Chapter 14: Fate

The conversation was interrupted when the commander and another man came to the gate.

The man was short and stocky, with deep-set eyes and a short beard on a broad chin. Both men were already wearing hazmat suits, with huge bags of dry food hanging from their backs.

The commander silently examined Su Mengfan, then put a large black bag next to Su Mengfan's feet, and then walked to the tent set up by the army.

Su Mengfan unzipped the bag, reached in, and took out a set of black work pants that were the same as those worn by the commander and his partner.

There is also a special gas mask with a mask capable of covering the entire face, next to two filters, as well as a pair of high-top boots.

The most important thing is a new Kalashnikov punch with a laser sight and a foldable metal stock. Sharp guns. This is a special weapon.

Su Mengfan had only seen a weapon similar to this once.

This is the weapon that the elite Lufthansa unit carries when they patrol the line in a railmobile. At the bottom of the package is a long-handled flashlight and a helmet with a fabric surface.

He didn't have time to get dressed up, for the tent's curtain was lifted and Thatch entered. He carried a zippered, retractable bag in his hand.

They looked at each other dumbfounded.

Su Mengfan was the first to react and understand the situation.

"You're here? Are you our overseer? You're here to help us find what I don't know? He asked mockingly.

"I know what it is." Thatch roared, "I don't know, how are you going to find it." โ€

"I don't know," Su admitted, "I was told I'll get an explanation later...... So, here I am, waiting. โ€

"And the information I've been given is that a 'clairvoyant' is being sent to the surface, expecting him to find out where to go.

"Then I'm the clairvoyant?" Su Mengfan snorted.

"The elders believe that you are gifted and that your life is special. The covenant mentions a prophecy that a young man who is destined to find the secrets hidden in the Great Library. He will find the caste that we have been trying to find for 10 years. The elders are convinced that this person is you. โ€

"Is that the book they were talking about?" Su Mengfan asked.

Thatch didn't speak for a long time, just nodded.

"We expect you to perceive it, and not everyone can see this book. If you're the 'destined young man,' you don't have to run around piles of papers, the book will find you," he said.

His eyes looked Su Mengfan up and down, and then added, "So, what information did you exchange from them?" โ€

It's useless to hide the truth, the only thing Su Mengfan is unhappy about. Thatch was supposed to bring him the message and use it to fend off the invasion of {Ghoul} and thus get the message of {Invisible Watcher}.

But he knew nothing about the danger or the content of the agreement between him and the members of the committee.

He briefly briefed Thatch about the protocol and explained that he was trying to stop the catastrophe from happening.

Thatch listened intently as he finished speaking, then stood silent, motionless. When Su Mengfan left the tent, he was still thoughtful.

The Commander and the bearded Stalker are fully armed and ready to go, gas masks and helmets in hand.

His partner was now carrying a light machine gun, and the commander was holding a punch that was exactly the same as the one Su Mengfan had ever gotten. A sharp gun, with a pair of night vision devices around his neck.

When Thatch walked out of the tent, he and Su Mengfan glanced at each other proudly, and then Thatch blinked, and the two began to laugh.

They all look like real stalkers now.

"We're really lucky...... Novices spend two years training as stealth heroes to fetch firewood from the ground before they go on important missions. But you and I, our days are so comfortable! Thatch whispered to Su Mengfan.

Stealth Hero ...... The word was a foreign word to the Russian language, but it was all the rage.

In the early years, the term was reserved for people who were so poor that they were forced to go to abandoned military shooting training grounds, dismantle bullets and bombs that had not exploded, and sell the dismantled brass to those who bought non-ferrous metals.

It was also used to be used to refer to peacetime weirdos who crawled around in sewer pipes.

The guys who got their name by this name all had one thing in common - their professions were extremely dangerous, often dealing with the unknowable, strange, and ominous.

In the subway station, the few daredevils who have the courage to venture to the surface are known as stealth heroes.

Dressed in protective suits, with gas masks and blackout glasses, they were armed with heavyweights when they went out on the ground to find what people needed โ€“ military supplies, equipment, replacement parts, fuel...... There are hundreds of people who dare to do this.

However, only a handful of them make it back alive โ€“ and those who come back alive become priceless. They are worth even more than past Metro employees.

There are all sorts of terrible things waiting for these daring people on the ground - lethal rays, and ghoul-like monsters that have been alienated under the rays.

There is still some life on the ground, but in terms of the general concept of human beings, those things can no longer be called life.

Each stealth hero becomes a living book of legends, they become gods worshipped by others, and everyone, young and old, has a great deal of respect for these heroes.

In a world where all land and sky have been lost, where words like "pilot" and "scientist" have become meaningless words, children's dreams are to become stealth heroes.

They want to go their own way, wearing shining armor and receiving the admiring and grateful gazes of hundreds of people, climb up, explore the surface, go to the kingdom of the gods, fight monsters, and bring fuel, military supplies, light and fire to the people undergroundโ€”in fact, to bring them life.

The commander looked at them disappreciatively, but said nothing. He gestured to them to follow.

They walked to the arch of the passageway, then up the stairs and stopped at the next cement brick wall. There's a door, reinforced in detail to bolster the defenses.

The Stalker greets the sentries and motions for them to open the door.

One of the soldiers got up from his seat, walked towards the gate, and forcefully pulled the door open. The heavy steel door slid smoothly to the side. The commander let the other three pass first, and he saluted the sentry before following out.

Behind the door is a short buffer zone about three meters long, which connects the wall to the pressurized hatch. There were two heavily armed soldiers and an officer, on guard. Before giving the order to raise the iron barrier, the commander decided to give a brief explanation to the novices.

"Listen, don't talk for the rest of the way. None of you have ever been on the ground, have you? Never mind...... Give me a map,"

He said to the officer: "Before you reach the antechamber, please follow my footsteps, do not wander around, do not look around, do not speak. After leaving the vestibule, go straight through the turnstiles, or your legs will be gone.

You must follow me closely, I don't want to see you go it alone. Then I'll go outside, and Tyne is there," he said, pointing to the bearded stalker.

"Will stay there and guard the antechamber of the base. When there is no danger, we have to quickly come to the street and turn left quickly.

It's not getting late, so don't use flashlights while you're there.

We can't get people's attention.

Do you understand where the Litestone Palace is?

It's on the right, but as soon as you step out of the subway you'll find a fort on the building.

Don't look at the Liteswood Palace, don't look at it under any circumstances! Whoever dares not listen, I will explode his head. โ€

It's true, and it seems to be true about the Liteswood Palace, and the rule that stalkers are not allowed to look at it under any circumstances.

Su Mengfan thought in surprise.

Suddenly, something surged through his mind, bits and pieces of thoughts and images...... Restlessness emerges, and then calms back.

"We're going to the big library, all the way to the gates and the steps, and I'm playing as a striker. If the stairs are safe, Tyne will keep an eye on them, and we'll go up.

Then we put Tyne on guard and get him up. Don't stand on the stairs and talk, and if you see danger, use a flashlight to show you. Try not to shoot unless it is really necessary, the sound of gunfire will alarm them. โ€

Who are they? Su Mengfan couldn't help but ask.

"'Who'? What do you mean? The Commander replied, "Who do you think you'll meet in the Great Library?" {Librarian}, of course!. โ€

Thatch swallowed hard, and his face turned pale.

Su Mengfan looked at him, then at the commander, and felt that there was no time to pretend that he knew everything anymore.

"So, who is that?"

The Commander raised his eyebrows in surprise, and his bearded partner put one hand over his eyes. Thatch looked at the floor.

The commander stared at Su Mengfan for a long time, and finally made sure that Su Mengfan was not joking.

He replied coldly, "You have to act on your own, and the important thing to remember is that if you look them in the eye, you can stop them from attacking you." Look straight in the eyes, understand?

Don't let them go around behind you...... Of course, our operation was from {Hayabusa Station} to the ground, so there is still some distance to the Lenin Library, and we must listen to the instructions when we are on the way, and do not act on our own.

That's all. Let's go! He put on a gas mask, then a helmet, and then gave a thumbs up to the sentries.

The officer walked over to the main control switch, opened the pressurized cabin, and the steel-cast barrier wall slowly rose up and began to move.
