Chapter 55: Steam Technology
Juan followed Muradin Copperbeard to a dark, wet but unusually spacious cavern.
Here, a patchwork of massive machinery scurries out in the cavern, white smoke rattling exhaust pipes and mist hovering on the ceiling.
Juan sees a strange female dwarf, busy in front of a giant difference machine.
The dwarf was about 1.4 meters tall, wearing a top hat with goggles around his head, and a long dress with an intricate and delicate twist of Victorian characteristics.
She had no beard on her chin, and her tight leather waist guard made her breasts look rather turbulent, looking no different from a short human.
"Brian Copperbeard, my sister." Muradin Copperbeard proudly introduced Juan to Juan, "We are the genius scientists of the Copperbeard dwarves. β
Then Muradin Copperbeard shouted, "Brian Copperbeard! Come and meet Your Excellency! β
"How many times have I said it!" The female dwarf snapped and closed the notebook in her hand, and walked over menacingly, "Don't call me Brian Copperbeard!" β
"But you're Brian Copperbeard!"
"No, I don't admit it! Anything that has been imposed on me without my consent, I will not admit it! β
"But whose name wasn't imposed by their parents? Who has ever seen a parent ask for the baby's opinion when they name their newborn baby?! β
"Someone else is someone else, I'm me! I'm Lolita! Lolita Lolita Lolita!! β
Juan looked at the bickering sibling pair in amazement.
At this time, Muraddin Copperbeard realized that with a leader by his side, it was not the time to quarrel.
He said helplessly: "Whatever you want, anyway, in my heart, you are Brian Copperbeard." β
"Lolita!"
"Alright, let's stop this pointless quarrel.
"Sister, let me introduce you to you, this is the successor of Soma, the head of the Pioneer Station, and the current supreme ruler of the beautiful planet, the head of state, His Excellency Juan."
"Hello, Your Excellency," the dwarf respectfully bowed to a standard Victorian court curtsy, "Lolita salutes you. β
Lolita's complex classical court etiquette, Juan had seen in the movie, but never studied it seriously.
He didn't know how to return the salute, so he simply nodded.
"Hello."
Perhaps Muradin's Brass saw Juan's embarrassment, or perhaps he had seen it many times.
He digressed the topic and said, "Sister, show Your Excellency the FΓΌhrer the scientific and technological achievements of our dwarves." β
"Okay, this way, please."
Lolita led Juan and his party to a showroom.
Juan saw that on the table in the middle, there was an object in the shape of an oxygen cylinder, which seemed to be able to be carried on his back.
Lolita explains, "This is the heart of Dwarven technology, the portable steam engine. β
As she spoke, she filled the upper part of the "oxygen cylinder" with water through a valve sealed with a rubber gasket.
Then, she pulled open the mechanism at the bottom of the "oxygen cylinder", pinched an apple-sized, reddish-glowing crystal with iron tongs, and put it in.
Soon, the needle of the pressure gauge on the bottle turned.
Juan saw that the pointer crossed the green zone, which represented safety, towards the red zone, which represented danger.
But Lolita and Muradine Copperbeard watched calmly and didn't make any moves.
Juan felt a little furious, but he didn't want to lose face in front of the humanoids, so he forced himself to watch the needle of the pressure gauge enter the red zone with a serious face, and headed towards the end.
"Woo~"
Just as the hands were about to reach the end, the vent valve opened automatically, and steam whistled out.
So the needle of the pressure gauge was returned to the safe area.
Then, after the vent valve closes automatically, the hands continue to turn towards the end point.
Juan's heart relaxed.
"Great design, but what's the use of this thing?"
"It provides power, and power helps the machinery work."
Lolita carried the portable steam engine behind her and carried Juan on.
She ignored the "woo~" sound of the steam engine from time to time, and explained to Juan the various machines on the booths on both sides of the passage.
"This is a steam hammer, this is a steam saw, this is a steam percussion drill......
"They can provide much greater strength than individual dwarves, and can easily crush ore and sawing down large trees.
"Of course, it can also be used in battle."
When they came to something that resembled an indoor shooting range.
Lolita picked up what appeared to be a bronze tubular object with a flare.
She attached the rubber tubing of the portable steam engine to the connector at the back of the object, and shoved a fist-sized lead ball into the tube through the flare.
"It's a steam gun."
Lolita pointed to the pressure gauge on the steam gun.
"Using steam pressure, you can shoot a lead bullet out, and then the kinetic energy carried by the lead bullet will shatter the enemy's head."
Lolita explains, raising her steam gun to aim at the wooden rake, but does not pull the trigger to release the pressure.
Juan saw that the steam pressure had been increasing and that the pointer had entered the red zone.
But Lolita still didn't pull the trigger, perhaps waiting for the moment when the pressure reached its maximum in order to show Juan the maximum power of the steam gun.
But she missed it.
"Woo~"
The safety valve releases the excess steam into the air, and the needle of the pressure gauge suddenly returns to a low position.
"Hell, I didn't get the timing right!"
"Let me do it, sister, you are a scientist, there is no need to be yourself to be a good warrior."
Muradin-Copperbeard took over the entire set-up, including a portable steam engine and a steam gun.
The moment the gauge pointer reached the end, he pulled the trigger.
"Bang!"
The flare of the steam gun spewed out high-pressure steam nearly a meter long.
The fist-sized lead bullet drew an afterimage and flew towards the wooden rake 50 meters away, accurately breaking the center of the wooden rake, leaving a terrifying hole there.
"Beautiful!" Juan applauded.
The power of this steam weapon should be enough to deal with orcs.
And it only consumes water, and both lead bullets and crystals can be used repeatedly, making it environmentally friendly compared to gunpowder weapons.
It just takes a bit of skill to use, but this can be solved with training.
"It would be nice if the shooting frequency could be a little faster." Juan said with a long look.
"If you can't do it fast, the pressure will increase too fast, and the safety valve will not have time to release the steam, which will inevitably lead to an explosion in the end."
Lolita led Juan to a large machine.
It looks like a steam boiler underneath it, and a rotating drum on top of it.
"Steam machine gun."
Lolita gave a brief introduction, placing three fiery red crystals into the bottom of the steam machine gun.
Soon, the steam power drove the drum to rotate rapidly.
Lolita opened the huge magazine at the top, and fist-sized buckshot fell one after the other.
These spherical lead bullets are accelerated by the drum and finally ejected, similar to the baseballs thrown by a training baseball transmitter.
"Bang Bang ......"
I don't know if it was Lolita's improper operation, or if the weapon was not good in the first place, and the spherical lead bullet bombarded indiscriminately in the wooden rake area 50 meters away, and most of them did not hit the wooden rake.
But its rate of fire of nearly 250 rounds per minute is more than enough to compensate for this small shortcoming.
