterfell from the fields on either side, and the Great Wall weighed more than all the walls of Westeros combined. β
"But the Great Wall of Desperation is made of giant blocks of ice. The dwarf made a rough estimate and realized that the Night's Watch in front of him was not nonsense, but he still argued unconvinced: "The walls of Winterfell are made of stone. β
"The same volume of stone weighs about twice as much as ice, but given the difficulty and amount of work between building a 700-foot-tall wall and a 100-foot-high wall, I suggest that both sides be leveled. Egger quickly turned his brain and quickly pulled the topic back to his own line: "My lord just said that the difference between the wild people and us is only that we are on the north and south sides of the Great Wall, and I agree with this statement. To borrow your thoughts, can I say that the difference between northerners and southerners is only on the north and south sides of the neck?"
"Most of the people in the north have the blood of their ancestors in their bodies. The bastard had long forgotten the grievance of being "humiliated" by his uncle in the hall, and he finally found an opportunity to interject after listening like a fool for a long time.
"'Ancestors' means the first humans to arrive in Westeros, and it is neither an independent race, nor older than any other people. Tyrion corrected Jon's misconception, "Ethnically, the ancestors are very close to the Andals or the Roynars, and there is no essential difference, so the 'ancestry blood' is actually meaningless, not so much blood, but more inheritance and cultural beliefs. β
"Agreed. Iger agreed. "Lord Tyrion, I have learned from my review of the literature that the Great Wall was built in a generation, and that Brandon Stark, the 'Builder' of the Eight Thousand Years Ago, only built the stone pedestals of Winterfell and the Great Wall of Despair, the latter of which is an astonishing height of seven hundred feet, and was slowly piled up and raised by thousands of Night's Watch craftsmen over the course of tens or hundreds of years using large blocks of ice in the Ghost Forest Ice Lagoon. β
"Isn't the Great Wall made entirely of ice? Tilly raised an eyebrow. "It seems that I haven't read it carefully enough...... But it makes sense to think about it. β
"It doesn't matter what makes a CD. "I don't know anything about military affairs, but I also know that such a huge fortification, built up to the neck, can not threaten the north even if the southern princes have thousands of troops and horses." But the builders of the city chose to build it on the northernmost ...... Even if the first generation of builders of the Great Wall had their brains pumped, why did his children and grandchildren continue the project? Is it because the northerners have brain problems, or is there another reason?"
"Hmm......" the dwarf touched his chin.
"Moreover," Iger continued without hesitation, "it is recorded that at the height of the Night's Watch there were more than 5,000 soldiers stationed in Castle Black alone, and more than 10,000 combat troops in the entire legion, not counting the servant attendants...... That was 8,000 years ago, and the population of both inside and outside the Great Wall was much smaller than it is today, and the number of wild people living north of the Great Wall at that time may not have been as large as the night watchman. What is it that makes the people of the north build and increase the height of the Great Wall, while sending such a large standing army to guard it?"
