Chapter 60: The Kind
As they walked into the station, the light marble covering the walls was no different from the ones on the walls of the {Turgenev station}, but there were so many smoke stains and oil stains on the walls and ceiling that the stone was no longer visible.
There is no stain on the marble here, and it's hard not to appreciate it.
People left this place a long time ago, and there are almost no traces of their life here.
The station is in good condition, and to people's surprise, it doesn't seem to have been flooded and there has been no fire.
If it weren't for the darkness and a layer of dust on the floor, benches and walls, you'd think that within a minute, passengers would start pouring in one after another, or that a train would be coming into the station after a melodious signal bell.
The situation here has remained almost unchanged over the years, and Khan described it with bewilderment and awe.
There is not a single pillar in the {Setayehu station}.
The low arches are cut into wide intervals by thick marble.
The team's flashlights didn't have enough light to dispel the darkness of the hall and illuminate the opposite wall, so it looked as if there was nothing on the other side of the arch, as if that was the end of the universe.
They walked through the station fairly quickly, and contrary to Khan's fears, none of them expressed the desire to stop and rest for a while.
People are looking fidgety, and more and more people are talking about the need to get out of here as soon as possible and get to a place to stay.
"Do you feel it? People's moods are changing. Khan watched quietly, holding up a finger as if trying to sense the direction of the wind.
"We do have to go faster, their skin will feel this, and no less than I can feel with my mystical powers. However, there are things here that prevent us from moving on. Wait here for a while......"
The Khan carefully pulled out the map he called the "navigation map" from his pocket, and after standing everyone still, he extinguished the flashlight, took a few small steps, and disappeared into the darkness.
As he walked away, a person in the crowd, slowly, as if with great effort, walked up to Su Mengfan's side.
He was so timid that at first Su Mengfan didn't recognize it as the bearded man who had threatened him at Sukharev's station.
"Listen...... We've stopped here, and it's not great. Tell him that we are afraid.
We have a lot of people, but anything can happen...... Damn tunnels, damn stations.
Tell him that we have to leave. Did you hear that? Tell him...... Must. With that, he turned around and hurried back into the crowd.
The last "must" made Su Mengfan tremble.
This word made Su Mengfan feel very uneasy.
He took a few steps forward, closer to the crowd, and could hear their conversation, when he suddenly realized that his good mood was gone.
There had just been a small band playing a rousing march in his head, and now it was empty and still, and he could only hear the whistling wind echoing dejectedly in the tunnel ahead.
Su Mengfan quieted down. His whole body seemed to have frozen, nervously waiting for something.
He sensed an inevitable change in his plans β and he was right.
In an instant, it was as if an invisible shadow rushed above them, making people feel cold and uncomfortable, and the peace and confidence that had accumulated in their hearts as they walked through the tunnel were now swept away.
Now Su Mengfan remembered Khan's words - this is not his mood alone, his mood is changed by the environment, not by him.
He nervously turned his flashlight at the crowd around him: an ominous premonition oppressed him.
The light, dusty marble shone faintly in front of him, and the dark curtain under the arch did not recede in spite of the flickering light of his lamp.
This confirmed their suspicion that behind the arch seemed to be the end of this world.
Su Mengfan couldn't control himself, he almost ran back into the crowd.
"Come to us, brother," said a man he had never seen before.
Apparently, they are also trying to keep the battery of their flashlight.
"Don't be afraid, you are human, we are one kind, and when something like this happens, people have to come together. Don't you think? β
Su Mengfan willingly admitted that something had happened, and because of fear, he became extremely talkative, and he began to discuss his concerns with the people in the team, but his mind kept thinking about Khan's whereabouts.
He disappeared more than ten minutes ago and has not been heard from from him.
He himself knew that one could not walk into this tunnel alone, but had to go in with the crowd.
How could he just get in like that, how dare he ignore the unwritten rules of this place?
He didn't simply forget about it, he just decided to believe his own wolf's sense of smell, but Su Mengfan couldn't believe it.
Although Khan has spent three years studying this tunnel, it doesn't take that long to know the most basic rules here:
Never walk into a tunnel alone.
However, before the Khan appeared silently beside him, and before the people were saved, Su Mengfan did not have time to think about what his protector might encounter ahead.
"They don't want to stay here for a moment, they're scared. Let's keep walking, quick! Su Mengfan proposed, "I also feel that something is wrong here......
"They weren't scared yet," Khan assured him, and looking from behind him, Su Mengfan suddenly realized that his firm but hoarse voice was trembling.
Khan continued, "You were not afraid, and I was afraid. Remember, I don't say this lightly. I was scared because I was stuck in the haze of the station.
The 'navigation map' doesn't let me take the next step, otherwise I'd have definitely disappeared. We can't move forward. There must be something ahead...... But it was too dark for my line of sight, and I had no idea what awaited us there. See! β
He quickly held the map up for them to see.
"Did you see that? Take your flashlight and shine it on it. See the route from here to Chinatown Station! Don't tell me you didn't see anything. β
Su Mengfan carefully inspected the small part on the picture, and his eyes hurt in a hurry, but he still didn't understand what was abnormal, but he didn't have the courage to admit this to the Khan.
"Are you blind? Really can't see anything? The route below is all black! Further on, it's all about death! Khan whispered, slamming back the map.
Su Mengfan stared at him cautiously, feeling that Khan was once again like a madman.
Zhen-ah had told him about walking into the tunnel alone, about anyone who survived the tunnel going crazy out of fear - had this already happened to Khan?
"We can't go back!" Khan whispered.
"We managed to get over when there was a good mood there, but now the darkness is coming from there and a storm is brewing.
Now the only thing we bear does is walk forward, but not through this tunnel, but through the tunnel parallel to it. Hey! β
He shouted to the crowd, "You are right, we must move forward, but we must not follow this route, otherwise destruction and death await us!" β
"So, how do we move forward?" One of them asked, confused.
"We had to cross the station and go through another parallel tunnel β we had to do that. As soon as possible! β
"Oh no!" One of the people in the crowd shouted. "Everybody knows that if the tunnel is clear, we won't go in the other direction β it's a bad sign, and we're going to die! We're not going to go through the tunnel on the left. β
People walked back and forth anxiously, and a few agreed.
"What did he say?" Su Mengfan asked Khan.
"Obviously local folklore," he said with a frown.
"Damn it! I don't have time to convince them, and I don't have the strength to do that...... Listen! β
He said to them, "I'm going to go through that parallel tunnel, and those who believe in me will follow me." Others, goodbye, forever...... Let's go! He nodded to Su Mengfan, picked up his heavy backpack, and climbed to the edge of the platform.
Su Mengfan hesitated and was stunned.
On the one hand, the Khan knows far more about these tunnels and subways than humans can comprehend, and on the other hand, this cursed tunnel has immutable laws, and you can only get into it with the crowd, because this is the only hope of success......
"What's going on? The bag is too heavy? Give me your hand! The khan stretched out his palms to him and knelt on the ground.
Su Mengfan really didn't want to see his gaze at that moment, there were a few times before he was very afraid to see the flicker in this man's eyes, he was afraid to see the Khan's crazy eyes. Does the khan know that he rejected not only the warnings of the people, but also the caves of the tunnel itself?
Is it enough to feel the essence of the tunnel?
The "navigation map" he was referring to, the place on the charred map, was not black.
Su Mengfan was willing to swear that it was a faded orange, the same color as the other threads. So the question is, who is blind?
"What are you not waiting for? Don't you know that if we delay any longer, we will all die? Your hand! For God's sake, find your hand! Khan shouted loudly, but Su Mengfan slowly took small steps away from Khan, lowered his head, and approached the complaining crowd.
"Come here, brother, come to us, there's no need to bother with that idiot! You are safer to stay here! "He heard people say.
"Fool! You will perish with them! If you don't care about your life, then at least think about your mission! β
Su Mengfan plucked up his courage and finally raised his head and stared at Khan's wide eyes, but there was no madman-like light in them, only despair and fatigue.
Su Mengfan began to doubt himself, and he stoppedβjust then, someone quietly walked up to him and gently pulled him.
"Let's go! Let him die alone, he just wants to drag you to the grave with him! Su Mengfan listened to the man.
He felt the meaning of the words heavily, he slowly understood them, and after a moment of resistance, he let the man lead him towards the crowd.
