Chapter 35: Chaos
Bastia was not large, with a population of only a few thousand even before the Northern Legion was stationed, so Lawrence and Trafali quickly moved the city around.
However, to their strange surprise, they never found the camp where the 4th Infantry Battalion was stationed.
Even at an intersection in the center of the city, there were three signs pointing to the camps of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Infantry Battalions, but the 4th Infantry Battalion was missing.
Seeing that it was getting darker and darker, and that Bastia was about to impose a curfew soon, Lawrence had to stop a passing soldier and ask:
"Soldier, please tell me where the 4th Infantry Battalion is heading."
The soldier glanced at Lawrence and Trefali's cuffs, and saw the two officers in front of him, and immediately stood upright, and replied:
"Sir, the Fourth Infantry Battalion is not in the city, but on the outskirts of the north of the city."
"Not in the city?"
Lawrence looked at Trefali suspiciously, and the other party shook his head in confusion, he was also the first time to come to the Northern Legion.
According to Lawrence's observations, there are still a lot of open spaces in Bastia, so that the fourth battalion will not be moved outside the city because of lack of space, and even the vacant houses are enough for a battalion of soldiers to live.
So thinking about it this way, I am afraid that there is something else hidden within the 4th Infantry Battalion.
Trevary's face was a little ugly, and he also thought of this layer, and after a silent glance with Lawrence, he motioned for the soldiers to leave.
"What do you think?" Lawrence lowered his head and pondered, although he expected that Pauly would not be able to hand over the elite of the Northern Legion to him to command, but after such an experience, he still had some bad premonitions.
Trefali nodded in agreement and said:
"It's strange that I rarely heard about the Fourth Battalion when I was in Ajaccio."
Either way, the two of them had to go to the camp to find out.
The two hurriedly rushed to the north of the city, and after asking the surrounding soldiers about the specific location of the camp, they led the black horse that came and carefully shuttled through the woods at night.
Bastia was already a bustling city, and the outskirts of the city were even more desolate, the woods seemed to have never been tended by a forest ranger, and the wild weeds and shrubs were almost impassable.
I don't know how long Lawrence and Trefary walked, but when they began to suspect that the soldiers were pointing the wrong way, they finally saw a few rays of fire not far away through the woods, which were undoubtedly campfires in the camp.
"Thank God we finally found it, otherwise we would have to sleep like monkeys in a tree."
Major Trefarli patted his chest lightly, breathed a long sigh of relief, and said.
However, Lawrence's expression was still very solemn, and he said solemnly:
"If this is really the location of the Fourth Battalion, that's not good."
"Huh? What do you mean? Major Trefali was stunned, not understanding Lawrence's words.
"The Genoese fortress was just north of Bastia, and it stands to reason that this camp should have served as an outpost. However, the two of us approached the camp without any shredging, and no scouts spotted us. ”
"Shhhh Indeed, this is not a case for the camp that is at the forefront of the camp. ”
Major Trefali suddenly realized, and then his expression immediately became as solemn as Lawrence's.
There is only one piece of information revealed by such a detail, and that is that the combat effectiveness of the 4th Infantry Battalion may be very worrisome.
Lawrence pushed aside the dense bushes and walked towards the camp.
I saw that in a spacious open space, dozens of marching tents were erected horizontally and irregularly, saying that they were tents, but it was more like sticks being stuck in the soil and a few rags were put up.
There were no fences around the camp, squirrels and hares roamed between the tents, and the camp smelled of excrement everywhere, and even in Lawrence's eyes, one of them was taking off his pants and finding a random clearing to start excreting.
There was apparently no curfew here, and it was already late at night, and there were a large number of topless men gathered around a table full of cards and coins, shouting loudly, as if they were playing some kind of gambling game.
If it weren't for the Wehrmacht uniforms scattered on the clothes poles outside the tent, Lawrence would not have believed that this was the home of the Fourth Battalion.
"Oh my God, is this a colony for wanderers?" Major Trefarly's face was even more shocked: "Even the bandits' lair is neater and more orderly than here. ”
"Hmph, I guess the Genoese called and thought it was a gathering of ruffians nearby." Lawrence sneered, he was already standing at the edge of the camp with Trefali without hiding, but no one even noticed the two of them.
"Three, three, three... Damn it! How is it seven! ”
A soldier sitting at the wooden table licked his lips and flipped through the hole cards, and when he found that they were not the cards he wanted, he cursed, and then reluctantly threw two silver coins into the pile of coins on the table.
Tonight it was a bald fat man who was in charge, and the disgusting fat was piled up tightly, and when he saw more and more coins on the table, he couldn't help grinning, and continued to beckon:
"Come on, come on, there's still no play, card blackjack!"
Suddenly, a voice was heard in the crowd of onlookers.
"I want to play a game."
The fat man was stunned for a moment, this voice was very unfamiliar, he had never heard it in the camp, so he looked up.
I saw Lawrence standing at the gaming table, unhurriedly pulling out a pistol and filling it with gunpowder. Seeing the fat man stunned in place, Lawrence smiled and said:
"What's wrong? I want to take a gamble too. ”
"You... You're a major?! The fat man hurriedly stood up from the table in a panic, and the soldiers around him hurried up to watch, accustomed to lawlessness, and they just wanted to see what fun they had.
"What's wrong with the major, can't you play?" Lawrence put the pistol on the table, sat down with a smile, looked at the fat man and whispered.
"It's... Haha of course, of course. The fat man only thought that Lawrence really wanted to play two games, and hurriedly squeezed out a smile and asked:
"Sir, what's your bet?"
"My bet? This one. ”
Lawrence said, picking up the pistol on the table and holding it in his hand.
"Ah, what a beautiful pistol, sir, I'm sure it's worth a lot..."
The fat man looked greedily at Lawrence's pistol, rubbed his hands and said.
However, before he could finish speaking, he was directly interrupted by Lawrence.
I saw Lawrence raise his pistol, aim it at the fat man's forehead, and say with a smile:
"No, my bet is your life. I win, you die, I lose, you live, deal the cards. ”
"What?!"
Not only the fat man, but even the onlookers were in an uproar, with stunned expressions on their faces, not knowing what the strange major meant.
"Your Excellency... Don't, no kidding haha. The black muzzle of the gun was pointed at his forehead, and the fat man had already broken out in a cold sweat and said tremblingly.
"What? Don't deal cards? If you don't deal cards, you will lose overtime. Lawrence said casually.
The fat man raised his arm and wiped the cold sweat from his forehead, and opened his mouth to say something, but he couldn't say anything in fright.
"Unfortunately, the time has come."
In the fat man's ears, only these last words were heard, followed by the explosion of gunpowder, and then, he was already in a blur of flesh and blood, and he fell to the ground beyond recognition.
After the gunshots, it was definitely the quietest moment in the camp of the 4th Battalion, and every soldier froze in place, holding his breath, as if time had stood still.
Only Lawrence stood up silently, turned the pistol in his hand, glanced at the crowd, and asked in a cold voice:
"Does anyone else want to make a bet with me?"
