Volume 1 Fledgling Chapter 1 The Price of Growth
In the bright room, Aven was writing on a roll of papyrus, his face showing a look of distress from time to time, and his mouth muttering to himself, as if he was thinking about something.
Knock knock, a soft knock on the door interrupted Aiwen's thoughts, and an ethereal voice rang out outside the door, "Brother Aiwen, can I come in?" With Aven's permission, the door was gently pushed open, and a petite and cute figure crept in.
Ai Wen put the pen and paper on the table and turned his head to look at the door, where a young girl stood beautifully.
On the girl's slightly immature face, the light blue eyes flashed with a cunning light, and the delicate facial features matched with the fair skin, even Ai Wen was slightly distracted, and the pale blonde hair was tied behind him at will. The girl is dressed in a pale green long skirt, and the belt around her waist reflects the girl's graceful figure to the fullest.
"Brother, how long are you going to watch?" As if sensing Aiwen's somewhat fiery gaze, the girl's face was slightly red, she pursed her lips, and slowly walked to the latter's side.
Ai Wen retracted his gaze, and in the girl's whispered exclamation, he reached out and hugged the girl to his lap, pretending to be vicious and said, "Alice, tell me honestly, do you want to see someone who is wearing such a beautiful dress today?"
The girl snuggled up to Evan's body, snorted lightly, and said a little unhappily, "Brother, you are so busy every day. My sister just lives nearby, and you don't want to come, so my sister came to you, and you still have a wicked person to sue first."
Evan chuckled, acquiescing to his sister's words. With his palm brushing his sister's long hair, Evan couldn't help but pick up a few strands and play with them.
"Brother, what are you writing here, why can't I read it at all?" Alice asked in surprise as she looked at the papyrus on the table, which was densely covered with unfamiliar square words.
Aiwen's eyes swept over the table, the papyrus was full of Chinese characters, covering almost every aspect of daily life, from marching to governing the country.
"You'll find out later." Evan said with a smile.
Alice was obviously not satisfied with this explanation, and just as she wanted to say something, the voice of the elder was a little dissatisfied at the door, "Alice, why are you running to disturb your brother again. How old are you, why are you still clinging to your brother all day long like when you were a child?"
Hearing the sound outside the room, Alice's face flashed with a gloomy color, but she quickly pretended that nothing had happened, and got out of Aven's arms, and finally forgot to pay attention to the somewhat wrinkled long skirt on her body.
It didn't take long for a middle-aged man to appear at the door, the man first nodded at Aiwen, and then shouted at Alice with some displeasure, "Not yet."
Alice looked back at Evan sitting at the table with some reluctance, and then slowly walked out of the room. The middle-aged man said with some flattery, "I'm sorry, Aven. Your sister is like that, she always looks like she doesn't look good."
Evan looked at the middle-aged man expressionlessly, then at Alice, who had her head down, not knowing what she was thinking, and said calmly, "Don't worry, Uncle Abre. Sister Alice and I have a lot of fond memories of the past. She is always welcome to visit my home."
Abru agreed, and immediately left with Alice, across the wooden wall, Aven vaguely heard his voice, "How many times have I told you, go and meet the son of the Baron of Parles next door." Every time someone else comes to invite you, you still look reluctant."
"You're fourteen years old this year, and you'll be an adult next year, don't you know what to do now? Do you know how many people want to marry the son of Baron Parles?"
"People love you, but you don't even know how to cherish it. Aven will inherit his father's title and domain in the future, and if you can get on good terms with the son of Baron Palles, our family will be befriended by two barons."
"In the county of Middlesex, even Lord Earl will be polite to us, do you know how important it is to our family? What do you think about every day......?"
For his uncle, Evan didn't have any good feelings in his heart, and even if he had the chance, he didn't mind using some means in secret.
For as long as he can remember, Abru has come to his house many times, repeatedly hoping that his father will give him a title and a piece of land, and after his father sternly refuses, his uncle not only did not reflect on his own reasons, but complained in front of others, complaining that after his father became a baron, he did not even help his own family.
In order to satisfy his desires, he also took Alice everywhere to visit the homes of other powerful people, discussing marriages, hoping to climb other powerful people.
The magnates of the county of Middlesex laughed at him behind his back, but for his father's sake, they didn't make a fool of him in public.
Evan shook his head, no longer thinking about the clown, and instead pulled out a stack of papyrus from the cabinet, which was also densely filled with Chinese characters. Soon, he found the paper with Baron Parles' name written on it.
"Baron Parles......" Evan sneered, this baron is a typical smiling tiger, usually no matter who he meets, he is always smiling and happy, he always seems to be a generous and tolerant person, but behind his back, he is desperate to take revenge on those who make him unhappy.
It is rumored that there was a commoner in Barony Parles' domain who accidentally spilled vegetable soup on his shoes, but Baron Parles didn't care at all, and said in public that the shoes just needed to go back and wash them, and it would be harmless.
However, it didn't take long for him to cut wood illegally by civilians, and imprisoned the entire family of civilians, with the men tortured to death and the women used as slaves.
"This kind of person can be a nobleman, it's just an insult." Ai Wen crumpled the papyrus in his hand into a ball and threw it into the fireplace, "In the future, when I have a senior title, I will definitely purge these scum, how can I let them harm the people."
"Young Master Aiwen, the master asked you to go to the restaurant to dine together." The old butler stood outside the door and said respectfully. Evan put away the paper on the table, walked out of the room quickly, held the old man's arm, and said a little embarrassed, "Grandpa Morse, you can just let other people shout about this kind of thing, you don't need to go there yourself. Just wait in the restaurant."
The old butler smiled and patted Ai Wen's arm with his dry hand, and said slowly, "Thank you for your concern. I can still walk and do things, I can do it myself, I can do it myself, I can't do it in the future, I don't have a chance to do it even if I want to."
Hearing this, Ai Wen felt a little uncomfortable in his heart, when his father first got the title of baron before, he was busy and often couldn't see anyone, and the old housekeeper beside him accompanied him, as if he was treating his own grandson and giving him love.
In recent years, the elderly have become older and more fragile.
Although his father assigned servants to take care of his daily life, and asked him to leave all the specific affairs of the housekeeper to his son, and allowed the family to live in the lord's mansion all the time, no one could guarantee how long the old man would last.
"Young master, you don't have to worry about me, an old fellow." As if sensing Aivan's low mood, the old butler Morse said with a smile, "I can meet the old master and the young master, and this life can be considered perfect. Even if I am called by the Lord, I have no regrets, and I believe that my Lord is merciful and will let me see the young master's wedding and the birth of an heir."
Evan opened his mouth, and he wanted to say that if my lord was really merciful, he should let a good person like you live forever, but in the end he swallowed the words back from his mouth.
"That's right, young master. As I mentioned before, you are almost an adult, and the affairs of the territory will gradually come into contact, and the marriage will also be prepared." Old Butler Morse reminded softly.
"The young master also needs to be prepared, and he may become very busy in the future. If you have someone you like, even if you don't tell the master, you have to talk to me, an old fellow."
A shadow flashed in Ai Wen's mind, nodded helplessly, and sighed silently, some things seem destined to be regrets in this life.
Walking into the restaurant, Evan glanced at it, only to see his father and mother sitting there, and did not see the figure he hoped to see.
"Abru, they went back, saying there was something else going on. Hmph, who doesn't know what's going on in his head." Baron Ellus, who sat at the top, knew what his son was thinking at a glance.
"I know that you and Alice have played since childhood and have a good relationship, but I also want to remind you that Abru and his sons are typical villains, and you will inherit my position in the future, and you must stay away from their house so as not to be deceived by the trap."
Evan nodded, indicating that he understood. Ayrus looked at Aven and knew that his son still had something to think about, but he didn't continue to preach.
The atmosphere in the dining room was dull for a moment, and Baron Ellus sighed for a long time and looked at Evan again.
"Recently, the Earl sent someone to the door, saying that his daughters were also coming of age, and were considering a marriage partner, and asked if our family wished. The Count told me privately that since I am the most meritorious baron under him, and you have been clever since childhood, he is willing to give us the choice."
"I have also met several daughters of Lord Earl, Lord Earl's youngest daughter is thirteen this year, a year younger than you, both in appearance and intelligence, if you want, next time I take you to meet Lord Earl, I will let you meet by the way."
"Yes, everything is at my father's behest." Evan only felt that his mouth was full of bitterness, maybe this was the price of growing up, but how many of the children of the powerful in the Middle Ages could be with the person they liked? It's nothing more than an exchange of interests.
"If you don't want to, I can talk to the Earl, but it will also have a negative impact on our family. With your ingenuity, you should be able to think of why the Earl would choose our family first."
The first half of Ellus's words not only shocked Morse's old butler and his wife, but even Evan looked at his father in surprise, a little doubtful that he had just heard something wrong.
"Father, if you refuse, the Count will definitely be upset, and you will ...... then" Elrus interrupted Aven's words with a wave of his hand, he looked at his son and said calmly, "Lord Earl will not take back my baron title because of this matter, not to mention that you are my son, the only son of my Elros, and I am your father, and it is my father to do something for my son."
Evan slowly stood up and bowed to his father, "Thank you, father. However, there is no rush in this matter. I can meet with a few young ladies first, and I can tell you how it turned out to be another matter. This will also reassure the Earl, and it will be much better than an outright refusal."
Seeing that Evan agreed to meet, Ellus also quietly breathed a sigh of relief, and he said calmly, "But Evan although we nobles also have a precedent for marrying commoners, but that means that everything in the future can only rely on you alone, and there is no other person or force to rely on, so you have to think clearly."
After a pause, Ellus added, "Tomorrow you will patrol the territory with me, and you will also start dealing with the affairs of the territory. It shouldn't be very difficult for you." Evan agreed without hesitation.
At night, Evan sat alone on the bed, looking at the bright moonlight outside the window, and many thoughts flowed through his heart......
