Let's talk about which is more important, virtue or ability
Which is more important, moral character or ability? The most popular response is: both are important. Of course, this is true, but if you have to choose one or the other, how do you choose? In chapter 243 of "Sailing the World", Wang Hou and Zheng He have a dialogue in the harbor of Sumatra, which is the author's thinking on virtue and ability.
The reason why Wang Hou and Zheng He talked about the topic of De and Neng was because of the secret weapon, before, Wang Hou borrowed the "Ten Flavors of Tianxiang Needle" from the Lily Fairy and injured the buffalo representing the eldest prince in the game, and then after the crowd dispersed, Zheng He asked Wang Hou: "Lily Fairy, is it the bewitching woman called by the general yesterday to ask her to bring any 'flower mist' to the capital?" β
Lily Fairy, presumably everyone is no stranger, the author in front of the "talk about flower poison" specifically talked about her and her secret weapon. Wang Hou introduced: "'Flower mist' is also made by the lily fairy, after igniting can release mist, people will be poisoned after smelling, without her antidote, the whole body will itch and die within three days." However, I think that although it is vicious, it eliminates the need to fight and kill, which is a good way to control violence, and there is still room to make up for it, unlike ordinary swords, which cannot be recovered after killing. β
After listening to Wang Hou's answer, Zheng He agreed: "What General Wang said is that there is no good or bad martial arts and weapons in the world, the key depends on who uses it and where it is used, and good people use it in good places, which is to suppress evil and promote good; When a bad person is used in a bad place, he is doing evil. The real viciousness is not the martial arts weapon, but the person who has the martial arts weapon. β
Zheng He's words are simple, Wang Hou also thought about it, only to hear Zheng He say again: "Why are the martial arts secrets and magic weapons fighting to the death on the rivers and lakes, but I don't know that these things are lived by the virtuous, and the unvirtuous, even if they get it, they will only attract the curse of heaven and bring bad luck, so once they participate in the competition, they have lost their qualifications." β
With these remarks, it is not difficult to see that Zheng He still puts "morality" first, and once he participates in the competition, he has lost his qualifications. At this time, Wang Hou asked: "Doesn't that mean that Prince Hani has lost the qualification to become a virtuous king by participating in the struggle for the throne?" β
Zheng He muttered: "This can't be compared, the core of royal power is to benefit the world, so not everyone can take the throne." Virtue is important, but the ability to govern the country is even more important, otherwise the people in the world can't even guarantee their livelihoods, where will there be peace? Virtue is the guarantee of eating a good meal; Yes, but it is a guarantee of food. β
Zheng He's words are not contradictory, he believes that if only individuals are involved, virtue comes first; And when it comes to groups, energy comes first. There is naturally a reason why he said this, that is, Zhu Di took advantage of the Battle of Jingjing to seize the throne from his nephew. So he said: "Twenty-two years ago, when I was not yet thirty years old, I participated in the 'Battle of Jingjing' with the Holy Lord, endured countless hardships, survived countless tribulations, and killed countless people. At first, many people thought that this was a rebellion, that it was his uncle who robbed his nephew of the throne, but the real reason was that Emperor Jianwen at that time listened to slander and was worried that the Holy Lord would bring him a threat and wanted to kill the Holy One! If you don't start the battle of martyrdom, the Holy One will not be able to live! Twenty-two years have passed, you see how powerful our Ming Dynasty is to catch up with the Tang Dynasty, and the Yongle Prosperous Era will surely shine for thousands of years! β
Zheng He's generous rhetoric made Wang Hou's heart surging with him, and he said the reason why he wanted to go to the West: it was a senior master who asked him to "sail the rivers and lakes and promote morality." This is exactly the central idea repeatedly expressed in "Sailing the World". Zheng He praised it after hearing it, and he thought: sail the rivers and lakes and promote morality. Morality is a kind of moral standard, but it is a kind of ability, in other words, if a martial artist can't abide by the morality of the rivers and lakes, the higher the martial arts, the more it is not a good thing, and it will not do any good to the martial arts. ββIn this sense, martial arts should put "morality" in the first place.
