Chapter 31: The University of Constantinople
As the "New Rome" built by Constantine the Great himself, Constantinople not only has a transcendent position politically, but is also culturally the second largest cultural center in the eastern Mediterranean after Alexandria.
Since the Arab occupation of Alexandria, Constantinople has become the cultural center of Christendom, and many of the ancient Greek texts, the writings of Plato and Aristotle, and the writings of the Christian saints are stored in the royal collections of the city.
As a result, Constantinople was home to a large number of scholars, the most prominent scholars of the era were either in Italy or Constantinople, and the most important aspect of the Renaissance movement was the re-study and recognition of ancient Greek texts.
Especially after Constantine XI won the war against the Ottoman Sultan, it attracted scholars from all over Europe to study in Constantinople.
Long before sending troops to Wallachia, the emperor set aside an area in the city for scholars to stay, so that they could better discuss knowledge, and because of this, a plan slowly took shape in the emperor's heart.
As soon as he returned to the capital, Constantine summoned the members of his cabinet to discuss the university.
After the proclamation, everyone rushed in, and after saluting, they naturally sat down in the seats prepared for them by the emperor.
"Ladies and gentlemen, the main purpose of this cabinet meeting is to discuss the possibility of establishing a university in Constantinople."
Constantine got straight to the point, and his long military career made him develop the habit of being vigorous and resolute,
"Put our collections in the university for students to study, provide them with room and board, and invite scholars to teach."
Prime Minister Calvo hesitated a little and asked cautiously,
"Your Majesty, many of the precious classics in the royal collection are unique books, and they are placed in the university for people to read at will, isn't it..."
Although he didn't say it explicitly, the emperor heard what he meant,
"They are allowed to copy, but the solitary copies are to be read under supervision."
Seeing that the emperor proposed a solution, Calvo no longer hesitated,
"I think it's feasible to establish a university that not only increases our international influence and influence among academics, but also allows us to get more officials to fill the vacant positions everywhere."
After all, studying under the emperor's nose, the supervision of the university is still very easy, and there is no need to worry about cultivating a group of anti-state students.
"Very well, it just so happens that there is a lot of vacant land in Constantinople, just pick a piece and build a house."
"Your Majesty, regarding the question of professors and students, how should our university recruit students?"
Chancellor of the Exchequer Chavez questioned,
"There are no restrictions on international scholars, as long as you have a good impression of the empire, you can come to the university to read the classics, but they must be translated into Greek, and if you want to read the original, you must become a professor,"
"If you want to be a university professor, you need to have other conditions, such as teaching in Greek on a daily basis, being loyal to the emperor, not spreading ideas harmful to the empire, and so on, and the Ministry of the Interior has made a charter for this."
The Emperor pointed at Flores, and said,
"In terms of students, it is mainly aimed at the aristocracy."
This is normal, only the aristocracy has the money to educate, Europe has always been very advanced in the education of children, such a world-famous university, as long as there are places, it will definitely not be missed.
"The first batch of cadets will gather the nobles under the age of twenty-five in the empire, and this batch of cadets will charge a symbolic fee."
Seeing that the Minister of the Interior kept recording, the Emperor added,
"Greek and Roman history are compulsory and examined every six months."
Although he knows that it is the seedlings that are promoted, the emperor can't control so much, even if it subtly affects a person, it is a great victory, not to mention that these nobles will also affect the people at the bottom, at least it is better than doing nothing.
"Your Majesty, do you need to show your generosity and kindness to the common people?"
Calvo took a sip, but didn't pay much attention to it, after all, ordinary people want to get higher education? Rich?
Constantine, however, seemed to think of something, got up and walked around, and looked at Chavez,
"What do you think? Chavez"
Chavez didn't think that the emperor was really thinking about it, for their group of nobles, it was really unthinkable to let commoners enter such a university, but out of respect for the emperor, Chavez thought about it seriously,
"If it's funded by the state, there shouldn't be any problem."
Chavez quickly came to a conclusion, as if he was afraid that the emperor would decide to implement it immediately as soon as he slapped his head, Chavez hurriedly added,
"But the Empire's finances don't allow for large-scale funding of students."
"What if a hundred a year?" The Emperor asked again,
"If you follow the training standards of the nobles, I'm afraid it won't work, and it will also cause dissatisfaction among the nobles." Chavez said with embarrassment.
"What if only Greek and Roman history were taught?" The emperor continued to ask,
"That's no problem, these two courses don't need much funding, we only need to take care of the students' food and housing." Chavez replied with a serious face.
The Emperor nodded, approved of Chavez's statement, and moved on to other issues,
"The duration of the school was every two years, and the students who came out were assigned to the administrative units of the empire, and those who were able to arrange administrative work, and those who were less able were arranged to be preachers and propagandists to promote Greek culture."
"The aristocracy is held every four years, and they learn a few more aristocratic etiquette, muskets, mounted archery, etc., and the Ministry of the Interior looks at the arrangement."
Under the current conditions, it is not necessary to set up a separate Ministry of Education, and it is sufficient for the Ministry of the Interior to be in charge of it at the same time.
Constantine looked at his cabinet members and said firmly,
"Ladies and gentlemen, the promotion of the Greek language is our national policy, and other languages can only be dialects, and from this day forward, all the work of the empire is carried out by Greek, understand?"
"Yes, Your Majesty."
……
"Why is Your Majesty so anxious to promote the Greek language? Aren't you afraid of causing discontent among the population? ”
Laszlo asked, puzzled, he did not see the importance of a unified language, in fact, no one cared about this in this era, in France, people said that the north and the south were simply two countries, that the language and culture were not interconnected, and this situation did not improve until the nineteenth century.
"If you don't understand the people, how can you understand the needs of the people so well?" Constantine asked rhetorically,
"On this expedition, you also know the situation in various places, the whole country is in ruins, at this time, because of the language barrier, how many confusions have been caused?"
"Foreign officials can't understand what the people are saying, and they even have to be accompanied by an interpreter, and local officials are prone to bending the law for personal gain and bullying others."
"There are many different languages in Serbia, and in Serbia, there are so many different languages in a village on the top of a hill, how can the administrative work be carried out?"
The more Constantine knew about the country, the more frightened he became, and when there were only Constantinople and the Moria Peninsula, most of his subjects were Greeks, and now he saw that the variety of nationalities and languages in the country was simply dizzying.
This is also the reason why later generations know that the promising kings of Europe are proficient in many languages, such as Alexander II of Russia and Franz of Austria are proficient in several languages, because there are too many ethnic groups in the country, the language is not understood, if you understand their language, you can understand what they want, and you can better manage the people.
