Chapter Seventy-Two: Wings of the Wind
The sun in the west was sinking into the clouds in the distance, and the small group entered a dilapidated village camp. It was a small settlement, like most of Kislev's villages, on top of a small mound of man-made earth, protected by a rammed-earth seven-foot wall and a trench several feet deep. The fields have long been harvested, and only the bare poplar forests swing their branches in the wind.
It's not that far from the battle line, in fact, not so long ago it was a battle line where fire and sword roared, and the vanguard of the Chaos Legion had advanced here. Many villages were burned to rubble, and villagers were killed or looted, but the small village was fortunate to survive, albeit in ruins. A month earlier, a group of scattered Chaos Kugan cavalry archers had attacked the small, impoverished village. Although they were repulsed, some of the livestock that had not had time to be collected into the fence were plundered, about a quarter of the grass roofs of the houses were burned down by rockets fired by the Kugans, and the whole village was desolate.
The elders of the village community received Hyde and the others with unexpectedly warm feelings, and the sight of the Wuguoer cavalry made the white-bearded sturdy old man very pleased. Because this elder was once a warrior of choice for Ugol, he was skilled in the use of long knives, horned bows and arrows, and arquebuses. One of the Elder's sons was also a serving Ugol warrior, who fought under a northern Duke of Kislev, far from here. Although the old man said that it was pride, Hyde saw the worry in his heart from his wrinkles and eyes, which was naturally human nature.
In fact, this village community is a village community of Ugol warriors, they are the professional military service class of the Kislev Kingdom, providing excellent light cavalry and infantry backbone for the Ice and Snow Kingdom that believes in the Holy Trinity, and every male villager in this village community has to learn martial arts since childhood, and bows and arrows and long knives are their inseparable relatives. Even women were mostly able to use muskets and spears, and there were no cowards in the village community of the Ugol warriors. This is also the reason why this humble little village was able to survive the raids of the Chaos Marauders, because they were not ordinary peasants, but warriors.
Eighteen villagers were killed in the Chaos Kugan attack, mostly elderly, female, and juvenile. Because the urgent levies on the front line have taken away the vast majority of young and middle-aged men, and many of them are no longer alive. In the tragic battle of the Naugolan Valley alone, the village lost a third of its young men, including the village's best warriors--- elder's eldest son, who was thirty years old. They died in the cold and rugged valley with His Majesty the White Tsar's army, their faces never to be seen by their loved ones again, and their heads may have been decorated with the spears and flagpoles of the Chaos Legion.
"Olga is my pride and Marusica's pride. She had met Olga at the annual Warrior Tournament, where she had won the championship, so he had the love of the most beautiful girl there, Marusica, and it was like a year ago, but that was twelve years ago. Ah, how quickly the years have passed!"
This voice of emotion came from the elders of the village community, who led Hyde and the others and several Uguol officers to the public cemetery in a corner of the village. Beneath the white wooden cross of the Holy Trinity are buried villagers who died not long ago, including the elder's eldest daughter-in-law. During the attack of the Chaos Kugans, the brave young woman knocked down several Kugans with a musket and a Kugan warrior who was about to attack the Elder from behind, before being shot by several arrows and dying of excessive bleeding, leaving behind a seven-year-old orphan girl. This is a sad thing for the elders, because she and her husband are the elders' favorite children.
"Marusica, she died bravely, and I know that her soul is now with my brave Olga. They love each other so much, may they be ...... Holy Trinity and immortal Spirit Bear Paradise for eternal life!"
Standing beside the simple cross of poplar wood, the white-bearded elder prayed in a deep voice and drew the Cyrillic cross. The old man's voice was a little shaky, and tears glistened in his deep eye sockets.
"May they live forever in heaven!"
The Ugol officers prayed, and Hyde did the same, Marshall crossed St. Sigma, Loren Sr. raised his sword solemnly, and Frey leaned down in the salute of the great god Thar.
"Noble Imperial Knight, have you ever seen Wind Wings? That is the pride of our Kislev, only one of the twenty Ugol warriors can be called Wind Wings, they are blessed by priests and war mages to sweep through the grasslands with wind magic, they are the most glorious warriors of our Ice and Snow Realm......"
Elder Whitebeard may have remembered something, he took Hyde's hand and muttered, probably a little too sad in front of the cemetery.
"En......"
Hyde didn't know what to say, because he hadn't seen the Winged Knight. Of course, old Loren and Marshall had told him about the Windwing Knights these days, and he roughly knew that it was Kislev's elite light cavalry, with eagle feathers painted red on their backs, and fighting with extra-long spears. But what should he say to the old man, Hyde understood the old man's hurt heart.
"My brave old brothers, I've seen Wind Wings, I've fought alongside them, and they're the pride of the Ice Nation. ”
Old Loren duly relieved Hyde of his life, his hand resting on the Elder's shoulder.
"My Olga is a wind wing, a proud guard wind wing. It is difficult for a commoner to become a wind wing, but by his courage and strength, he became a wind wing at the age of twenty, and it was the festival of our village community, ah, how much happy liquor we drank at that time! Five years later he was honored to be a member of the griffin regiment of His Majesty the Tsar, wearing a leopard's skin and a red ribbon, holding a flag gun and walking with the nobles on the red wall of Nakislevgrad, what a glory!"
The elder's voice grew louder, and the old man became agitated by the memories in front of the distinguished guests, and his long beard hanging down to his chest shook in the evening breeze.
"Well, I know that the Griffin Legion is the personal cavalry of His Majesty the Tsar, and your son deserves honor for it. ”
Hyde replied to the old man in a respectful tone, this is considered to be learned and sold, because the matter of the White Tsar and the Griffin Legion was just told to him by Marshall last night, this legion is composed of 1,200 people, composed of the most elite Wind Wing Cavalry and Guard Bear Knights, they are the swords and shields of the White Tsar's side, most of them are nobles, and commoners are very rare. It is indeed not easy for the old man's son Olga to become a member of this legion.
"Olga was on vacation before following His Majesty on the expedition, and the Griffin Legion only had the opportunity to visit her family once every two years. I remember that when the messenger's trumpet blew, it had only been seven days since he had been home, and both Marusica and Martha had hoped that he would stay one more night, and that he would have stayed a few more days, but I said that how could the glorious kingdom griffin legion be mother-in-law...... So Olga and I drank half a barrel of wine, and after lunch, he stepped on his war horse and went to the royal capital, which was also the last time I saw my Olga......"
The old man with the long beard couldn't help choking, the elder of the village community tapped the ground with his cane in a gaffe, everything was silent, the soldiers understood the elder's heartache, Frey shed tears, she probably remembered her father-in-law, the grief was the same. Hyde's heart also felt uncomfortable, this brave young man was a man of great affection.
