Section 36: Mercenaries
The word "fate" first appeared in the world of Rigal eleven centuries ago.
Before the rise of the original doctrine of the White Holy Church, the Lamanites, who practiced animistic polytheism like many places, were the first to come up with the term.
People include many mysterious things that they are unable to understand, and all things that are too large and powerless to resist are summed up in a simple word.
The pessimistic Lamanites, even at the time of the fall of the empire, felt that all this was predestined.
It is true that the Lamanites of those days could not perceive the storms brewing in many places, and many events, including the fall of the empire, seem to modern historians to be traceable - but it has to be said that there may really be such a thing as fate.
At least when Henry and Mira entered Prospel through the city gates, and then asked the locals to find out where the Mercenary Guild's headquarters were, but were stopped on the wide street, the sage and Lori must have had such a word in their minds.
"Yo......" Benny, whose expression was twitching, limped in front of them.
"Did you escape at a critical moment, you lowly poor devil, like those damned mercenaries. Benny, who was behind him with a dozen or so breastplate-clad West Valier guards, gritted his teeth at Henry.
"Do you know how much money Lao Tzu spent to redeem himself? This money could have been left unspent, as long as you shitty things could go up and buy time for me to leave. Without asking, Benny revealed the reason why he is so good here.
"Tuye, Sidus. Glancing left and right, the wide street was full of pedestrians, but Benny, who had the upper hand, confidently ordered the guards behind him to attack Henry in Sivalier.
He smiled triumphantly, and the guards behind him did not draw their weapons, and surrounded the two of them with their bare hands, while Benny taunted in the lingua franca: "I advise you to give up resistance, poor devils, this is Sivalier, and if you mess around, the guards will come immediately-"
"Bang-" The severed front teeth flew out with blood and saliva, and the first of Sivalier's guards rolled his eyes and fell.
The sound attracted the attention of passers-by, and many shop owners poked their heads out of their shops to watch.
"You ......" Benny, who thought he had the upper hand, was stunned, but then he noticed that one of the guards had quietly walked behind Mira.
At least kill this lowly slave. Benny put away half of his words and glanced at the few remaining guards behind him, the Roans were just as unpopular as Sivalier, and even if they were killed in the streets, the guards would turn a blind eye for a few dollars.
He thought so, and glanced again, but Henry did not move, as if he did not notice.
Benny couldn't help but smile again, but before it could fully bloom, he saw the girl crouch down and avoid the guard's grip, then slap the West Valier guard on the chin as she stood up with the palm of her right hand upward.
"Click!" the teeth that were gritted so hard under the external force that his own tongue was almost broken.
"Ahh
"Poof-thump-thump-" The Sivalier guard rolled his eyes and fainted, while Mira gasped and turned to look at Henry.
"Well, you have memorized all the training, but it's not good to hesitate for a while to think about countermeasures, and the time left for you to face a real opponent in actual combat will be very short. Ignoring the remaining ten Sivalier guards who surrounded them, Henry explained carefully to Mira, and the girl nodded earnestly, her little face seriously contemplating some of the mistakes she had made.
"You, you wastewood. "Henry, even a Lorian Lori can't beat these well-equipped guards make Benny feel embarrassed, more and more people are watching, the guards are afraid that they will notice this side later, the blonde boy gritted his teeth, and is thinking about asking the guards to pull out their weapons and do nothing - at most they will lose a little more money, the laws of this country are different from Avenella.
"Ahh
The sage put his hand on the hilt of the great sword behind his back and said in a calm tone, "I know what you're thinking. β
"You're thinking that we have the advantage in numbers, and with so many people watching, this man doesn't dare to pull out his weapon. β
"To be honest, I don't know what I'm going to do. Henry smiled and said, "Because I am surrounded by so many heavily armed people now, I am very nervous." β
His tone was as calm as if he were talking about spruce tea in the afternoon.
"But this, it's a Kramer, it can easily slash a guy in half from shoulder to waist, and you're right within its range. The expression on the sage's face looked more and more like a demonic smile, and Benny was drenched in cold sweat and wanted to retreat, but at some point, the crowd of onlookers who had been densely surrounded made him unable to retreat.
"Now, it's time to ask yourself a question. β
"I'm going to try my luck and see what it would be like to get this nervous man to draw his sword?" Henry smiled, then tightened his grip on the hilt.
"Do you think you're lucky enough, young man. β
β...... Damn!" Benny sweated coldly as the condescending sage stared down on him, and he cursed loudly before turning around and limping away. The guards surrounding the two were stunned for a moment, and then saw that their master had already run away, so they had no choice but to pick up their fainted companions and leave in a hurry.
"Digge, Digger, Kousasspa," shouted the guards, who had dispersed from the crowd, hurried in, richly dressed and well-trained, armed with spears and swords at their waists, comparable to the noble cavalry of Avenella.
"Kosasspa?" The head of the guard could tell at a glance that the central figures of the incident were Henry and Mira, and that the sage, who did not look much different from the West Valijes, had been taken by him as a local mercenary, so the head of the guard asked him directly in West Valiya what had happened.
"Tubabian, Mosion. Henry smiled and explained to him that nothing had happened, and seeing that the guards had arrived, there was nothing to see and the crowd of onlookers scattered around. The head of the guard looked the sage up and down, then at Mira on the side, and finally shook his head and sighed.
"Don't make such a fuss in the future, young man. The sage's standard Sivalier seemed to convince the head of the guard that he was a native and said to him, while Henry smiled and added, "Thank you, sir." Then the other man waved his hand and turned to leave.
β...... You just fooled him?" said the passers-by and the shopkeeper, who had resumed their respective business, ignored the two of them, and Mira looked up and gave Henry a deep look.
"As the strongest country on the West Coast, the people of Sivalier have a very serious sense of superiority. They look down on people from any other country, and the likes of the National Guard are more than that. So to save trouble, yes, I convinced that Mosion that I was a Sivalier. Henry shrugged, and Mira gave him another blank look.
"Mr. Sage is such a terrible adult. β
Henry touched her little head, and then the two led the horse to the vicinity of the Mercenary Guild.
But before entering, Henry searched left and right for a while, and then found the stable where the horses were stored on the opposite side of the street.
Prospel is a capital city where land is at a premium, and its proximity to Vasha, the largest and busiest port on the West Coast, is far more prosperous than Assrinier. Therefore, just by depositing two horses, Henry consumed the price of two silver coins of Ella. If they want to live here, I am afraid that all the more than 100 gold coins left on their bodies will be quickly consumed if they are not careful.
The headquarters of the Mercenary Guild is a very large wooden and stone structure.
Such structures can be found everywhere in Prospel, where the West Vallierido is a plain, and the only nearby place where stone can be mined is the cliffs of the Prospel Strait, which bears its name, in the distance.
However, the chalk limestone produced here is very fragile and difficult to mine, so many oak trees were planted and the houses were made of oak as the main structure, and then the wooden frame was filled with stone and covered with stucco.
The most recognizable feature of a typical wood-and-stone building is the clearly visible wooden X-frame on the exterior wall, with its dry, smooth stucco walls, which also has a unique romantic aesthetic in the Sivalier style.
The interior of the guild hall is also quite spacious, and the two of them attracted a lot of attention as soon as they walked in.
One of them was so striking that Henry was stunned in place.
Mira tugged at the corner of his coat, and the Sage let out a long sigh.
"Today is really a day full of fateful encounters. He said this, and the man sitting at the wooden table in the hall stood up. Her long single ponytail swayed slightly, and Mira furrowed her eyebrows.
'White?Roanβno. The girl's blue eyes gradually widened, and the man who came to the door had long hair that glistened like metal in the sunlight.
"Silver ......," Lo Ann muttered, while the woman across from her smiled and walked towards Henry.
"Long time no see, Henry. She said this, her voice crisp but full of power, and the sage sighed, and then nodded as well: "It's been a long time......
The exchange between the two seemed to end there, and the silver-haired woman turned her head to look deeply at Mira, then at Henry.
The sparkle between her bright eyes flowed, and she seemed to think of something, but she didn't say anything, just smiled lowly.
"You're still the same. She said, and Henry shrugged, "You too, but why are you in such a place." β
Once again, the conversation was beyond Mira's comprehension, and she looked at the two non-talkative fellows in a daze, and for a moment the girl felt as if there were two henries talking to her.
"There are not many people in the ice and snow, can't I miss the warmth of the world?" the woman shrugged, and then seemed not to intend to stay here any longer, turned around, said goodbye and left straight away.
"Uhh
"Ruby Badge...... Mercenaries of the highest rank. Mira muttered, who was staring up at Henry blankly, and the Sage smiled at her and reached out to touch her little head.
"Hello, we're here to register. Walking down the long hall to the wooden counter, Heng said to the female usher in a lingua franca.
The staff of the Mercenary Guild come from all over the world, so the official language of communication is usually the same as that spoken by more people.
"Uh-us?" the female staff member was stunned, because of her height, she could only see the top of Mira's head from the counter seat.
"I'm sorry. Henry leaned down and picked up Mira, and the girl glared at him disapprovingly, and the sage continued, "Me, and her." He stretched out a finger and pointed at the petite Luo An Da Lori and said, the staff was stunned again, and some scattered mercenaries and adventurers sitting in the hall resting also looked at him.
But no one made a mockery, because they were still immersed in what had happened before.
"Ah...... Uh, okay, okay, please register your name here and then go in through the door on the left and take the test. The female staff skillfully wrote down the names of the two men on the thick book, and then carefully explained the process of the test, Henry nodded, and when everything was finished, Mira patted his arm and motioned to put herself down.
"Please pay the participation fee of 10 denno, 5 denno per person, for a total of 10 denno. She said this, and Henry pulled out a common copper coin, and the woman retrieved two iron coins.
"Then good luck. She said this, and then seemed to stop talking.
"If you want to ask me about my relationship with the person just now, it's just an acquaintance. The sage replied aloud, and the other man nodded, as if he had let out a sigh of relief.
The interior of the hall became lively again, and the afternoon passed quickly amid the noise of people.
The test is conducted separately for two people, and the lowest level of the green card test is fairly simple, and you can qualify simply by meeting the corresponding physical fitness standards.
Needless to say, it only took him ten minutes to easily complete the various target hits and obstacle dodging in the instructor's stunned expression, and then spent another three minutes listening to the short civilian man talk at length about a lot of do's and don'ts that everyone knew was just a formality, and then he went out and waited at the door.
After waiting for a full twenty minutes, a tired Mira walked out with a dirty dirt and weakly holding the one-handed sword in her hand.
"Passed. She waved her hand at Henry, and the Sage stepped forward and rubbed her little head.
There are not a few people who have obtained the qualification of green card mercenaries at the age of eleven, and they don't know that Mira has only been training for more than 20 days now, and the staff has not taken it too seriously, so they have drawn a big circle on the book with the names of the two people.
It would take two more days for the badge to be claimed, but as soon as the two of them turned around, as if to see them passing, a group of four mercenaries, or a small group of adventurers, leaned over to talk to them.
"Did you both just pass?" The group were quite young, generally around 20 years old, two men and two women, a one-handed swordsman in terms of equipment, two archers, and a young woman who looked like magicians.
Henry glanced at it, her robe was dark blue, and the gold threads on the cuffs were two, which meant the second stage of the first order. All of them have green badges, and it looks like they are newcomers who have only recently become mercenaries.
"Well, yes. Henry nodded, and the male one-handed swordsman who spoke smiled slightly: "My name is Alain, and this is my friends Benois, Jeanne, and Ann. He pointed to the male and female archers and the female magician.
"As you can see, our team has some problems in terms of configuration, and there are some insufficient personnel on the front line to contain them...... "Alain scratched his cheeks with a little embarrassment and said: "Our ambition is to become a hunting mercenary group, but after several attempts like this, the end is that we can't contain the prey and are run away by it or are chased, so we want to seek companions......"
"At least!" As soon as Henry opened his mouth, the young one-handed swordsman exclaimed eagerly, "at least can we complete this task together, it is not very difficult, as long as the cooperation is perfect, there are not too many problems." β
"Those experienced mercenaries don't want to pay attention to us, so they can only guard here like this......" Alan sighed helplessly, Henry tilted his head to look at Mira, and Lo An nodded his head.
"Okay, then please advise, my name is Henry. The sage held out his hand.
"My name is Mira. The white-haired big Lori also said seriously.
