Chapter Ninety-Six: Start Working!

The cemetery of Wenfeng Pagoda was discovered when Suizhou built the "Wenfeng Pagoda also built a community".

The old houses in the Wenfeng Pagoda community were built in the fifties and sixties of the last century.

It is also because they have become old and dilapidated, which will be sold by the government to real estate developers, and all of them will be demolished and rebuilt.

At that time, during the mechanical construction on the construction site, a grave road was dug out directly.

It was also because of the appearance of this tomb road that the project was suspended, and the local archaeological institute intervened to carry out archaeological investigation and drilling on the construction site.

In this exploration, dozens of tombs of different ages were found in the location of the original "Wenfeng Pagoda Community" that had been demolished.

The first to be discovered were the three tombs that had been dug up at the construction site.

They are two Eastern Zhou tombs and a small brick tomb in the Ming Dynasty.

The numbers are M1, M2, and M3.

This newly identified Wenfeng Pagoda cemetery is part of the Yidigang cemetery group on the east bank of Suizhou irrigation.

The Yidigang tombs were explored and discovered as early as the nineties, but the Wenfeng Pagoda had not been noticed by the local cultural relics bureau before.

After all, this area was full of houses before, and it was impossible for the archaeological team to explore the underground.

However, the tomb of Marquis Yi of Drum Pier is only 5,100 meters away from here.

The early Zhou cemetery in Yejiashan, discovered last month, is also 9,100 meters northeast of the Wenfeng Pagoda cemetery.

It can be said that these tombs are related to each other.

And the specifications are all large.

Therefore, even if the official excavation has not yet begun, both the city and provincial leaders speculate that these two cemeteries must be related to Zeng Guo.

......

Meimei ate after a kick-off banquet.

The next day, a large army from the Institute of Archaeology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences prepared to carry out rescue excavations.

The mobile house where they live is very close to the construction site, at the very edge of the construction area.

At eight o'clock in the morning, Chen Han got up from the bed.

In Hubei at the end of January, the temperature was even below freezing.

Even if there was a small sun blowing at him, after getting up from the warm quilt, Chen Han couldn't help but shiver.

Compared with the straightforward dry cold in the north, the cold of about minus 1-5 degrees in the two lakes area is more torturous.

When I sleep at night, the upper half of the place where the small sun shines is warm, but the lower half is cold and moist, and I can't cover it hot, it's like ice and fire.

After patting his face and forcing himself to wake up, Chen Han turned over and got out of bed, put on his clothes and walked to Zhuang Yunpeng's bedside.

"Senior Brother Zhuang, get up and go to work!"

After patting Zhuang Yunpeng's quilt and waking him up from his dream, Chen Han walked to the corner again, picked up a washbasin, opened the door and walked out of the mobile board room.

The oncoming biting cold wind immediately gave Chen Han a heavy blow, and he rarely sweared, but it was rare for him to burst into a foul mouth.

"Damn, it's cold!"

Hubei and Hunan, a place sandwiched between the north and the south, have the characteristics of both the north and the south.

If winter in the south is a magical attack, winter in the north is a physical attack.

Then the winter in Hubei is double penetration!!

But no matter how cold it is, you have to get used to it, and the excavation project will not be arranged according to the weather, let alone the season.

Holding the washbasin, Chen Han hurriedly walked into the hot water room, and after receiving a basin of hot water, he washed up on the washstand outside the door.

Coming and going, there are constantly other colleagues holding the washbasin to get hot water for washing.

It's a bit of a university dorm room life.

This is the condition of the mobile board house, if you want to wash or take a bath, you have to go to a special public bathroom, and don't think about the independent bathroom.

After a simple wash, Chen Han almost adapted to the cold, and after taking a few steamed buns and fritters in the canteen area, he carried them in his hand and walked towards the excavation site while eating.

The mobile panel house was not even a kilometer away from the discovered tomb M1, but he walked to the excavation site in five or six minutes.

At this time, there were already a group of colleagues from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, who were drawing exploration squares, strata, and surveying maps.

In the eyes of many people, archaeology is just digging up the soil and then taking out the cultural relics.

At most, it is to be careful and careful when taking cultural relics, and use a brush and bamboo sticks to clean up the soil.

It looks like anyone can do it.

But in fact, "digging up the soil and taking things out" is the behavior of tomb robbers.

Archaeological excavation is a systematic matter, which requires a lot of preliminary work and is very troublesome in the excavation process.

Maybe in the documentary, the five-second video of cultural relics extraction that appears, in the eyes of the audience, is a person reaching out and taking the cultural relics out of the soil.

But in fact, before the extraction, countless arguments, preparations, and observations must be made to ensure that the extraction process will not lead to the secondary destruction of the cultural relics.

And some extreme cultural relics, such as silk fabrics and bamboo slips mixed in the soil, are not what field archaeologists say can be extracted.

Don't even dare to touch it,

It is necessary to invite some technicians, such as professional restorers from the Jingzhou Cultural Preservation Center, to fly to the archaeological site to extract it in person.

For some important tombs, the soil that may have been dug up has to be sifted back and forth several times!

It has to be a manual sieve!

Sift until the soil is only the size of gravel, and make sure that no artifacts have been missed, and then the excavation is completed.

Because some small pieces of cultural relics, or fragments of cultural relics, only one or two centimeters in size are common, and it would be a pity if they were missed.

The coffin of Tomb No. 168 of Phoenix Mountain, it took only ten days for the large cultural relics to be extracted.

However, the follow-up screening of the sediment in the coffin took two and a half months.

Archaeology is a work that requires slow work and meticulous work.

Therefore, even if it is a rescue excavation in a hurry, even if everyone from the Institute of Archaeology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences gave up the Spring Festival holiday and rushed to start work.

But the burial chamber was not dug directly as soon as the construction began.

Instead, according to the process, little by little, the mapping is carried out, and the exploration party is opened.

It is estimated that it will take several days just to map and explore.

But this doesn't mean that Chen Han can't see anything.

Because the Wenfeng Pagoda tomb group is a rescue excavation, the construction unit has dug the tomb in advance.

Therefore, Chen Han squatted next to the construction pit and could see a general situation of the grave pit.

The geological condition of the cemetery can be observed from the stratigraphic sections that have been excavated at the construction site.

The construction unit dug out a total of five strata, from the top layer of cultivated soil, black brown soil layer, reddish-brown soil layer, sandstone and sand layer, to the red sandstone layer.

The two excavated tombs were excavated in layers of red sandstone.

The shape is a classic pit tomb.

It's just that the tomb has been destroyed a bit seriously during the construction.

The fill of Tomb M1 has been largely excavated, and there is not much left of the burial chamber, only a thin layer of soil remains.

Next to Chen Han is a pile of filled soil dug up, which is mainly red and yellow five-flower soil, but there are also a small amount of green paste mud and charcoal particles.

As early as the Eastern and Western Zhou Dynasty, the ancients knew that the sealing effect of green paste mud and charcoal particles was very good, one could isolate oxygen, and the other could absorb humidity.

In fact, when the Chinese people were in ancient times, their research on physical chemistry was quite deep, which was no worse than the Greek culture of the same period.

It's just that the road went crooked, which is a pity.

"Xiao Chen, here?"

Kong Jianwen, who had already arrived at the scene to direct the work, came over and said worriedly after seeing Chen Han: "The situation in Tomb M1 is not optimistic. ”

"The on-site construction has damaged the grave very much."

"The contents of the tomb have been rudely dug out by the excavator as sand, and now they are all piled up in the open air."

Kong Jianwen stretched out his hand and pointed to a large mound not far away, around which some archaeologists were already cleaning up.

"This mound of sand is the fill excavated from the location of Tomb M1, and it is full of various burial artifacts that need to be cleaned urgently."

"Xiao Chen, you can also go and help!"
