Chapter 151: Darkness and Silence
In the dark room, there was only Zachary Taylor's heavy gasps.
The butler cautiously opened a crack in the door from the outside, wanting to come in to see what was going on, but he yelled "Get out!" He was so frightened that he quickly closed the door and didn't dare to come in again.
β¦β¦
After a long time.
"I left you with such a good situation, but you ruined it like this!" Zachary Taylor sighed and said.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Taylor!"
"Huh!" Cary Taylor smiled coldly and said, "You had the foresight to know that the situation on the battlefield in Mexico was not good, so you ran back ahead of time!" β
"Mr. Taylor, you have misunderstood me, I am by no means afraid of death!" Davis said: "The reason why I rushed back desperately was to ask you to send troops to Mexico as soon as possible. As long as we can get an army together as quickly as possible and march into Texas before the rainy season comes, all of this can be saved! β
"Ask me? Davis, are you getting something wrong? I'm only the leader of an opposition party, not the president, so you should go to Polk. β
"Mr. Taylor, only you can help meβto help this country! If the Mexican War is lost, the United States will face great trouble, not only will it lose Texas, but the western part west of the Mississippi River will also become the pasture of the Indians, and even the British and French will pounce on us like hungry hyenas! β
"Tut-tut," Zachary Taylor said with a sneer, "I can't see that you are really a patriotic gentleman!" β
"Mr. Taylor, I ......"
"Davis, if you really love this country, you should take care of your family first, instead of pleading here with an old man like me! Poor Sarah, since you abandoned your seat in the Senate and went to Mexico to fight, her eyes are almost blind from crying! β
"I'm sorry, Mr. Taylor, I'll take good care of Sarah in the future, I'll be good to her, you trust me - but now, Mr. Taylor, Mexico is in danger and needs your support and help even more!"
"I said, I'm not the president, what can I help you? Do you want me, a 60-year-old man, to put on my rifle again, and follow you back to the Yucatan Peninsula on a slave ship to fight? β
"That's not what I meant, Mr. Taylor!" Davis said: "The reason why I came to you in the first place is not only because you are Sarah's father, but more importantly, because you are Zachary Taylor! Everyone knows that you are an invincible general, with unparalleled prestige, even President Andrew Jackson has complimented you, and now all the Whig MPs are rallying around you, and at least a third of the Democratic members are convinced of you β you are not the president, but you are now more influential than the president! When this country is in danger, only you can turn the tide! β
In the dark room, there was silence again.
"But, Davis, I'm not the president!" Zachary Taylor said:
And so the silence fell again.
β¦β¦
"I beg you, Mr. Taylor!"
Davis's voice rang hoarsely, and with a slight excitement, the silence was broken.
"The current American Federation is like a developing young man who needs to be nourished, and any little malnutrition will cause him irreparable defects in the future!"
"Mexico is a piece of meat that it has to eat in its stomach!"
"Without this, the future of America does not know what it will look like - but I'm sure it will not be a healthy, strong child!"
β¦β¦
"Mr. Taylor, I beg you!"
After another long silence, Davis's tone became more agitated.
"At this time, we need to let go of partisanship and prejudices! Both the Democrats and the Whigs should join hands and think about this country together! β
"With all due respect, since the midterm elections, Congress has vetoed all the president's proposals, and the president has vetoed all congressional proposals, which is not normal!"
"No normal country would be like us, full of chaos and quarrels!"
"The officials are corrupt and depraved, they abuse their power for their own personal gain, they are openly in collusion with the bankers in New York! They plunder the property of the country even more ferociously than our enemies! β
"The parliamentarians are not only blind, but they also have no shame in standing up for their own interests! Congressmen in Springfield would like to buy a Springfield rifle for each person, Congressmen in Virginia even preach that cotton can be eaten in order to sell it, Congressmen in Ohio want to build a railroad across the Atlantic, and Congressmen in Missouri even want to propose a referendum to join the Indian Union! β
"Merchants are also digging up the foundations of the country! It's been 20 years since the Indian Relocation Act was enacted, but you see, you can still see these Indians in New York, Philadelphia, and even Washington, D.C., and have they migrated? It's been over 50 years since the Indian Exchange Act was enacted, and damn it, it's even as old as this country, but the Indians can still buy what they want β the Rio Grande in Mexico is not alone, and there are so many merchants in Massachusetts, Virginia, and Wisconsin who are helping the Indians! β
γ
"The country looks like it's thriving, but it's actually full of moths and worms!"
"If we fail to take decisive measures at this time, not only will the country be damaged by this, but we, as soldiers of the American Federation, will really feel uneasy!"
β¦β¦
Davis monologue into the darkness for a long time, but there was no response from the other side.
It was only after his eyes adjusted to the dark light that he could still see the huge black shadow opposite him, letting him know that Zachary Taylor had been listening.
He felt like a one-man performer on a Broadway stage, putting on a botched performance without any audience appreciating.
- "Smack! Syllable! Syllable! β
There was a slow sound of applause in the darkness!
"Well said, Davis!"
"I now finally understand why my daughter chose you, how could a young girl who is not deeply involved in the world not like a young man who is passionate, righteous and eloquent? And this young man is not bad-looking! β
"Just a few questions I'd like to ask you-"
"When you say official corruption, do you mean Army Commander Winfield? Or Secretary of State Buchanan? Or someone else, do you dare to give me an exact name? β
"Are the few rat-eyed parliamentarians you are talking about, what kind of law are they violating? Or do you think their votes are fake? Or does the Davis family not need to deal with them anymore? β
"Are the businessmen you are talking about digging into the foundations of the Federation the brothers William and James of Procter & Gamble? Or that old guy from Vanderbilt? - Don't talk about the Rio Grande Shipping Company, in which your own brother also has a 10% stake! β
"As for what you mean by giving up party struggle, do you mean that I should give up party struggle? Or should Polk give up partisanship? β
"Huh?"
