Chapter 83: Treatment (Part II)
Lawrence followed Pauly to the door of a quiet two-story mansion in the northeast corner of the Doge's Palace.
Standing in the doorway stood two armed guards in bright red uniforms, which Lawrence had the impression that none of the Corsican armed forces were in this style, apparently Pete's own bodyguards.
Lawrence glanced at the guard at the door, and from this detail, he also could see that Paulie really attached great importance to Pete's visit.
Guests who normally stay in the Governor's Palace, even if they have their own escorts, are not allowed to be brought into the Governor's Palace, as such behavior is a blatant expression of distrust of the security of the Governor's Palace.
And Pete's guards can not only enter the Governor's Palace, but even walk in the palace with guns, it seems that Poly did give a lot of preferential treatment to Pete and his party.
Paulie greeted the guards at the door, and then led Lawrence into the mansion.
Walking into the room and closing the door, Lawrence casually took a look at the dΓ©cor of the room, which was distinctly in the style of the English court, very similar to the one he had seen in the movies.
And this house is obviously an Italian Renaissance style building on the outside, Lawrence glanced at Pauly, and it is estimated that Paulie deliberately changed the interior decoration for Pete.
In addition to Pete and a few servants in charge of living, Captain Morris also lived here, and when he saw Lawrence and Paulie enter the door, he stood up with some surprise and greeted:
"Governor Pauly, Lieutenant Colonel Bonaparte, here you are."
Poly nodded, frowned and asked:
"How's your Excellency Pete doing?"
Captain Morris smiled bitterly, looked up and pointed to the master bedroom with the door closed on the second floor, sighed, and said in a low voice:
"It's a little better now, just when the disease was at its worst, I could hear his old man moaning when I stood outside."
Poly nodded solemnly, motioned for Lawrence to follow, and then walked up to the second floor with a light step, knocking on Pete's door.
"Who is it? I said don't bother me. β
An old and frail voice suddenly came from inside, and it could be heard from the tone that Pete had been tortured by gout and was quite exhausted.
Poly held the doorknob, but did not open the door rashly, but stood outside and said in a deep voice:
"Your Excellency Pete, it's me, I brought you a doctor."
"Doctor?!"
Pete's voice immediately became sharp and angry, and he shouted at the top of his voice:
"You brought Mariana bastard? Let him fuck off! Let him roll out with his bloodletting therapy! β
Lawrence, who was outside the door, glanced at Paulie a little embarrassed, shrugged and explained:
"Maria is supposed to be his personal doctor, but it doesn't seem to please His Excellency Pete."
Seeing this, Paulie had to say "excuse me" first, and then directly pushed the door open and walked in with Lawrence.
The furnishings in the bedroom were simple, with little furniture, only a bed, a set of tables and chairs, and a wardrobe, while the old man on the bed was leaning weakly against the head of the bed, squinting at the visitor.
Pete's eyes were quite sharp, and he didn't seem to be affected by the pain at all, and just sweeping Lawrence's body made Lawrence feel that his body temperature had dropped by a few degrees.
Lawrence also looked at Pitt with some curiosity, this was the first historical figure Lawrence had seen in person, except for the young Napoleon and Nelson.
"As recorded in later generations, he was not tall and thin, but he had an arbitrary and domineering temperament all over his body, and he revealed a unique sense of pride in his words and deeds."
Lawrence put away his gaze and silently overlapped the image of the little old man in front of him with the image of history in his heart.
Pete wiped the cold sweat from his forehead with his hand, looked at Lawrence with a frown for a while, and then said coldly:
"Paulie, who is this?"
Instead of answering, Paulie gave Lawrence a look.
Lawrence also took a step forward in understanding, bowed to Pete, performed impeccable courtesy, and then introduced himself:
"It is an honor to meet you, honorable Earl Tatum, Your Excellency Pete, I am Lawrence Bonaparte, knight of Florence, loyal subordinate of Governor Pauli."
Paulie on the side couldn't help but glance at Lawrence secretly, and in the last half of the sentence, Paulie didn't even believe a punctuation mark.
However, thinking that it was still up to Lawrence to treat Pete, Paulie had to smile and nod in approval.
Pete glanced at Lawrence again, then turned his head and closed his eyes and leaned back on the bed, and said without interest:
"Pauly's subordinates, what's the matter?"
Lawrence knew very well that anyone would become impatient and irritable under great pain, so he didn't say anything polite, and went straight to the point:
"Your Excellency, I have a way to alleviate your condition."
As soon as he heard this, Pete suddenly opened his eyes, turned his head sideways, looked Lawrence up and down carefully, and said with a sneer:
"What? You're going to bleed me too? β
Lawrence scratched his head a little embarrassed, thinking that it was no wonder that Maria, as a personal doctor, was not taken by Pete's side, and the daily bloodletting gave Pete a psychological shadow.
However, it is not to blame Pete for being so resistant to bloodletting, as such outrageous treatments were too prevalent in eighteenth-century Europe.
Even Washington, the founding father of the United States, was bloodletted four times in succession by three doctors after he fell seriously ill, and finally died uncomfortably that night.
It can be seen that even high-ranking officials and nobles may not be able to receive regular medical treatment.
"No, no, no, you won't use a knife at all."
Lawrence said with a shake of his head.
Although severe gout did require surgery in later generations, in the eighteenth century there were no sanitary conditions and tools, let alone Lawrence, who did not know how to perform surgery.
"Oh? Don't use the knife? β
Pete became a little interested, sat up with his arms propped up, and asked:
"Tell me, that... Lawrence: yes? What can you do? β
Since Lawrence was brought by Paulie, Pete also had a little trust in him, and after hearing that he didn't have to endure the pain of bloodletting, Pete expected a little more from Lawrence.
"Pardon my rudeness, Lord Pete, please let me see your feet." Lawrence said rudely.
Pete didn't talk nonsense, and directly lifted the quilt on his body and beckoned Lawrence to come over.
Lawrence walked over to the bed and crouched down and looked at Pete's right foot.
I saw that the thumb of his right foot was already a little deformed, and there was a conspicuous protrusion in the middle of the joint, the size of a pigeon's egg, which was called tophi.
Lawrence observed for a moment, stood up, and said with a solemn face:
"I beg your pardon for my remarks, Your Excellency, but your condition is more serious than you think."
Pete waved his hand indifferently and said:
"Of course I know whether my illness is serious or not, I just ask you if there is a way."
"Yes." Lawrence said with a determined expression.
"yes, yes, that's..."
Pete heard Lawrence's answer, nodded with a little satisfaction, and was about to continue, however.
I saw that Pete's face suddenly distorted, beads of sweat the size of beans appeared on his forehead in an instant, and the words on his lips stopped abruptly.
Pete, who had just sat up, fell directly on the bed without any struggle, clenched his teeth, and said in a lost voice:
"Damn it! Not again! β
Lawrence was also startled at first, but quickly calmed down and learned that Pete had another attack of acute gout.
The name gout comes from its pathogenic characteristics: it comes and goes quickly.
Lawrence turned around and patted Paulie, who was still stunned, and said quickly:
"Governor, I'm going to mix potions for His Excellency Pete now, and you go to the cellar to get ice for Pitt!"
Paulie glanced at Pete, who was curled up on the bed, and nodded subconsciously, and didn't have time to pursue Lawrence's orders to him.
